Bhutan’s 2026 survey recorded 26 White-bellied Herons in the wild and five at a conservation breeding center: 31 known individuals in the country. That is the highest Bhutan count since 2003, according to the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), and an encouraging finding—not proof that the species is securely recovering. RSPN’s species page gives an undated estimate of fewer than 60 birds worldwide, so it should not be treated as a fresh global census.
How many White-bellied Herons are left?
The answer depends on the geography and which birds are counted:

- Bhutan: RSPN’s 2026 annual survey recorded 26 wild birds and five at the White-bellied Heron Conservation Center, for 31 known individuals in the country. The report also recorded five active nests.
- Worldwide: RSPN’s species page estimates fewer than 60 remain globally. The page does not clearly date that estimate, so it is not a confirmed 2026 worldwide total.
The Bhutan figure is a national count, not a global census. Nor should the number of birds at the conservation center be confused with the number living in the wild.

The 2026 count
RSPN surveyed 18 designated habitat zones from 1–5 March 2026. In addition to the 26 wild individuals and five birds at the conservation center, the report recorded five active nests. Survey teams detected birds across 10 rivers and tributaries at 16 locations. RSPN called this “the highest record of count so far in Bhutan since 2003.” The result is encouraging, but a single annual survey does not establish a secure long-term recovery.

Why the earlier counts matter
The 2025 survey recorded 24 wild birds and five at the conservation center, or 29 known individuals in Bhutan. Its basin-level findings showed why a small national increase cannot tell the whole story: Mangdechhu had four recorded birds in 2025, down from eight in 2023, and the report noted no sightings in upstream portions of both Punatshangchhu and Mangdechhu.
For comparison, RSPN’s 2024 report recorded 25 birds in Bhutan, including three at the conservation center. It described the global population as fewer than 60 and said Bhutan held more than 45% of it at that time. That percentage belongs to the 2024 report; it should not be recalculated using the 2026 Bhutan count and RSPN’s undated global estimate.

Where the herons live—and why river systems matter
The White-bellied Heron (Ardea insignis) is a large heron of the eastern Himalayas and is assessed as Critically Endangered. RSPN describes its habitat as undisturbed riverine and wetland settings in subtropical and temperate eastern Himalayan forests. The 2026 detections across rivers and tributaries reflect the species’ close association with Bhutan’s river systems.
Its distribution is not uniform across the country. Basin-specific losses or absences can be obscured by a national total, particularly when the overall number is small. The decline in Mangdechhu detections reported in 2025 is one example of why counts need to be read alongside their locations.

What threatens the White-bellied Heron?
A 2015 RSPN workshop account lists infrastructure such as dams, roads, and overhead power lines, as well as hunting, human encroachment, mining, and sand dredging, among threats discussed by conservation practitioners. This is historical threat context, not a new assessment of the species’ status in 2026.
WWF-Bhutan identifies disturbance at nesting sites as a threat to breeding success and survival. It also says juveniles have about 10% survival in the wild; the reviewed WWF-Bhutan page does not give a publication date or study citation for that figure. Low juvenile survival makes successful nesting and protection of breeding areas especially important.

How conservation work is helping
RSPN says it has monitored and conserved the species in Bhutan since 2009 through annual population surveys, habitat assessments, community awareness programs, and protection of nesting sites. The conservation center is also part of the national count: its five birds were reported separately from the 26 recorded in the wild in 2026.

Surveys track where birds are detected and how counts vary; habitat assessment helps identify conditions at important river and wetland sites; and community awareness and nesting-site protection address risks around the places the herons use to breed.
