Yes—Angola’s “ghost elephants” are real, elusive savanna elephants in the Lisima highlands, not a new species or anything supernatural. A 2026 project account reports that whole-genome sequencing of 25 dung samples collected in 2024 confirmed eight individuals; preliminary comparisons show a partially distinct genetic signal most closely aligned with Namibia. That sample is not a census, and the elephants’ full population size, history, and movement routes remain uncertain.

The search, followed by conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer Steve Boyes in Werner Herzog’s documentary Ghost Elephants, is also a story about local knowledge, Angola’s history, and the Okavango watershed.

Why these elephants seem to disappear

Reports describe elephants that are difficult to see and often move at night or twilight. Dense vegetation and remote terrain make direct observation difficult, so expeditions may rely on tracks, damaged saplings, dung, and other signs of movement.

Lisima Ly Mwono includes remote highlands, valleys, rivers, wetlands, and forest. A lack of sightings or camera images does not mean elephants are absent; it may reflect where cameras are placed and when the animals move.

Local trackers are central to the search. They interpret tracks, feeding signs, terrain, and changes in movement. The National Geographic account describes tracker Abraão António Luhoke redirecting the search toward Cangamba after finding elephant sign.

The conservation work described by the project involves local guardians and master trackers, field-team training, non-invasive sampling, and community-led monitoring. Local knowledge is an essential part of the work, not a substitute for scientific evidence.

Why Angola’s history matters

Angola experienced nearly continuous conflict across the independence struggle from 1961 to 1974 and the civil war from 1975 to 2002, according to National Geographic’s 2026 feature. Conflict, insecurity, and ivory hunting form important context for understanding why elephants may avoid people.

A 2015 survey reported about 4,000 living elephants in southeast Angola, as reported by National Geographic in 2026. That is a historical regional figure, not a current count of elephants in Lisima. The same feature describes anecdotal reports from the 1980s of around 100,000 elephants killed for ivory to fund the war, while noting that ecologists considered the war’s full impact uncertain. This should not be treated as a verified total.

War and hunting may have shaped elephants’ wariness, but the evidence described does not establish a genetic explanation for that behavior. Learned responses and social memory are also possible explanations; more research would be needed to distinguish them.

Local communities knew about the elephants and their signs before outside researchers obtained clear images. The nickname “ghost elephants” reflects their elusiveness, not a paranormal claim. Cultural understandings should be treated respectfully as local knowledge and worldview, not as scientific evidence about taxonomy.

What evidence do researchers have?

The evidence ranges from community reports and field signs to photographs and genomic analysis. Each kind answers different questions; none should be mistaken for a complete population count.

Evidence What it can establish What it cannot establish by itself
Community reports and tracking People know where elephants and their signs have been observed and can guide field searches. A report alone does not establish population size or taxonomic status.
Tracks, feeding signs, and dung Elephants use an area, and signs can help trackers follow movement. Field signs alone do not establish an animal’s genetic identity.
Camera and phone images Images provide direct visual evidence of elephants in the landscape. A few images do not provide a reliable census or prove a separate species.
Whole-genome analysis of dung The Wilderness Project reports that 25 samples collected in 2024 confirmed eight individuals, including three males and five females. Eight confirmed individuals are a sample, not the total population or a formal species description.
Genetic corridor modelling Models can suggest possible historical or continuing connectivity between populations. A modelled corridor is not direct proof that elephants currently travel a specific route.

Community knowledge, field signs, and images

Trackers follow footprints and feeding traces, examine damaged vegetation, and use dung to identify places elephants have passed. These signs can help locate animals even when direct observation is rare. National Geographic also reports earlier camera-trap images and a shaky but unmistakable phone video from September 2024.

Such evidence supports the presence of elephants, but it does not by itself tell researchers how many live in the highlands. Camera results depend on the animals’ movements, camera placement, and other conditions.

What the dung DNA shows

The Wilderness Project’s 2026 account reports that whole-genome sequencing of 25 dung samples collected in 2024 confirmed eight individual elephants: three males and five females. These are the individuals confirmed in that sample set, not the whole population.

Preliminary comparisons with reference populations in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and East and West Africa place the elephants within the savanna elephant group, Loxodonta africana. The project reports a partially distinct genetic signal most closely aligned with Namibia and, to a lesser extent, Botswana. It also reports limited mitochondrial diversity, which it says is consistent with a small founding population and relative isolation.

These results do not establish a new species. Genetic distinctiveness can describe variation within a species; the project’s results identify the elephants as savanna elephants and describe their signal as partially distinct.

Are ghost elephants a new species?

No. The current project account identifies them as savanna elephants and reports a partially distinct genetic signal. “Ghost elephants” is a nickname, not a taxonomic category, and the evidence reviewed does not establish a new species or subspecies.

The most accurate summary is that genomic analysis has confirmed eight sampled individuals and suggests a distinctive signal within the savanna elephant story. Researchers are expanding sampling and analysis; the population’s full history and relationships remain under study.

What researchers know about possible movement

Fine-scale modelling reported by the Wilderness Project suggests possible gene-flow corridors from the south and southwest toward the Angolan highlands, especially toward Namibia. The project says the possibility of a link to the larger KAZA range is being investigated.

These are modelled possibilities, not directly observed migration routes. The project’s next steps include expanding sampling, improving sequencing and analysis where needed, and combining genetic findings with landscape data.

How many ghost elephants are there?

No comprehensive current census of the Lisima population is established by the sources reviewed. The Wilderness Project’s eight genomic confirmations are a minimum confirmed sample, not an estimate of the total number present.

National Geographic’s 2026 feature attributes an estimate of around 100 elephants moving through the region to Boyes, and describes an estimate of around 100 within a Luchazi leader’s territory. These are estimates, not a systematic census. The 2015 estimate of about 4,000 elephants applied to southeast Angola more broadly and should not be presented as a current Lisima count.

Why the Okavango connection raises the stakes

The Lisima highlands are associated with the source region of the Okavango system. Protecting the landscape can benefit wildlife, habitat, and people beyond the places where the elephants have been tracked. As Boyes put it in National Geographic’s feature, “If you want to save the delta, you have to protect its source.”

Project Lisima describes conservation involving local guardians, trackers, researchers, non-invasive sampling, and community-led monitoring. Supporting that work and protecting the watershed are more appropriate than trying to track the elephants independently. Their sensitivity to disturbance and the region’s access and security context make the search unsuitable as an informal wildlife excursion.

The film brings together the search, local knowledge, conservation, and the limits of observation. Its storytelling should be kept separate from the scientific status of claims: a documentary can explore a mystery without resolving the elephants’ population size, movement history, or taxonomy.

A book-length companion to the expedition

Steve Boyes’s Okavango and the Source of Life is a companion coffee-table book announced for March 3, 2026. Official film press notes describe it as including more than 100 photographs, maps, and reflections on expeditions to the Angolan headwaters. It offers geographic and conservation context, but it does not settle the scientific questions about the elephants. Check current retailer listings for availability and edition details.

What would researchers need to learn next?

The project describes plans to extend sampling and integrate genetic and landscape evidence. Further work could help clarify how widely the elephants range and how the highlands connect to other populations.

  1. Expand non-invasive sampling: Collect and analyze samples from under-sampled areas to improve understanding of distribution and genetic variation.
  2. Estimate population size: Use a carefully designed survey; tracks, images, and the number of DNA-confirmed individuals are not a census.
  3. Test connectivity hypotheses: Compare genetic signals with landscape evidence and, where possible, direct movement observations.
  4. Continue community-led monitoring: Support local guardians and trackers in monitoring elephants and their habitat.
