Every late summer, residents of Heimaey in Iceland search the streets for stranded baby Atlantic puffins. These young birds, known as pufflings, can be drawn away from the sea by artificial lights during their first nighttime flight. The Puffling Patrol collects them safely, has them assessed, and either releases them toward the ocean or sends them to the Puffin Rescue Centre for rehabilitation.

Residents of Heimaey, Iceland, rescue stranded baby Atlantic puffins—called pufflings—during the birds’ late-summer first flights. The community-led Puffling Patrol searches the town after dark, places disoriented birds in secure boxes, and takes them for assessment. Healthy, fully developed pufflings are released toward the sea; injured, oiled, underweight, or down-covered birds receive care at the Puffin Rescue Centre instead.

Where Iceland’s Puffling Patrol takes place

The patrol is associated with Heimaey, the principal island of the Vestmannaeyjar, or Westman Islands, off Iceland’s southern coast. Heimaey supports a major Atlantic puffin breeding colony. During summer, puffins nest in burrows in the island’s cliffs and grassy slopes before the young birds leave for the open ocean.

The main fledging period is usually late August and early September, although the wider rescue operation can begin earlier and continue later. For example, the SEA LIFE Trust reported a 2025 operational season running from July 29 through September 29, while the peak nightly departures occur later in the summer. Exact dates and rescue totals vary from year to year.

Why baby puffins end up in town

A puffling spends roughly six weeks being raised in its burrow. When it is ready to leave, it normally emerges at night and navigates toward the sea using natural light, including moonlight. On Heimaey, artificial lights from Vestmannaeyjar can interfere with that route. Some fledglings become disoriented, fly inland, or land in streets, parking areas, harbor spaces, on rooftops, or in other dangerous places rather than reaching the water.

This is a recurring light-disorientation problem, not evidence that the young birds have intentionally chosen the town as a habitat. The patrol helps individual birds, but it does not by itself eliminate the broader hazard created by artificial nighttime lighting.

PBS WILD HOPE’s account of the patrol places the rescues in that wider context: a local community responding to a predictable consequence of the island’s lights during fledging season.

How a typical rescue works

  1. Residents search after dark. Local people, including families and children, look along streets, around the harbor, in parking areas, and in other places where a puffling may have landed.
  2. The bird is contained safely. Rescuers use cardboard boxes or other secure temporary containers so a bird is not left exposed in town overnight. Each bird needs space, ventilation, and calm handling; this is not a situation for treating a puffling like a pet.
  3. The puffling is assessed and recorded. At the rescue facility, birds may be weighed, measured, marked, and examined. These records help staff decide what each bird needs and can contribute to longer-term monitoring.
  4. A healthy bird is released. A sufficiently developed, healthy puffling can be taken to the coast and released toward the ocean.
  5. A bird needing help enters rehabilitation. Injuries, oil or other contamination, low body weight, and retained down feathers can all mean that a puffling is not ready for life at sea. Those birds remain at the Puffin Rescue Centre for treatment, feeding, cleaning, and rehabilitation when recovery is possible.

Are pufflings really thrown from cliffs?

Photographs and videos sometimes reduce the final release to the startling phrase “throwing baby puffins off cliffs.” That description needs qualification. The purpose is to give an adequately developed fledgling a safe launch toward the water, not to harm it. More importantly, not every rescued puffling is released this way: the bird is assessed first, and birds that are injured, contaminated, underweight, or still downy are treated at the rescue centre.

An untrained person should not capture and release a wild seabird based on an online description. The Heimaey patrol is a coordinated local effort with knowledge of the island, the fledging season, and the rescue centre’s procedures.

What happened during the 2025 season?

The SEA LIFE Trust’s current season report gives a useful snapshot of the scale of the work. These are 2025 figures, not a guaranteed annual average:

2025 report Number or amount
Pufflings rescued and released across the island More than 7,000
Pufflings admitted to the rescue hospital 276
Of those hospital admissions: injured 77
Oiled or dirty 32
Underweight 65
Still downy 134
Average hospital stay 11 days
Maximum number of birds in the hospital at one time 110
Labor More than 2,500 hours
Fish used for feeding 138 kilograms
Avian-flu tests More than 300
Projected care costs 8,933,643 Icelandic króna

The same SEA LIFE Trust source describes more than 700,000 pairs of Atlantic puffins in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago during the summer breeding period. Another sanctuary account describes roughly 1.5 million adult puffins pairing and nesting around Heimaey. Those statements use different wording and may reflect different counting methods, so they should not be combined into one supposedly exact population estimate.

The rescue centre’s role

The SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary operates Iceland’s Puffin Rescue Centre and supports the rescue, rehabilitation, and release work. The centre deals with more than birds that simply took a wrong turn. A puffling that lands around the harbor may become dirty or oiled, and oil is particularly dangerous because it can damage the waterproofing that seabirds need to stay warm and buoyant.

Staff therefore have to distinguish between a bird that is ready to return to the coast and one that needs days or weeks of care. Treatment can include examination, cleaning, feeding, monitoring, and protection from the elements. The 2025 report’s average 11-day stay illustrates why the patrol is not just a brief collection service: a portion of the birds require sustained rehabilitation.

Why the patrol matters to conservation

The patrol is a welfare response, but it also produces information. Weights, physical condition, markings, and treatment outcomes help document the fledglings passing through the rescue system. Researchers associated with the South Iceland Nature Research Center have used rescued pufflings in population studies, including ringing birds so their movements and ages can be tracked.

The patrol should not be presented as proof that every puffling survives or that the island’s lighting problem has been solved. It is a practical community safety net for birds that become stranded, paired with rehabilitation and monitoring that can improve understanding of the local colony.

A child-friendly way to learn about the patrol

Families and educators who want a story connected to the real rescue tradition may enjoy Puffling Patrol by Ted and Betsy Lewin. Lee & Low describes the illustrated nonfiction book as an account of the authors’ Iceland trip and the children who help rescue lost puffins and return them to the sea. It is a book recommendation, not rescue equipment: ordinary visitors should never attempt to handle wild pufflings without direction from local wildlife professionals.

What visitors should—and should not—do

  • Do follow local instructions if you encounter a puffling in Vestmannaeyjar.
  • Do contact the local rescue effort or rescue centre rather than improvising medical care.
  • Do keep dogs, cats, and crowds away from a grounded seabird.
  • Do not feed, wash, or release an apparently stranded puffling unless trained local rescuers tell you to do so.
  • Do not assume that every bird on land needs the same response. A healthy bird in a safe location and an oiled or injured bird require different decisions.

The familiar cardboard box and flashlight belong to a supervised community patrol—not a do-it-yourself wildlife-rescue kit. The safest help for an untrained observer is to reduce disturbance, keep pets away, and get advice from the responsible local organization.

The bigger issue: light pollution

Every rescued puffling represents an immediate success, but the recurring need for the patrol points to a preventable environmental pressure. Artificial light can alter the nighttime route of fledgling seabirds, drawing them away from the sea. Long-term protection therefore involves more than collecting birds: it also requires understanding and managing lighting around important seabird colonies.

Heimaey’s residents show what coordinated local action can accomplish when a seasonal wildlife problem is recognized and organized around. The patrol saves individual birds, the rescue centre gives vulnerable ones a chance to recover, and the records help researchers study the colony. None of those efforts makes the underlying light-disorientation hazard disappear, which is why the story is both a rescue success and a reminder to design human spaces with wildlife in mind.

Source note: The latest figures in this article refer specifically to the SEA LIFE Trust’s 2025 Puffling Season report. Rescue dates, totals, hospital admissions, and operating costs can change from season to season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a puffling?

A puffling is a baby Atlantic puffin, specifically a young puffin that is leaving its nesting burrow for the first time. On Heimaey, fledglings usually depart at night in late summer.

Why do pufflings get stranded in Iceland’s towns?

Artificial town lights can disorient nighttime fledglings that would normally use natural light to navigate toward the ocean. Some land in streets, parking areas, harbor spaces, or on rooftops instead.

Are all rescued pufflings thrown from cliffs?

No. Healthy, fully developed birds may be released toward the ocean after assessment, but injured, oiled, underweight, or still-downy pufflings are taken to the rescue centre for rehabilitation.

What should you do if you find a stranded puffin?

Do not feed, wash, or release a stranded puffling without instructions from local wildlife rescuers. Keep pets and crowds away, avoid unnecessary handling, and contact the local rescue effort or rescue centre.

The Bottom Line

Heimaey’s Puffling Patrol rescues Atlantic puffin fledglings that are disoriented by town lights, but release is only one possible outcome. Each bird is assessed first; healthy pufflings go back to sea, while injured, oiled, underweight, or downy birds receive rehabilitation. The patrol is a community response to light pollution—not a DIY wildlife-rescue activity—and its records also support puffin conservation research.
