You do not necessarily need prior experience, but animal-handling duties may require role-specific training—and some event jobs involve no direct cat contact at all.
How to find an event and sign up
Start with the website of the shelter, humane society, or rescue group organizing the event. Check its volunteer, events, adoption, or community outreach pages, then contact the volunteer coordinator or event lead. For example, Cat Adoption Team lists an Event Ambassador role that can include off-site adoption events. Champaign County Humane Society says it provides event-specific training or a duty outline when event opportunities arise.
Ask whether you can sign up for a single event or must first join the organization’s regular volunteer program. When you get in touch, share whether you want a one-day shift, any relevant animal-handling experience, your age if the program has age limits, and the kind of tasks you are interested in.
- What shifts and volunteer roles are available?
- Do I need to complete an application, orientation, or training first?
- Does this role involve handling cats, and is handling training required?
- Where and when should I check in, and how will I receive shift details?
There is no single sign-up process or experience requirement across shelters. Confirm the current rules with the event host.

What volunteers may do at an adoption event
Event work can range from public outreach to animal care support. Your assignment depends on the host and the needs of the event; volunteering does not automatically mean you will hold or handle cats.
Visitor support and adoption help
You may greet visitors, answer general questions about the event or adoption process, direct guests to staff, or help introduce visitors to available cats. Shelter adoption roles can also support staff during the adoption process. Direct questions about an animal’s health, behavior, or suitability—and anything beyond your training—to the designated staff member or adoption counselor.

Setup and general event assistance
Some volunteers help set up or pack down, direct foot traffic, keep supplies organized, or talk with attendees about the shelter. These roles may suit people who want to help but are not assigned animal handling.
Cat-area assistance
Where trained and assigned, volunteers may help keep the cat area clean and stocked, check that enclosures are secure, or support staff with visitor introductions. A Best Friends Animal Society adoption-event action kit, published in 2014, describes examples such as setup, water and litter tasks, and keeping the area supplied. Those are examples, not current rules for every event; follow the host’s instructions.

Training, age limits, and commitments vary
Each organization sets its own requirements, and requirements can differ by role. Some event positions are open to general helpers with event-specific instructions; roles involving animal care or handling may require training, orientation, or prior volunteer experience.
For examples of how policies differ, Cat Adoption Team lists a general minimum age of 12 for its volunteer program and says volunteers aged 12–15 must have a parent or guardian with them on each shift. Whatcom Humane Society gives 16 as its general minimum, notes that some roles require volunteers to be 18, and describes information sessions and training. Its volunteer page outlines its own onboarding and role requirements. These examples are specific to those organizations; ask your local host about the exact role and its current policy.

How to prepare for your shift
Before the event, confirm the practical details with the coordinator rather than assuming what to bring or wear. Some volunteer positions involve standing for long periods, so ask whether the assignment has physical demands and what clothing or footwear the organizer recommends.
- Confirm the check-in location and arrival time.
- Find out which tasks you are assigned and whether you will have contact with cats.
- Complete any required orientation or handling training in advance.
- Ask what to wear and whether you need to bring anything; do not assume the event requires personal supplies.
Follow event safety instructions
The event lead and animal-care staff set the rules for handling cats, interacting with visitors, and keeping the event area safe. Follow their directions, including any sanitation or access procedures. The 2014 Best Friends action kit gives examples of securing enclosures, keeping cats in the assigned area, and crating them before they leave that area. Your host’s current protocol takes priority.

- Do not remove a cat from its assigned enclosure or event area without staff permission.
- Tell staff promptly if a cat gets loose or appears unwell; do not try to diagnose or treat the animal yourself.
- Refer questions or promises about health, behavior, and adoption policy to trained staff when you are unsure.
Choosing the right volunteer role
If you have a choice of assignments, compare the role’s animal contact, preparation, schedule, and day-to-day demands before signing up.
