IISER Bhopal-associated researchers published a draft genome sequence for the Indian peafowl in 2018. It gave scientists a reference for investigating peafowl biology, evolution and visible traits such as feather patterning—but it did not show that a single gene explains the peacock’s appearance. Later peafowl genome studies have since expanded this resource.
What did the IISER Bhopal-associated team do?
In the study published on September 19, 2018, researchers sampled about 2 milliliters of blood from a two-year-old male Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) at Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal. The paper reports institute ethics approval and permission from the forest authority. The team prepared genomic libraries, sequenced them on Illumina platforms, then computationally assembled and annotated the data. For comparison, it examined genomes from chicken, turkey, duck, flycatcher and zebra finch.
The authors described the work as the first peacock genome sequence and comparative analysis. They wrote that it provides “novel genomic and evolutionary insights into the molecular understanding toward the phenotypic evolution of Indian peacock.” The full study is available in Frontiers in Genetics and PubMed Central.
What did the 2018 draft genome contain?
These are figures reported by Jaiswal and colleagues for that study’s draft assembly, not measures of peacock populations or a claim that every part of the genome was resolved.

| Study measure | 2018 reported value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence data | 153.7 Gb | Total amount of sequence data generated. |
| Genome coverage | Approximately 136× | Approximate sequencing depth relative to the estimated genome size. |
| Estimated draft assembly | 1.13 Gb | Length of the assembled draft sequence. |
| Scaffold N50 | 25.6 kb | A measure of scaffold contiguity: half the assembled sequence is in scaffolds of this length or longer. |
| Contig N50 | 19.3 kb | A corresponding contiguity measure for contigs, the sequences assembled without gaps. |
| BUSCO assessment | 77.6% complete; 13.5% partial; 8.9% missing | Assessment of conserved genes recovered in the assembly. |
| Predicted protein-coding genes | 15,970 | Genes predicted computationally from the assembly. |
The relatively short N50 values and BUSCO results are reasons to describe this as a draft, not a fully complete or chromosome-level genome. The figures characterize this particular assembly and should not be compared with later studies without checking their species or sample, sequencing methods, assembly methods and metric definitions.
Why does a peacock genome matter?
A genome is a reference that lets researchers ask how inherited genetic differences and evolutionary changes relate to an animal’s development and traits. Comparing peafowl DNA with that of other birds can help generate and investigate questions about how peafowl evolved and how their distinctive features develop.

The 2018 paper reports comparative and evolutionary analyses and discusses candidate genes. Nature India’s coverage of the study describes work relating to feather patterning and skeletal development. Such findings point to possible associations and avenues for study; they are not a complete causal explanation of the peacock’s plumage or evidence that one gene produces its elaborate feathers.
Is the 2018 sequence still the latest peafowl genome?
No. It is an early draft, not the only or most recent genome resource. A 2019 study assembled a male blue peacock genome using Oxford Nanopore and Illumina sequencing. A 2023 study reported high-quality genome assemblies for blue and green peafowl and examined evolutionary differences between them. Those papers address a broader and developing body of work, rather than making the 2018 report irrelevant.

The 2018 authors said that sequence data were deposited in the Sequence Read Archive. They also reported making the draft assembly, statistics, gene set, annotations, alignments and gene trees available through their project server, with citation requested. NCBI’s BioProject database is another route to project-linked sequence records; search for the peafowl project rather than assuming every file is hosted on one page.
