How to Tell Whether Your Dog’s Poor Coat Needs a Vet Visit

Seasonal shedding may be normal, but bald patches, persistent coat changes, skin irritation, odor, sores, or discharge can warrant a veterinary exam.

A little seasonal shedding can be normal. New bald patches, persistent hair loss, or a poor coat with itching, inflamed or flaky skin, odor, greasiness, sores, or discharge should prompt a call to your veterinarian. Blood or pus on the skin warrants prompt veterinary attention. Coat appearance is a clue, not a diagnosis: several different problems can look alike.

Which coat changes are concerning?

Compare what you see with your dog’s usual coat, taking breed, coat type, season, and general health into account. Shedding without bald patches or inflamed skin may be ordinary hair replacement. A new bare area or patchy loss is different from loose hair spread through the coat and deserves veterinary evaluation.

  • Arrange a veterinary examination: new bald patches; ongoing or recurring coat changes; significant itching; redness, scaling, scabs, odor, greasiness, or discharge.
  • Contact a veterinarian promptly: blood or pus, painful or open sores, hair loss that is expanding quickly, or a dog who seems unwell as well as having a coat change. If signs are worsening, call the clinic sooner for advice on timing.
  • Keep an eye on ordinary shedding: if there are no bald spots or signs of skin inflammation, mention persistent concerns at routine care. If you are unsure whether the pattern is normal for your dog, ask your veterinarian.

These signs help you describe the problem; none identifies its cause by itself. PDSA advises seeing a vet as soon as possible when there is blood or pus from the skin (PDSA skin-problem guidance). Merck and USDA describe hair loss and abnormal skin changes that merit veterinary assessment (Merck Veterinary Manual; USDA canine skin guidance).

Why can a dog’s coat become dull or sparse?

Many conditions affect coat quality, and the same outward change can have different causes. Examples include grooming or skin-care problems, allergies, parasites, infection, inflammation, trauma, inadequate nutrition, chronic illness, stress, digestive problems, and hormonal or metabolic conditions. The pattern of hair loss and the condition of the skin help a veterinarian decide what to investigate; they are not reliable home tests.

For example, hair loss on both sides of the body can occur with endocrine problems, but that pattern does not establish a diagnosis. Itching may be less common with some endocrine patterns unless a secondary infection is present. A veterinarian needs to interpret such clues in context (Merck Veterinary Manual: dermatological problems in animals).

Nutrition is one possibility, not an automatic fix

Diet can affect skin and hair. An unbalanced homemade diet, inappropriate supplementation, or other diet concerns may be relevant, but a poor coat alone is not a reason to switch foods or add supplements. VCA notes that nutritional needs depend on a dog’s life stage and health, and that other causes of coat changes also need consideration. Discuss diet and skin-care changes with your veterinarian (VCA: Nutrition, Skin, and Dogs).

What will the veterinarian check?

The veterinarian may ask when the change started, how it has progressed, whether it itches, where hair is missing, and whether you have noticed other changes in your dog’s health. They may examine the skin and coat for parasites or secondary infection and examine hair or skin samples. Depending on the findings, testing may include skin scrapings, combing, skin smears or culture, or blood and urine tests. More testing or referral may be appropriate in some cases; the work-up depends on the dog’s signs and history.

As Merck’s pet-owner guidance explains, “Hair loss is a sign and its underlying cause must be determined for the condition to be successfully treated.” The page, last updated in May 2025, was reviewed by Karen A. Moriello, DVM, DACVD (Merck Veterinary Manual: hair loss in dogs).

How to prepare for the appointment

Before you call or visit, note when you first saw the change and whether it is spreading, improving, or returning. Photos taken over time can help show how the pattern changes. Also write down:

  • Which areas are affected and whether the skin looks red, flaky, greasy, scabbed, or sore.
  • Whether your dog is scratching, licking, rubbing, or showing pain.
  • Recent bathing, grooming, diet changes, supplements, and parasite prevention.
  • Any other changes, such as appetite, energy, weight, or digestion.

Share these details with the clinic so the veterinarian can assess how soon your dog should be seen. The right treatment depends on the cause, so avoid treating an unexplained coat change as though it were only a grooming or nutrition issue.
