An unexplained, continuing, or rapid change in your dog’s weight is a reason to contact your veterinarian—don’t wait for a particular percentage of weight loss. Call promptly if the change comes with altered appetite, drinking or urination, vomiting or diarrhea, weakness, low energy, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or breathing changes. Trouble breathing, collapse, severe weakness, or a swollen abdomen with repeated unproductive retching calls for emergency veterinary care.
When should you call the vet about a weight change?
Contact your veterinary clinic if your dog is losing weight without an obvious explanation, if the trend continues, or if the change is rapid. PDSA advises contacting a vet if you think your dog is losing weight; PetMD likewise recommends assessment for unexplained loss. A normal appetite does not rule out a medical problem.
Call promptly if a weight trend is accompanied by other changes, including:
- Eating more or less than usual, or difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or a change in stool
- Drinking or urinating more or less than usual
- Low energy, weakness, or loss of muscle
- Coughing or changes in breathing
There is no single safe waiting period for every dog. Call your clinic, describe the trend and accompanying signs, and ask how soon your dog should be examined.

Seek emergency care for acute warning signs
Go to an emergency veterinary service or call one immediately for difficulty breathing, collapse, severe weakness, or a markedly distended abdomen with repeated unproductive retching. Persistent vomiting or diarrhea together with weakness or reduced responsiveness also needs urgent attention. These signs matter more than the number on the scale.
Why the speed and pattern matter
Faster unintended weight loss is more concerning than a small fluctuation, and a change that keeps going deserves attention. Recent changes in food, activity, household routine, or stress may help explain a trend, but they do not establish its cause.

For weight loss, VCA Animal Hospitals describes a loss of more than 10% of a dog’s normal body weight, when not caused by fluid loss or dehydration, as clinically significant. For example, its threshold would be more than 7 pounds for a 70-pound dog. This is a description of clinical significance, not a threshold to wait for: contact your vet about suspected or continuing loss, especially if other signs are present. VCA also notes that faster loss is more concerning. VCA: Abnormal Weight Loss in Dogs
Weight gain can also warrant veterinary advice. Feeding patterns and activity are common contributors, but illness, genetics, and some medications may play a part. A sudden increase in abdominal size is not the same as ordinary gradual weight gain and can signal an emergency, particularly with unproductive retching.

Why might a dog lose weight?
Weight loss can result from too few calories or a diet that does not meet a dog’s needs, but it can also happen when a dog has increased energy needs or cannot eat, digest, or absorb food normally. Possible contributors include:
- Reduced appetite or difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Regurgitation, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Poor digestion or absorption of nutrients
- Parasites or illness affecting organs or metabolism
A dog may lose weight while eating normally or even more than usual, so appetite by itself cannot rule out illness. The weight trend and the rest of the dog’s symptoms help the vet decide what to investigate. VCA: Abnormal Weight Loss in Dogs

Why might a dog gain weight?
In otherwise healthy dogs, common contributors include high-fat or low-fiber feeding patterns, free-choice feeding, too many treats or table scraps, and a sedentary lifestyle. Medical contributors can include hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, genetics, and some medications. Merck Veterinary Manual lists weight gain and lethargy among possible signs of canine hypothyroidism; those signs alone do not diagnose it. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine: Obesity and weight loss in dogs Merck Veterinary Manual: Hypothyroidism in animals
Do not start a weight-loss program, cut calories, or switch to a weight-control diet without veterinary guidance. A veterinary team can assess your dog, consider nutritional needs and medical obstacles, and set an appropriate plan if weight reduction is needed. VCA: Creating a Weight Reduction Plan for Dogs

What information should you bring to the appointment?
A concise record can help your veterinarian interpret the change. Note:
- Your dog’s weights and the dates they were measured, including whether the change was gradual or rapid
- Food type and the amount offered and eaten; include treats and table scraps
- Appetite, activity, and changes in routine or household
- Drinking and urination
- Stool changes, vomiting, or regurgitation
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing, coughing, breathing changes, or other symptoms
- Medications and supplements
Weigh your dog consistently if you can do so safely, and bring the record rather than relying on memory. PDSA recommends regular weighing and recording weight and food. PDSA: Weight loss in dogs
What might the veterinarian check?
The vet will start by asking about your dog’s history and performing a physical examination. Depending on what they find, they may recommend blood and urine tests, parasite testing, X-rays, or abdominal ultrasound. Not every dog needs every test; the next steps depend on the pattern of weight change and the examination. VCA: Testing for Weight Loss in Dogs
