Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePreparing a condor for release takes more than treating an injury or confirming that a bird can fly. Recovery teams assess its health and behavior, build its flight capacity, acclimate it to the release area, fit identification and tracking equipment, and monitor it after it leaves the enclosure. The route differs for captive-bred condors and rescued wild birds, and practices vary by site and individual.
Two routes can lead to release
A captive-bred condor is raised at a propagation facility and prepared as part of a planned release cohort. A rescued condor has already lived in the wild; it may enter rehabilitation after injury or disease and be considered for return once its condition and behavior allow. In a 2023 update, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service described three rescued birds that had received care after exposure to highly pathogenic avian influenza and were acclimating in a release pen. That example does not mean every rehabilitated condor is releasable: teams consider behavioral as well as physical readiness.

How teams prepare a candidate
1. Assess health and behavior
Readiness is broader than recovery from illness or injury. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service field report documented criteria including physical and behavioral health, successful socialization with other candidates, reduced habituation to people, and aversion training to help birds avoid power poles. In that report, limiting human contact was intended to prevent taming; it does not mean birds were deprived of veterinary care. These are documented practices at a particular program, not a universal current checklist.

2. Build flight capacity and acclimate to the area
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says captive-bred condors may spend 18 to 24 months at a propagation center before moving to a larger pen to build flight muscles, and later to field pens to acclimate to their surroundings. The agency describes this sequence in its 2023 account of the California Condor Recovery Program; the stated duration is not necessarily the same for every bird or facility.

A separate USFWS report on the 2015 field year at Bitter Creek says pre-release condors stayed in a flight pen for at least six weeks. The pen helped them become familiar with their surroundings and with wild condors that might perch or feed nearby. Staff observed the birds two to four days per week in four-hour periods to assess social behavior and physical health. Those details describe Bitter Creek at that time, not a schedule followed at every release site.
3. Assign identification and tracking equipment
Condors receive individual names or identification numbers, also called studbook numbers, so biologists can follow medical histories and behavior. Before release, the Bitter Creek report describes fitting each bird with ID tags and a VHF transmitter. Field teams use VHF antennas and GPS units to track birds. The equipment helps make post-release monitoring possible; it is part of a recovery program, not a consumer product recommendation.

4. Open the enclosure and keep monitoring
Release is a transition, not the end of care. The USFWS describes monitoring free-flying birds and providing supplemental food as parts of recovery work. A 2023 agency feature notes that some newly released condors return to the pen for food while developing foraging skills. Returning for supplemental food is support some birds receive, not a guaranteed feeding schedule for every bird.
Health work continues after release
The National Park Service says biologists attempt to trap wild condors yearly to replace transmitters and test blood for elevated lead. Its explainer identifies lead as the main cause of death for condors. These are continuing health and monitoring activities, rather than steps every bird completes before release.

Wild nestlings may also be handled as part of monitoring. When a nest is safe to enter, biologists may check the chick, remove trash, and fit a radio transmitter and vinyl ID tag at about four months of age. This applies to nestlings in the wild, not to every condor being prepared for release.

In its 2025 population status report, published in 2026, the USFWS counted 46 captive condors released to the wild in 2025. The report includes two birds released in early January 2026 in its 2025 release and wild-population totals. It also counted 215 captive condors, a total that includes breeding birds, birds on exhibit, pre-release captive chicks, non-releasable birds, and birds returned for behavioral reasons. These figures describe the program’s reported population and releases; they do not define an individual bird’s preparation schedule.
