Training a “difficult” dog starts with safety, not confrontation: reduce situations that trigger the unwanted behavior, then teach and reward useful alternatives in small, manageable steps. Reward-based training is the recommended foundation. If the behavior is sudden, severe, persistent, or could injure someone, contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than relying on a home plan alone.

What “difficult” behavior means—and what to do first

“Difficult” is a broad description, not a diagnosis. Replace labels such as “bad” or “dominant” with a specific account of what the dog does, where it happens, and what is present just beforehand. A dog that barks at visitors, freezes near other dogs, or guards food needs a plan matched to that situation; one exercise will not suit every case.

Until you understand the pattern and risk, manage the environment to prevent avoidable close encounters. Depending on the dog and setting, that may mean keeping more distance, using secure barriers, or changing a routine. Management protects people and animals and can help keep the dog calm enough to learn.

Keep a brief record of the antecedent, behavior, and consequence: what happened immediately before, what the dog did, and what followed. Note the location and distance from a trigger where relevant. This record can reveal patterns for you and help a veterinarian or qualified professional assess the problem.

  • Sit, stay, treat! Our chewy, low-calorie training bites make for the best rewards (... or, simply, extra treating!) - from teaching tricks to incentivizing good behavior to hiding inside puzzle toys, too!

  • Proudly Baked in the USA: We start each recipe with the highest quality (tastiest!) ingredients, sourced in the USA local to our bakeries.
  • Our Promise: Wheat, corn, and soy-free recipes - and never, ever any artificial ingredients or preservatives. We keep our ingredient lists short, our batches small, and our ovens toasty.
  • Our Story: Bocce’s was started in a tiny NYC kitchen with a mixer, an oven and a scruffy mutt named Bocce, with the belief that our furry friends (pups and kitty cats, too!) deserve better. Better food with fresher, simpler, natural ingredients.

If the behavior changes suddenly, distress is severe, or someone may be injured, contact a veterinarian promptly. A veterinarian can assess health factors and coordinate further care. Medication may be part of a treatment plan in some cases, based on veterinary assessment.

Build a plan around gradual behavior change

Set the dog up below the reaction point

For fear or reactivity, arrange the situation so the dog can notice the trigger without becoming overwhelmed. Distance, a quieter setting, or a less intense version of the trigger may make the difference between a dog that can learn and one already in a strong reaction. There is no universal distance: watch the individual dog and make the setup easier if the dog struggles to stay engaged.

Gradual exposure, often paired with something the dog values, is different from flooding. Flooding exposes a dog to a trigger at a level that provokes the fear or aggressive response. The American Animal Hospital Association warns against flooding because it can worsen distress; do not force a dog to remain in a frightening situation in the hope that it will “get used to it.” The AAHA Behavior Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats describe the importance of keeping exposure below the response threshold.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) describes desensitization and counterconditioning as common approaches for fearful dogs. Pair the trigger, at a manageable intensity, with a valued reward and progress at the dog’s pace. If the dog reacts strongly, increase distance or otherwise make the setup easier; do not press on with exposure.

Teach an alternative the dog can succeed at

Choose a small, observable behavior that helps in the relevant situation. Depending on the dog and context, a useful target might be looking back to the guardian, moving away, settling on a mat, or going behind a barrier. These are examples, not a prescription for every dog.

Mark the moment the desired behavior happens with a brief verbal marker or an optional clicker, then give an appropriate reward. AVSAB identifies capturing, shaping, and luring as possible reward-based teaching methods, and treats, toys, cues, and verbal markers or clickers as possible tools. A clicker is not required. Keep sessions short enough for the dog to remain comfortable, and let the dog opt out.

Review the setup and adjust

Track the context and the dog’s response, not just whether a behavior occurred. If the dog has difficulty, reduce the challenge, change the environment, strengthen management, or ask a qualified professional to review the plan. A setback is a reason to reconsider the setup, not to punish the dog or force more exposure. Management and training can work together: management protects progress, while training can help in situations that cannot be avoided completely.

Why use reward-based training?

AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for ordinary training and behavior concerns. Its 2021 Position Statement on Humane Dog Training says, “Evidence supports the use of reward based methods for all canine training.” AVSAB’s 2025 board clarification says the 2021 statement remains its most current and authoritative expression of the organization’s view.

Structure and boundaries do not require fear, intimidation, or pain. AVSAB advises against methods that rely on pain, physical corrections, intimidation, flooding, or dominance-based explanations. A dog should be able to opt out of training rather than being compelled to endure a frightening setup.

When and how to choose professional help

Seek qualified help when the behavior is serious, persistent, difficult to manage safely, or beyond what you can address at home. For severe emotional distress or risk of injury, ASPCA advises referral to a specialist. AVSAB recommends consulting or referring to a veterinarian, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, or a certified applied animal behaviorist when a trainer is having difficulty with a case.

Before hiring a trainer, ask direct questions about the methods and equipment they use, how they handle fear, aggression, and setbacks, what education or independent certification they hold, and whether they coordinate with veterinarians. AVSAB advises against trainers who use pain, intimidation, physical corrections, flooding, or dominance-based explanations. ASPCA notes that dog training is not regulated in the United States, so check current qualifications, service area, and fit for your specific concern rather than assuming a title alone guarantees suitability.

Safety tools are management, not a cure

Barriers or other equipment may help prevent a particular risky encounter, but the right choice depends on the dog and setting. No tool replaces a behavior plan. If a muzzle is appropriate, introduce and condition it gradually and non-punitively before it is needed; do not put it on a fearful dog as a way to force exposure or treat the underlying behavior.

Avoid advice that promises a quick fix or says one technique works for every “difficult” dog. The workable plan is the one that protects everyone, keeps the dog able to participate, and can be adjusted to the dog’s response.
