For a safe trip, put your kitten in a secure, well-ventilated carrier that will fit the cat as an adult, make it familiar at home before travel, and keep it level and firmly secured in the vehicle. In a car, the FelineVMA’s 2025 guidance recommends placing the carrier on the floor behind the driver or passenger; use a seat belt only if that specific carrier is crash-test certified.
Choose a carrier that stays secure as your kitten grows
Kittens grow quickly, so choose a carrier sized for the adult cat: it should allow the cat to stand and turn around. If the carrier feels too spacious for a small kitten, rolled bedding can help reduce the open area temporarily without replacing the need for an adult-appropriate carrier. International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten booklet covers growth and travel preparation.
For routine car journeys and vet visits, prioritize a secure closure, good ventilation, stable construction and surfaces that are easy to clean. FelineVMA describes a hard-plastic carrier with a removable top as the clearest default. The removable top can also make it easier for a veterinarian to examine a kitten who is frightened of being lifted out.
- If you choose a soft carrier: FelineVMA advises a large top opening and one or preferably two end doors. The opening should stay open rather than collapse.
- Avoid backpack-style carriers: FelineVMA cautions that they can limit movement and be unstable.
- Use one carrier per cat: Each cat should travel separately, even if the cats know each other.
If you intend to restrain the carrier with a seat belt, check whether the exact model has crash-test certification. A belt can crush a carrier that is not certified; a handle or strap alone does not establish crash safety. FelineVMA’s 2025 motor-vehicle position statement recommends seat belts only for crash-test-certified carriers.

Help your kitten get comfortable with the carrier before the trip
Leave the carrier open in a place your kitten likes, rather than bringing it out only when a stressful appointment is due. Add familiar soft bedding, then encourage voluntary exploration with a toy or a small treat if appropriate. Let the kitten set the pace.
- Leave the carrier open with familiar bedding so the kitten can investigate and rest inside.
- Once the kitten enters willingly, add the top if it is removable and offer another reward.
- Close the door for a brief period, then open it before the kitten becomes upset. Build up the duration gradually.
- Practice lifting the closed carrier gently. Keep it level and support it from underneath.
- When preparing for a longer drive, begin with short car trips and increase the length gradually.
FelineVMA’s 2024 guide to getting a cat to the veterinary practice and International Cat Care’s kitten booklet recommend making the carrier familiar and using gradual practice.

Prepare the carrier and car for a calm journey
Put familiar bedding inside. A towel or blanket draped over much of the carrier may give the kitten a hiding opportunity and reduce visual stimulation, but leave ventilation openings clear. Keep the car quiet and at a comfortable temperature.
Pheromone products are an optional aid, not a guarantee of calm. International Cat Care says Feliway Classic spray may be applied at least 20 minutes before travel so the alcohol can evaporate. FelineVMA’s client guide gives a range of 15 minutes to four hours for pheromone products applied to blankets and says the cat should not be nearby during spraying. Follow the product directions and maintain good airflow.

Secure the carrier in the car and handle it carefully
Before setting off, make sure the carrier is closed, level and unable to slide. FelineVMA’s current advice is to place it on the vehicle floor behind the driver or passenger. Use a seat belt only if the specific carrier is crash-test certified; otherwise, follow the floor-placement recommendation. The guidance is specific to motor vehicles and does not mean every carrier strap or seat-belt arrangement is safe.
When carrying the kitten, support the carrier from underneath with both hands or otherwise hold its base. Keep it level and close to your body instead of swinging it by the handle. Speak calmly, avoid loud sounds and maintain comfortable temperature and ventilation during the drive.

Keep the kitten contained during stops
Do not open the carrier while the vehicle is moving or during a stop along the way: a startled kitten could escape. If the kitten cries, keep it secured until you reach a safe, enclosed place. Never leave the kitten alone in a parked car; temperatures can become dangerous in hot or cold weather. ASPCA’s travel safety tips and its December 30, 2025 travel guidance address containment and vehicle safety.
For a longer trip, protect the carrier’s surface from possible soiling with waterproof material, and bring spare bedding and basic cleanup supplies. International Cat Care recommends waterproof protection for the carrier.

When to ask a veterinarian about distress or travel sickness
Some kittens may need individual help with travel. Vomiting or drooling can be signs of motion sickness; contact your veterinarian if these occur. Also ask for advice if your kitten remains very distressed despite gradual acclimation. A veterinarian can discuss whether treatment or medication is appropriate. Do not give human medication or choose a sedative on your own.
Air travel needs separate planning
Car guidance does not determine whether a kitten can fly or what carrier is allowed. Before booking, check the airline’s current carrier specifications, the route and destination’s entry requirements, and your veterinarian’s advice about the kitten’s health and readiness. The AVMA travel brochure cautions against routine tranquilization for air travel because of possible heart or respiratory risks; a veterinarian can assess an individual case. ASPCA also advises veterinary and destination-specific planning.
