Impulse control is not a personality switch; it is a set of behaviors your dog can learn through short, reward-based practice. At home, teach your dog to wait for a food bowl or doorway, leave a tempting item, relax on a mat, and pause play for a calm behavior. Start where your dog can succeed, reward the behavior you want, and increase duration or distraction in small steps.

These games can make everyday routines safer and calmer, but they do not guarantee that every dog will stop grabbing, jumping or rushing. If your dog becomes distressed, highly aroused or shows no steady progress, make the exercise easier and seek veterinary or qualified behavior support.

What impulse control means for a dog

Impulse control is the ability to pause, choose a trained behavior and wait for access to something desirable. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home summarizes the starting point clearly: “Self-control doesn’t come naturally to dogs and is a skill that they need to learn.” Its guidance was published on 9 August 2024 and updated 30 June 2026 (Battersea, “Impulse Control In Dogs”).

In practical terms, you are not trying to make a dog generally “calm” in every situation. You are teaching specific choices in specific contexts: four paws on the floor while dinner arrives, turning away from a dropped object, waiting for a door to open, relaxing on a bed, or stopping play briefly. Each successful repetition makes that particular behavior easier to use.

#1 Best Overall
MikooMikoo Lightly Padded Roll-Up Travel Dog Mat Settle & Place Training
  • 【Thin and portable】:A lightly padded travel dog mat for camping and outings, designed to roll up easily rather than provide the cushioning of a thick dog bed.
  • 【Roll up and carry】:This portable dog mat folds into a compact bundle with a built-in handle and snap closure for storage and travel.
  • 【Fabric on both sides】:No non-slip backing; may slide on smooth floors. For use as a dog settle mat or place training mat, choose a stable surface and supervise your dog.
  • 【Water-resistant and washable】:Oxford fabric handles light splashes. Wipe clean or machine wash cold on a gentle cycle; air dry. Not intended for soaking or standing water.
  • 【Size and unpacking】:Medium measures 37.4 x 25.5 inches. Check your dog's lying space before ordering. Vacuum packaging may leave creases; unroll and smooth flat before use.

Use positive reinforcement: arrange the situation so the dog can perform the behavior, then deliver food, access, play or another reward immediately. Avoid physically forcing a dog to hold a position. If the dog repeatedly breaks, the setup is too difficult, the reward is too exciting, or the dog may be uncomfortable.

Set up short, safe practice sessions

You need very little equipment. Use ordinary kibble or small training treats, the dog’s bowl, a closed interior door, a mat or existing bed, and a favorite toy. A clicker is optional; the SPCA of Wake County describes it as one way to mark calm behavior (SPCA of Wake County).

  • Train in a quiet area first, with the dog rested enough to think but not so hungry or excited that the reward overwhelms the exercise.
  • Ask for a behavior the dog already knows, such as sitting, standing with four paws down, lying down or looking away.
  • Deliver the reward while the desired behavior is happening. Do not wait until the dog has lunged or grabbed and then pay for the mistake.
  • Change only one difficulty at a time: duration, distance, movement, distraction or reward intensity.
  • Use a consistent release word such as “okay” when the dog may move toward the reward. The cue should predict access, not end in a correction.
  • End while the dog is still succeeding. Several easy repetitions are more useful than one long, frantic attempt.

The table below helps you choose a game without treating any method as universally best. The cited organizations do not provide comparative trials or success rates, so select the exercise that matches the immediate problem.

Everyday situation Game Basic setup Reward and arousal considerations How to adjust difficulty
Rushing dinner Food-bowl wait Bowl and a known stationary behavior The meal itself is the reward; use a calm starting behavior Lower the bowl more slowly or begin farther from the feeding spot
Grabbing food or objects Leave it Treat in a fist, then hand, then floor Food rewards disengagement; keep unsafe items managed Use a less tempting item, more distance or better hand protection
Bolting through thresholds Door wait Interior door opened a crack Passing through is the reward; start away from exterior hazards Open the door in smaller increments or stand farther back
Difficulty relaxing Settle on a mat Mat or bed and low-value treats Quiet food rewards usually create less arousal than a toy Shorten the interval between rewards or remove distractions
Overexcited play Pause and resume Gentle toy play and a calm behavior Resuming play is the reward; stop if arousal keeps rising Reduce play intensity, then build it gradually

Game 1: Wait for the food bowl

This exercise teaches that calm behavior makes dinner available. The American Kennel Club recommends setting the bar where the dog can succeed (AKC, “Impulse Control for Dogs: Dog Self-Control Training”).

  1. Prepare the meal and ask for a behavior your dog already performs, such as sitting or standing with all four paws on the floor.
  2. Begin lowering the bowl a small amount. Keep your movement slow enough that the dog can remain in position.
  3. If the dog rises, jumps or moves toward the bowl, lift it calmly and make the next attempt easier. Do not scold or push the dog back.
  4. Continue lowering the bowl in small increments. The moment it reaches the floor and the dog is still waiting, give your release cue.
  5. Allow the dog to eat after the release. With repetition, the dog learns that holding position—not rushing—opens access to food.

Common problems

  • The dog launches as soon as the bowl appears: begin with the bowl lower or farther away, and reward a single second of stillness before trying again.
  • The dog waits but becomes tense: reduce the duration and watch for hard staring, frantic movement or vocalization. A calmer setup matters more than a longer wait.
  • The dog breaks only at the last inch: lower the bowl in several tiny stages and release sooner, then build up gradually.

Keep the routine predictable. The release cue should be the event that allows eating; the dog should not learn that pushing through your hands makes the bowl arrive faster.

Game 2: Teach “leave it”

“Leave it” is a disengagement exercise: the dog learns to stop investigating one item and turn back toward you. It is not a guarantee against swallowing medication, food, rubbish or another hazard, so continue to prevent access and supervise your dog.

  1. Place a treat inside a closed fist. Let the dog sniff or paw without opening your hand.
  2. The instant the dog backs away, pauses or looks elsewhere, reward from your other hand. The reward should come from you, not from the fist.
  3. Repeat until the dog quickly disengages from the closed fist.
  4. Present the treat in an open hand. Close your hand if the dog moves in, then reward disengagement from the other hand.
  5. Put a treat on the floor and protect it with your hand or foot. Reward the dog for leaving it and looking back to you.
  6. Only when this is reliable should you add distance, movement or a mildly distracting environment. Keep dangerous objects out of reach throughout training.

Reward the choice to disengage rather than waiting for a perfect formal position. If the dog keeps pawing, use a less exciting item, cover it more completely or return to the closed-fist stage.

Game 3: Wait at a door

Practice first with an interior door, not a front door opening onto traffic or other hazards. The goal is to wait while the opening changes, then move through only after a release.

  1. Stand with your dog far enough from the closed door that it can remain relaxed. Ask for a sit, stand or other easy stationary behavior.
  2. Turn the handle and open the door only a crack.
  3. If the dog moves toward the gap, close the door without drama and make the next opening smaller or start farther back.
  4. Repeat until the dog can watch the crack appear without advancing.
  5. Increase the opening in small increments. When the dog can wait with the door open, give your release cue and walk through together.
  6. Practice in several calm indoor contexts before transferring the skill to an exterior door, car door or gate.

Do not test this behavior for the first time when a delivery person, visitor or exciting animal is outside. Add those distractions only after the quiet version is dependable, and return to an easier stage whenever the dog begins rushing.

Game 4: Settle on a mat

A settle exercise teaches relaxation, not merely the appearance of lying down. VCA’s instructions use a mat or bed, small low-value treats and quiet reinforcement (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Teaching Settle and Calm”).

  1. Put the mat in a quiet room. Stand or sit nearby and wait for the dog to investigate it.
  2. When the dog lies down, deliver a small treat quietly. At first, reward often enough that remaining on the mat is easy.
  3. Look for softer signs of relaxation, such as shifting onto a hip, lowering the head or resting the chin. Reinforce those postures instead of insisting on a rigid down.
  4. As the dog remains relaxed, lengthen the interval between treats by small amounts. If the dog gets up, calmly reset without turning the mistake into a confrontation.
  5. Say “settle” as the dog begins to relax so the word becomes associated with the behavior already occurring.
  6. Add mild distractions one at a time. When you introduce a new distraction, make the duration or distance easier again, then build it back up.

Food is often a better reward than a toy for calm-around-people practice when toys make your dog more excited. Watch body language: repeated scanning, panting unrelated to heat, avoidance, freezing, frantic movement or attempts to escape mean the exercise needs to be simplified. Do not force a distressed dog to remain still during handling or settling work.

Game 5: Pause and resume play

Play can teach self-control when the dog learns that a brief calm behavior makes the fun continue. VCA advises tailoring play to the dog’s age, development, health and physical structure (VCA, “Play and Exercise”). Battersea also recommends clear start and stop cues and drop or leave-it skills around toys (Battersea).

  1. Begin with gentle play using a toy your dog can release safely. Establish a clear start cue, such as “play.”
  2. After a short bout, stop moving the toy and wait. If needed, cue an easy sit, down or release of the toy.
  3. The moment the dog offers the calm behavior, resume play. The game itself is the reward.
  4. Repeat until the dog expects brief pauses rather than escalating to keep the toy moving.
  5. Increase play intensity only gradually. If the dog becomes mouthy, frantic, vocal or unable to release the toy, stop or switch to a quieter activity and return to an easier version later.

Do not use repeated high jumps, sudden stops or sharp direction changes for puppies, growing dogs or dogs whose health or structure makes those movements risky. Provide rest when the dog is fatigued.

How to make every game harder without losing control

Progression should be measured by the dog’s behavior, not by a preset schedule. Build one element at a time:

  1. Duration: ask for a slightly longer wait or a slightly longer interval between settle rewards.
  2. Distance: move the bowl, your body or the tempting item only a little farther away.
  3. Distraction: add a mild sound, movement or household activity after the quiet version is reliable.
  4. Reward value: reserve more exciting food or play for situations the dog can already handle, rather than starting with the strongest temptation.

Battersea recommends introducing new distractions at a distance and making the exercise easier again in a more distracting setting. If the dog fails twice in a row, reduce the difficulty immediately. A successful repetition should be the goal; endurance is not.

Choose the right game for the problem

  • Rushing meals: use the food-bowl wait, beginning with a stationary behavior the dog knows.
  • Snatching dropped items: practice leave it with safe training objects while managing all genuinely dangerous items.
  • Bolting through thresholds: use the interior-door progression before working near an outside exit.
  • Jumping on visitors or failing to rest: teach settle on a mat in a quiet room, then add people at a distance.
  • Play that escalates: use pause-and-resume play with clear start, stop and toy-release cues.

These are separate skills. A dog that waits for a bowl may still rush a door, and a dog that settles in a quiet room may need a new, easier lesson around visitors.

Safety, welfare and when to get help

Impulse-control practice should never replace environmental management. Keep medicines, toxic foods, rubbish and small swallowable objects secured even if your dog performs “leave it” reliably. Use gates, closed doors, leashes or other appropriate barriers when a lapse could cause injury.

Stop and reassess if your dog appears uncomfortable, avoids contact, freezes, snarls or growls during settling or handling. VCA advises veterinary or qualified behavior support when a dog resists with tension or does not make steady progress (VCA). Pain, fear, fatigue or excessive arousal can make a training setup inappropriate; a veterinarian can check health concerns, and a qualified reward-based professional can design a behavior plan.

For puppies and dogs with orthopedic, cardiac or other health limitations, follow veterinary guidance about exercise. Avoid physically demanding versions of these games and provide rest when the dog tires.

A practical home practice sequence

You can rotate the games rather than drilling one behavior until the dog is frustrated. For example, begin with a few easy food-bowl waits at mealtime, practice leave it with a safe object during a quiet part of the day, do a short mat settle while you read, and finish with a gentle pause-and-resume play session. Work at the dog’s current ability, not at an imagined deadline. There is no evidence-based success rate or universal timeline for these exercises; progress is shown by calmer choices in the situations you have actually practiced.

For further reading on “Look at That” games and related behavior work, Veterinary Partner discusses the Control Unleashed book series by Leslie McDevitt (Veterinary Partner). A mat, small treats and an optional clicker are aids, not prerequisites: the essential ingredients are a manageable setup, immediate reinforcement and gradual progression.
