At a healthy condition, the ribs are easy to feel under a light covering, the waist is visible from above, the abdomen tucks upward from the side, and the puppy has good muscle. Prominent bones may indicate that a puppy is too thin; ribs that are hard to feel and a missing waist may point to excess weight. These checks can help you spot a concern, but a veterinarian should assess a growing puppy’s weight and health.
How to check your Pitsky puppy’s body condition
- Look from above. With your puppy standing naturally, check for a visible waist behind the ribs.
- Look from the side. The abdomen should rise behind the rib cage rather than hang level or appear rounded.
- Feel the ribs gently. Run your hands over the rib cage without pressing hard. At an ideal condition, you can feel the ribs beneath a light covering.
- Check muscle as well as fat. Notice whether bones look prominent or the puppy seems to have lost muscle. A weight reading alone cannot show the whole picture.
A thick coat can hide the puppy’s outline, so touch may be more informative than appearance. These observations are screening aids, not a diagnosis or an explanation for why the puppy’s condition is changing.

Signs your puppy may be underweight
Ribs, the spine, or the pelvis that are plainly visible and easy to feel, with little fat covering, suggest a thin dog. A markedly thin or emaciated appearance deserves veterinary advice. Agriculture Victoria’s dog condition chart describes these observable differences and advises seeking veterinary help for emaciation or persistent low weight.
Signs your puppy may be overweight
When ribs are not visible but can still be felt, the waist is slight or absent, and the abdomen is rounded or no longer tucked, the puppy may be carrying excess condition. If the ribs are difficult to feel, that is another reason to discuss body condition with your veterinarian. Do not try to diagnose a puppy from a photo or outline alone.

Compare the signs, not a breed-weight number
| Body condition | What you may see or feel |
|---|---|
| Thin | Ribs, spine, or pelvis prominent and easy to feel; little fat covering. |
| Ideal | Ribs readily felt under a light covering; visible waist from above; abdominal tuck from the side; good muscle. |
| Overweight | Ribs harder to feel; waist reduced or absent; abdomen less tucked or rounded. |
The AAHA screening guidance gives 4–5 on a 9-point body-condition score (BCS) as the general ideal range for dogs. Treat that as a broad reference, not an individual diagnosis or a Pitsky puppy target. BCS assesses fat condition; muscle-condition scoring (MCS) is separate, and a dog can have excess fat while also losing muscle. AAHA recommends considering body weight, BCS, MCS, and the broader nutritional and physical assessment together.
Why there is no reliable Pitsky puppy weight target
Pitsky puppies are mixed-breed dogs, and their eventual size and growth can vary. The 2017 study “Growth standard charts for monitoring bodyweight in dogs of different sizes” developed its puppy growth charts from purebred dogs and excluded mixed-breed dogs. Those charts therefore do not establish an expected weight curve for a Pitsky. A generic breed-weight figure or chart cannot tell you whether your individual puppy is healthy.

For an individual puppy, a veterinarian can interpret weight changes alongside age, sex, size, family history, body condition, and clinical findings. AAHA’s nutritional assessment guidance also emphasizes puppy breed and size context and recording weight, BCS, and MCS.
Track changes and know when to call the vet
Record dated weights and your observations of body shape and muscle condition. A scale can help show a trend, but it cannot assign a BCS or diagnose the reason for a change. Bring the record to a veterinary appointment along with feeding details, treats, and any changes in appetite or stool; ask the veterinarian to demonstrate BCS and muscle-condition scoring on your puppy.

- Arrange veterinary advice for persistent thinness, a growth concern, or a noticeable change in body condition.
- Seek advice as well if the puppy seems unwell or has other health signs.
- Do not restrict food, add supplements, or set a weight-gain or weight-loss plan based only on appearance or one measurement.
