Tollers are intelligent, energetic working retrievers; many do well with positive reinforcement, but a dog’s age, temperament and experience shape what works. Build skills gradually, make returning to you worthwhile, and combine training with appropriate activity and enrichment.
Why a Toller’s background matters
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers were developed as working gundogs. Their tolling and retrieving work involved drawing waterfowl closer with playful movement near shore, then retrieving birds. That history can make retrieving games, scent activities and suitable dog sports rewarding outlets for a pet, but hunting training is not a requirement.
The Canadian breed club describes Tollers as intelligent, alert and high-energy, and notes that some may be reserved in unfamiliar situations or inclined to chase smaller animals. The AKC also notes possible wariness around strangers or other animals. These are tendencies, not guarantees: watch your own dog and tailor the pace and setting accordingly.
AKC breed guidance says, “Most Tollers respond well to positive reinforcement-based training methods.” It also describes the breed as a challenging combination of persistent and sensitive. In practice, make the desired behavior clear, reward it promptly and avoid turning a lesson into a contest. If your dog disengages or seems overwhelmed, make the task easier or take a break.

Set up a routine that helps your dog succeed
Management prevents a puppy from rehearsing unwanted behavior while learning the household routine. Use gates to block unsafe areas, and consider a crate for rest or an exercise pen for contained play if they suit your dog. Supervise, provide age-appropriate chew toys and keep tempting hazards out of reach.
Agree on consistent cue words and household rules. Rather than assume a puppy understands a correction word, show the behavior you want and reinforce it. Pay attention to body language: it can help you recognize when your dog is ready to engage, needs a pause or would benefit from more distance.

Teach useful foundations first
Simple training can begin when a puppy comes home. AKC says puppies can start very basic training at around eight weeks; keep expectations appropriate to the puppy’s development and adjustment to a new home. Start with skills that make everyday life easier:
- Name response and attention: Say the puppy’s name once, then reward looking toward you.
- Settling: Reward calm moments on a bed or in another safe resting spot.
- Handling comfort: Pair brief, gentle handling with rewards, and stop before the puppy becomes uncomfortable.
- Basic cues: Introduce simple cues such as “sit,” “down” and “come” in a quiet setting.
Deliver a small reward as soon as the behavior happens so the connection is clear. Treats are useful for new skills, but toys, praise and everyday rewards can also reinforce behavior. Keep treats small and account for them as part of your dog’s overall food intake.

Choose rewards your Toller actually values
There is no single best reward for every dog or situation. Choose based on your dog’s motivation, how quickly you can deliver the reward, how distracting the setting is and whether the dog stays engaged.

Build a recall that is worth answering
Start in a quiet, controlled place where your dog is likely to succeed. Use a cheerful invitation, reward arrival generously, and gradually practise with greater distractions. Do not call your dog only to end something enjoyable, and never punish the dog for coming back—even if the return took longer than you hoped.

AKC recommends greeting a dog warmly when it arrives, regardless of what happened beforehand. Until recall has been practised successfully in progressively more distracting, controlled settings, do not treat it as reliable enough for off-leash freedom.

Help your puppy encounter new sights, sounds, people and places in a calm, positive way. Let the dog observe from a distance at which it can stay comfortable, and allow it to approach at its own pace. Early socialization and puppy courses are recommended in breed-specific guidance, but there is no single exposure schedule established for every Toller.

Because some Tollers may have prey drive around smaller animals, supervise interactions with cats and other small pets. Do not assume that familiarity alone makes an unsupervised interaction safe.
Balance physical activity with mental work
Tollers need physical activity and mental stimulation, but the right amount varies with the individual dog and its age. For young puppies, AKC notes that enrichment can help meet needs while being safer for developing bodies and joints. Try short training games, food puzzles, scent games or simple problem-solving activities.
For a mature dog, walks, retrieving games and suitable sports can offer purposeful outlets. Adjust activities to your dog rather than following a universal exercise-minute formula; the sources cited here do not establish one.
Choose training support to fit the problem
A puppy class can give a beginner structured practice and opportunities for early social exposure, provided the puppy is comfortable in that environment. One-to-one help may be a better fit when the challenge is specific or a group setting is too difficult for the dog. The available guidance does not establish that either format is more effective or less expensive.
Ask whether a trainer uses positive reinforcement and adapts the plan to the dog. Check qualifications and local availability before enrolling. AKC suggests seeking professional support for issues such as housetraining, leash walking, recall, excessive barking or fearfulness. For persistent fear, aggression or a significant behavior change, consult an appropriately qualified professional.
