You can get a close look at wildlife without getting physically close: follow the local rules, stay back, and use binoculars or camera zoom. There is no single safe viewing distance for every animal or location. If an animal reacts to you, calmly give it more room.
How far away should you stay from wildlife?
Follow the rules for the specific park, refuge, species, and activity. Distance guidance is not universal: it can differ by location, animal, habitat, season, and whether it is a legal minimum or a recommendation. Check the site’s current guidance before you go, and treat any sign of disturbance as a reason to move farther away.

For context, the U.S. National Park Service gives 25 yards as a general example for most wildlife and 100 yards for predators such as bears and wolves. It also notes that some parks set different distances, including a 50-yard minimum. These are examples, not rules for every park. See the NPS wildlife-viewing guidance and check the rules for your destination.
For coastal wildlife in the UK, the Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code advises visitors to try to stay at least 100 metres (330 feet) away, or leave as much space as possible, and to move farther away if an animal seems disturbed. This is UK coastal guidance, not a global standard. Read the UK Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code.

How can you tell if an animal is disturbed?
Watch for changes in behavior rather than waiting for an animal to flee or become aggressive. The Bureau of Land Management lists possible signs in birds such as skittishness, repeatedly raising the head to watch you, excessive preening, alarm calls, or distraction displays. Mammals may become skittish, react strongly to sounds or movements, appear nervous or aggressive, or adopt a posture that looks ready to charge. These examples are not exhaustive, and behavior can be difficult to interpret; when uncertain, increase your distance.
The National Park Service puts the practical rule simply: “In general, if an animal reacts to your presence, you are too close.” — U.S. National Park Service, “I Didn’t Know That!: Leave No Trace Principle #6 – Respect Wildlife,” updated December 23, 2024. For marine animals, NOAA advises visitors to move away cautiously when animals show signs of stress. Learn more in the BLM wildlife-viewing and safety tips and NOAA marine-life viewing guidance.

How to watch without disturbing wildlife
- Do not approach or pursue animals. Do not touch, feed, chase, harass, crowd, circle, tease, move, or separate them. If an animal comes closer, back away calmly and let it choose its path; do not follow it for a photo.
- Give sensitive areas extra space. Keep away from nesting, denning, resting, breeding, and moulting areas. Avoid loud noises and calls that could disturb wildlife.
- Stay on established trails where advised. Predictable human movement helps avoid surprising animals and entering sensitive habitat.
- Manage pets, food, and waste. Leave pets at home when possible. If pets are permitted, follow leash and other site rules. Secure food and pack out food waste and trash.
- Watch from vehicles responsibly. Use a designated pullout and get fully clear of the road rather than stopping in traffic to view an animal.
- Do not handle sick or injured wildlife. Contact park or refuge staff, or the relevant wildlife responder, for help.
For marine wildlife, follow local rules and keep interactions at a distance. NOAA says not to interact with marine mammals or sea turtles, even if they approach you.
How to get a closer look without moving closer
Binoculars are a straightforward way to see detail while maintaining distance. A spotting scope or a camera with zoom or a telephoto lens can also help. You do not need specialized gear to watch safely: a phone camera may be enough for a casual memory, but do not approach just to improve the shot. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance also notes that a naturalist guide can be as simple as a brochure or phone app.

What to do before a wildlife-watching trip
- Check local access and wildlife rules. Look up distance requirements, closures, pet restrictions, and any instructions for the species or activity you expect to encounter.
- Learn what you may see. Research likely species, habitat, season, and time of day. A field guide, brochure, or app can help with identification.
- Choose an approved viewing area. Consider whether your presence could disturb wildlife and whether a guide or special equipment is appropriate. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s wildlife-viewing advice covers these planning considerations.
- Pack for the conditions. Bring water and sun protection as appropriate, and carry only the viewing equipment you need.
