Sangareddy Rural police said the accused were unidentified; available CCTV was inconclusive, and a post-mortem could not establish the cause of death because the body had decomposed. The case has widened into a dispute over how the Kandi campus manages free-roaming dogs. Students and activists allege starvation, injuries, damaged water bowls and disciplinary pressure on people who feed animals. IIT Hyderabad denies tolerating cruelty and says it is using a humane, scientifically informed population-management programme. What happened to the dog at IIT Hyderabad?
According to reports in Telangana Today and Deccan Chronicle, a community dog was allegedly assaulted on the institute’s Kandi campus on 27 September 2026 and died later. A complaint was filed on 30 September, with support from PETA India and the Stray Animal Foundation of India (SAFI). Sangareddy Rural police registered an FIR on 1 October under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The reported ₹5,000 penalty is a student allegation, not an independently confirmed IIT Hyderabad figure. The available coverage also does not establish how many dogs, feeders or incidents were involved, or whether any disciplinary action was formally imposed.
How has IIT Hyderabad responded?
IIT Hyderabad says it does not support cruelty and follows “humane and scientifically informed canine population management.” An institute official told Deccan Chronicle that the campus was also enraged by the dog’s death and that cruelty is not tolerated.
The institute’s welfare figures are its own reported figures. IIT Hyderabad said more than 90% of campus dogs had been vaccinated and sterilised. Its official account also said that 106 community dogs were vaccinated in a single September 2026 drive conducted with the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Sangareddy, People for Animals Hyderabad and Blue Cross of Hyderabad.

The institute said designated feeding points were placed 300–500 metres from hostels and academic buildings. It described that arrangement as a way to reduce dog congregations in busy areas while preserving responsible feeding. The reports do not independently audit the vaccination percentage, sterilisation records, feeding-point map or the number of dogs living on campus.

What can students and staff do while the investigation continues?
People who witness suspected cruelty should avoid confronting a suspected attacker. Note the time and exact location, preserve original photographs or video, identify witnesses willing to speak to police, and report the incident promptly to Sangareddy Rural police and an established animal-welfare organisation. Feeders can coordinate with campus administration on a written rota, keep food away from entrances and traffic, remove leftovers, and record missing or damaged bowls so individual incidents can be checked rather than passed around as rumours.

PETA India’s cruelty-response officer Ishani Rathee urged the public to report animal-cruelty cases, warning that people who abuse animals may pose risks to others. That observation is an appeal for reporting, not evidence that anyone connected with the IIT Hyderabad case harmed a person.
