How to Tell If Your Pet Needs an Emergency Vet or Can Wait Until Morning

Breathing trouble, collapse, seizures, suspected poisoning, inability to urinate, and other severe signs call for immediate veterinary contact. For uncertain symptoms, call a veterinarian rather than assume your pet can wait until morning.

If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, is having a seizure, may have been poisoned, cannot urinate, or has another severe warning sign, contact an emergency veterinarian now. For less obvious symptoms, call a veterinarian or local emergency clinic for case-specific advice. No symptom list can confirm that an individual pet is safe to leave until morning.

Does my pet need an emergency vet?

Go to an emergency clinic or call one immediately for signs that may be life-threatening. VCA lists these as critical emergencies, and Cornell’s emergency guidance for dogs describes many of the same red flags.

  • Trouble breathing, blue or pale gums, or a cat breathing with its mouth open.
  • Collapse, inability to stand or walk, sudden profound weakness, paralysis, or unresponsiveness.
  • An ongoing seizure, repeated seizures, or failure to return to normal after one.
  • Major bleeding, severe injury, or a vehicle impact or fall.
  • Known or suspected exposure to a toxin, or swallowing an object that could cause a blockage.
  • A rapidly swollen or hard abdomen with repeated retching that produces nothing.
  • Repeated straining with no urine, or inability to urinate.
  • Heatstroke signs, a severe allergic reaction, or labor that is not progressing.

When a red flag is present, do not wait to see whether it passes. Call the clinic serving your area; its intake process, hours, and availability may vary.

How do I judge symptoms that are less clear?

Call a veterinary professional now if you are unsure. Explain what changed, when it began, whether it is worsening or recurring, and whether your pet has weakness, pain, blood, breathing changes, or unusual responsiveness. These details help a professional assess urgency; they do not create a reliable home rule for waiting overnight.

An occasional episode of vomiting or soft stool can happen, but repeated vomiting or diarrhea—especially with blood, lethargy, weakness, or refusal to eat—can signal a more serious problem. Cornell advises veterinary assessment when symptoms raise concern. Do not use one apparently mild symptom to conclude that waiting is safe.

Which warning signs need particular attention?

Breathing changes

Rapid, noisy, shallow, or labored breathing; pronounced abdominal effort; neck stretching; or blue-tinged gums or tongue require immediate veterinary attention. Open-mouth breathing in a cat is also urgent. Breathing distress can have many causes and cannot be assessed safely at home. Daniel Fletcher, DVM, assistant professor of emergency and critical care at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, advises: “Any time there’s a question about an animal’s ability to breathe comfortably, get it to a veterinarian right away.” Cornell’s feline breathing guidance explains why prompt assessment matters.

Collapse, weakness, or seizures

Sudden collapse, inability to stand, paralysis, unresponsiveness, or rapidly declining responsiveness needs emergency care. During a seizure, move nearby hazards away, do not restrain your pet, and keep your hands away from its mouth. Time the episode and contact a veterinarian. Cornell says a first seizure should prompt a veterinary examination; a seizure lasting more than five minutes or multiple seizures in a short time warrants emergency care. The AVMA’s emergency-care guidance also advises calling a veterinarian.

Possible poisoning or a swallowed object

Contact a veterinarian, emergency hospital, or animal poison-control service promptly after a possible toxic exposure. Some responses are time-sensitive. Have the product container or label ready and note your pet’s species, size, the substance, estimated amount, and exposure time. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you. Severe tremors or seizures, altered behavior, inability to stand, or a need for fluid treatment calls for emergency-hospital care.

Abdominal swelling, retching, vomiting, or diarrhea

A swollen or hard abdomen with repeated unproductive retching can signal a life-threatening emergency. Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, particularly with blood, lethargy, weakness, or refusal to eat, needs prompt veterinary advice and may require emergency evaluation.

Straining to urinate

A pet that repeatedly strains without producing urine needs immediate care. Complete urinary blockage in cats can be fatal without immediate treatment and is most common in male cats. Cornell’s feline urinary guidance describes the danger; do not wait for the problem to resolve on its own.

Injury, pain, heat, allergy, labor, or eye symptoms

Seek urgent veterinary advice for severe wounds or pain, major bleeding, a fall or vehicle impact, suspected heatstroke, a severe allergic reaction, or labor that is not progressing. Internal injuries may not be obvious after an accident. Eye symptoms—including squinting, redness, swelling, pawing, cloudiness, or discharge—also need prompt evaluation.

What should I do while arranging veterinary care?

  1. Call your regular veterinarian or the nearest emergency clinic. If you can do so safely, call while en route so staff can prepare and advise on transport. Keep seeking live veterinary guidance rather than relying on an online symptom list.
  2. For a possible poisoning, gather the details. Keep the package or label, record what your pet encountered and when, and follow professional instructions. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless directed.
  3. For a seizure, protect without restraining. Clear hazards, keep your hands away from the mouth, time the seizure, and contact a veterinarian after it stops.
  4. Move an injured pet carefully. Limit movement. A ventilated carrier, box, or other confined space may help for a smaller pet; a blanket, board, or similar support may help a larger dog. Pain and fear can provoke defensive behavior, so handle your pet cautiously.
  5. Use first aid only as a bridge to care. It does not replace veterinary assessment.

What should I keep ready before an emergency?

The AVMA recommends keeping veterinary and emergency contact details and medical records accessible, along with basic first-aid supplies such as clean towels, gauze, nonstick bandages, tape, blunt-ended scissors, a spare leash and collar, and a digital thermometer. Ask your veterinarian how to use supplies safely; for example, the AVMA warns not to muzzle a vomiting pet. A carrier can help confine a pet during transport, though a ventilated box or another suitable container may also work. Do not delay leaving for a clinic to find or buy supplies.
