Remove as much loose cat hair as possible before clothes enter the washer. Shake garments outdoors, then use a lint roller or brush; if the care label and dryer permit, briefly tumble dry on a no-heat setting so loosened hair can collect on the lint screen. Wash and dry according to each garment’s care label, and clean your washer filters and dryer lint screen as your appliance instructions require. These steps can reduce hair, but no universal removal percentage or guaranteed one-cycle solution has been established.
Why cat hair should be removed before washing
A washing machine is designed to suspend and rinse soil from fabric, not to remove a thick layer of loose fur efficiently. Hair that goes straight into the drum can circulate through the load, collect in filters or seals, and remain attached to garments. Pre-treatment takes the loose material out of the process before water and detergent are added.

The most reliable sequence is mechanical removal first, an optional no-heat tumble second, then a normal wash and dry that follows the garment label. Manufacturer guidance supports the pre-wash steps, but it does not establish one temperature, detergent, cycle, rinse setting, or removal rate that works best for every fabric and machine.
Step 1: Remove loose hair before loading the washer
Shake garments outside
Take the clothes outdoors and shake each item firmly, one at a time. Outdoor shaking keeps released hair from settling onto nearby furniture or another clean surface. Hold delicate garments by their strongest seams rather than pulling on a loose knit or a narrow strap.

After shaking, inspect cuffs, collars, pockets, hems, and the areas where fabric touches your cat. Hair often forms visible mats in these spots. Remove those clumps before using a roller so the adhesive or brush does not become overloaded immediately.
Use a lint roller or brush
Run a lint roller over the garment in overlapping strokes, working from the largest visible areas toward seams and edges. A reusable lint brush is another targeted option. Maytag specifically recommends a lint roller before laundering and notes that it can be useful on hand-knitted items: Maytag’s pet-hair laundry guide.
Choose the tool according to the fabric. A roller is convenient for smooth woven cloth and small areas; a brush can give you more control on textured surfaces. Test either tool on an inconspicuous area of a delicate item and stop if fibers lift, snag, or become fuzzy. The goal is to remove hair, not to abrade the garment.
Do not wet a heavily haired item first
Wet hair can cling more tightly and can be harder to gather mechanically. Keep the first pass dry, remove what you can, and only then put the item into the washer if its care label allows machine washing.
Step 2: Consider a no-heat tumble before washing
If the garment label permits dryer use and your dryer has a no-heat or air-only setting, place the dry clothes in the drum for a brief tumble before washing. Maytag describes this as a way to loosen hair so the dryer lint screen can collect it: manufacturer instructions for removing pet hair from laundry.
This is an option, not a guarantee. Check every garment’s care label first. Do not put items marked for air-drying, line-drying, or dry-cleaning into a dryer unless the care instructions specifically allow it. Also check the dryer manual for the correct air-only program and load size. A no-heat tumble still adds handling and may not be appropriate for garments with fragile trims, loose construction, or shape-sensitive materials.

Clean the lint screen immediately after the pre-wash tumble. Removing the collected hair before the next load prevents it from being carried back into circulation and maintains the screen’s airflow. If your dryer manual specifies additional cleaning, follow that model-specific procedure.
Choose the method that fits your clothes and equipment
There is no single best technique for every household. Use the comparison below to decide how much pre-treatment is sensible for a particular load.

Step 3: Load and wash according to the care label
Sort for fabric and color, not just hair level
Once loose hair is removed, sort clothes according to their care labels and normal laundry practice. Keep garments that require different water temperatures, cycles, or drying methods in separate loads. A heavily haired sweater should not dictate a high-agitation or high-temperature setting for every item in the basket.
Use the label’s instructions as the controlling setting
Set water temperature, cycle, spin, and drying method from the garment label and your washer manual. The available guidance does not establish a universal cat-hair cycle, detergent, additive, or rinse setting. Avoid changing to a harsher program simply because hair is visible; that can damage a fabric without addressing the reason hair remains.
Load the drum loosely enough for the machine to move garments through the wash. Do not compress a large mass of fur-covered clothing into a tightly packed load. Overloading can limit mechanical movement and make any cleaning result less consistent, although the sources do not provide a universal capacity threshold.
Keep loose items out of the washer
Check pockets and remove removable lint, toys, tissues, and other debris before loading. Close fasteners when the care label permits and turn items inside out only when that is compatible with the garment’s instructions. These handling choices keep hair from concentrating in small folds and protect surfaces that can catch loose fibers.

Step 4: Clean filters and hair-catching parts
Washer filters and pet-hair systems
Some appliances have dedicated pet-hair features, but they are not standard on every washer. Samsung describes select models with a Pet Wash cycle and dual filters, and recommends cleaning the described pet-hair filters before every wash: Samsung’s pet-hair laundry guidance.
If your washer has a lint filter, drain filter, pump filter, or removable pet-hair filter, identify the exact part in the owner’s manual before opening it. Switch the appliance off, follow the manual’s access and cleaning instructions, and reinstall the component securely. A filter that is missing, blocked, or incorrectly seated can reduce the appliance’s ability to capture hair and may cause leaks or drainage problems.
Dryer lint screen
After every drying load, remove lint and hair from the screen. Use the procedure for your model rather than assuming that a quick brush-off is sufficient.

Why hair can remain after washing
Static cling and fabric type
Static electricity can keep pet hair attached to clothing or leave it in the washer tub. GE notes that this is especially possible with synthetic or napped fabrics: GE’s guidance on pet hair left in a washer. This is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every load.
When a synthetic or napped item still carries hair, inspect it dry under good light. Remove the remaining strands with a fabric-safe roller or brush before putting the garment through another wash. Repeating a wash without removing the cause can simply move hair around the machine.

Hair was embedded before the load began
Mechanical pre-treatment removes loose hair most effectively. Hair worked deeply into pile, fleece, brushed knits, or seams may need several gentle passes. Do not increase heat or agitation beyond the label in an attempt to force it out.

A filter or screen needs attention
If several garments come out with hair and the appliance’s filters or lint screen have not been cleaned, stop and service those parts according to the manual. Hair that remains in a filter, seal, or screen can be redistributed to later loads.

Dedicated features can be useful for households that wash cat-covered clothing often, but the names describe particular manufacturers’ designs rather than an industry-wide standard.

For recurring heavy shedding, compare the filter design, access for cleaning, compatible cycles, load capacity, and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Do not assume that a pet label means every fabric can use the same program or that all hair will be removed in one pass. Troubleshooting by situation
The clothes are covered in loose hair before washing
- Take the garments outdoors and shake them individually.
- Lift visible clumps from seams, cuffs, collars, and pockets.
- Use a lint roller or fabric-safe brush over the remaining surface.
- If the care label and dryer allow it, use a brief no-heat tumble, then clean the lint screen.
- Wash according to the label.
This sequence keeps the largest amount of loose hair out of the washer. It does not promise complete removal.

Skip the no-heat tumble. Outdoor shaking followed by a lint roller or brush is the relevant pre-wash method. Wash and air-dry or line-dry only as the garment label permits. A dryer is an optional tool in this process, not a requirement.

The item is hand-knitted or delicate
Follow the item’s specific care instructions. Maytag identifies a lint roller as useful for hand-knitted items, but use light pressure and test an unseen area first. If the label calls for hand washing, flat drying, or professional cleaning, do not substitute a machine wash or dryer tumble merely to remove hair.
Hair appears in the washer tub after the cycle
Remove the visible hair, then inspect and clean the washer’s relevant filter, drain area, or pet-hair component according to the owner’s manual. GE identifies static cling as one possible reason hair remains in the tub, particularly with synthetic and napped fabrics. For the next load, spend more time on dry pre-treatment before loading.
The dryer screen fills rapidly
Large amounts of captured hair are expected when a load was heavily coated, but the screen still needs to be cleaned after each cycle. If residue or restricted airflow is suspected, use the dryer manufacturer’s cleaning procedure; Whirlpool provides model-oriented lint-screen and residue guidance. Do not operate the dryer with a blocked or damaged screen.

Use this checklist when the same problem occurs regularly:
- Keep a lint roller or reusable brush where laundry is sorted.
- Shake cat-contact clothing outdoors before it enters the hamper when practical.
- Separate dryer-safe items from garments that must air-dry or receive special care.
- Pre-treat visible hair while the fabric is dry.
- Use an air-only dryer tumble only when both the garment label and dryer manual allow it.
- Clean the lint screen after every dryer use, including the pre-wash tumble.
- Clean washer pet-hair or lint filters at the interval specified for your exact model; Samsung recommends before every wash for the described filters.
- When hair persists, consider static and fabric type before changing wash settings.
- Record which garments need extra pre-treatment so you can handle those items before the next wash.
Limits of what can be promised
Manufacturer instructions support removing loose hair before washing, optionally using a no-heat tumble, and maintaining filters and screens. They do not provide a universal removal percentage, independent ranking of methods, or evidence that a particular detergent, additive, laundry catcher, water temperature, or rinse setting is necessary for every cat-hair load. Results depend on the fabric, the amount of embedded hair, the appliance design, and whether the garment can safely receive each step.
The practical goal is therefore reduction: remove what you can while the garment is dry, use only label-compatible appliance settings, and keep the washer and dryer’s hair-catching parts clean. That approach addresses the loose hair before it becomes a machine-maintenance problem without risking damage from an unnecessarily aggressive cycle.
