How to Tell Whether Your Dog Is Slowing Down From Age or a Health Problem

A slower pace may come with age, but pain and illness can look similar. Track the changes and ask your veterinarian to assess new or worsening decline.

A dog may become less active with age, but a new or worsening decline should not automatically be written off as “just getting older.” Pain, osteoarthritis and chronic illness can also make a dog slow down, and there is no reliable home test to tell these causes apart. Track what has changed and discuss it with your veterinarian, particularly if the decline is progressing or other changes appear.

Why age alone cannot explain a new change

Aging is not a diagnosis. Reduced activity can accompany normal aging, but it also overlaps with pain and chronic disease. A dog’s age or one symptom cannot establish the cause; a veterinarian interprets the history and examination and decides whether testing is appropriate. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) identifies history, physical examination and appropriate diagnostic evaluation as part of assessing suspected chronic disease. AAHA senior-care guidance

What the pattern of change can tell you

There is no symptom-only rule that reliably distinguishes ordinary aging from illness. These observations help organize what to tell the veterinary team; they are not a diagnostic scoring system.

Gradual or sudden onset

Note when you first noticed the change and whether it appeared gradually or suddenly. Contact your veterinarian promptly about a sudden or severe change rather than waiting to see whether age explains it. The available guidance does not establish a universal emergency-sign checklist, so seek veterinary direction for the situation in front of you.

Stable or progressive decline

Record whether your dog’s activity has stayed about the same or is continuing to decrease. Progressive lethargy is among the clinical signs AAHA says can occur with chronic disease in senior pets. It is not specific to one condition, but persistent or worsening changes merit a conversation with your veterinarian. AAHA senior care

Mobility changes or changes in other areas

Notice whether the difference is mainly movement-related or also involves energy, appetite, thirst, weight, sleep, behavior or elimination. AAHA lists malaise, progressive lethargy, behavior change, reduced appetite, altered thirst, weight loss over time, mobility changes and wounds that do not heal among possible signs of chronic disease in senior pets. These signs are clues to discuss, not diagnoses.

Mobility clues that can be easy to miss

Osteoarthritis can affect dogs at any age, although it commonly affects dogs; age alone does not establish that it is the cause. Cornell lists the following possible signs:

  • Stiffness, pain, lameness or a changed gait.
  • Less activity or reluctance to walk, run or exercise.
  • Trouble with stairs or jumping onto furniture.
  • Difficulty rising or visible muscle loss.
  • A sudden behavior change, such as irritability or aggression.

These signs can help you describe what you see, but they do not confirm osteoarthritis. Cornell recommends veterinary evaluation for suspected mobility problems. Cornell University: Osteoarthritis in dogs

Behavior, sleep or house-training changes need assessment too

Changes in awareness, social interaction, sleep-wake patterns, house-training, activity or anxiety may be consistent with cognitive dysfunction, but medical problems can produce overlapping signs. Cornell’s DISHAA guide is a way to track possible cognitive changes with veterinary input: disorientation; interaction changes; sleep changes; house-training or learned-behavior changes; activity changes; and anxiety. It is not a home diagnosis. Cornell also advises veterinary evaluation to rule out a bladder infection when an older dog begins soiling indoors. Cornell University: Cognitive dysfunction in dogs

How to prepare for a veterinary appointment

  1. Keep a short, dated log. Note activity, walks, rising, stairs, gait, appetite, water intake, weight if known, sleep, elimination and behavior. This helps provide the history your veterinarian needs; it is not a test.
  2. Take a video if it is safe. A brief clip of your dog walking or attempting a usual movement may help the veterinary team assess mobility. Do not make your dog perform a movement that seems painful or unsafe.
  3. Bring a complete product list. Include prescriptions, supplements, nutraceuticals, creams, oils and other therapies. AAHA warns that drug and supplement interactions can cause serious toxicity or other harm. Do not give human pain medicines or start a supplement without veterinary advice.
  4. Ask what evaluation fits your dog. The veterinarian can use the history and physical examination to decide whether clinicopathological tests or other diagnostics are appropriate. There is no single test schedule that fits every dog.

AAHA says senior dogs should receive a physical exam at least twice a year, including routine bloodwork, with additional screening tests if needed. Its senior-care guidance also describes workups once or twice a year that may include a complete blood count, chemistry and urinalysis. These are general recommendations; your veterinarian should tailor the timing and tests to your dog’s health and history. AAHA senior-care guidelines

Home changes can support mobility, but cannot identify the cause

If your veterinarian identifies mobility difficulty, ask which adaptations suit your dog. Cornell lists non-slip rugs, ramps, weight control and low-impact activity among possible osteoarthritis-management measures. A ramp or better footing may make movement easier, but home changes do not diagnose or treat the underlying cause and should not replace veterinary advice. Cornell University: Osteoarthritis in dogs
