Choose training based on your dog’s needs, not the label on the service. Group classes are often a good fit for basic manners and puppy socialization; private in-home sessions can address behavior tied to your household or needing individual attention. Day training and board-and-train may teach specific skills, but you must learn how to maintain them. Whatever format you choose, assess the trainer’s methods, safety practices, and owner coaching.
How the main dog-training options differ
| Format | Often a good starting fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Group class or dog training school | Basic manners such as sit, down, and recall; young puppies who need socialization. | Observe a class if possible. Look for comfortable, engaged dogs, enough practice and individual help, humane methods, and clear vaccine and sick-dog policies. |
| Private in-home sessions | A specific issue that needs individual attention or arises in the home, such as resource guarding, handling difficulties, separation anxiety, aggression, house-training problems, excessive barking, or destructive chewing. | Ask whether the trainer is qualified to address your concern and whether they will coordinate with your veterinarian or refer you to a behavior specialist when appropriate. |
| Day training | Owners who want help teaching specified skills. The trainer may work at your home while you are busy or train the dog at the provider’s home or facility. | Make sure the service includes instruction for you on maintaining the dog’s skills. |
| Board-and-train | A program in which the dog stays at the trainer’s kennel for a specified period. | Since you will not be there to supervise, understand and agree with the methods. Require owner instruction and a plan for maintaining the behavior at home. |
These are starting points, not guarantees. Behavior varies, and even a conscientious trainer cannot guarantee a particular outcome. ASPCA guidance on dog behavior issues explains which concerns may need individual help; its dog-training guidance also describes the different service formats.

Should you train your dog at home or choose a group class?
Choose a group class for foundational skills and suitable puppy socialization
A class gives you a structured setting to practice common cues with an instructor present. It can also expose a puppy to other people and dogs in a controlled class environment. Ask to observe before enrolling: watch how the instructor handles different dogs, whether each dog gets practice and individual help, and whether the dogs seem comfortable rather than overwhelmed.
For a puppy class, ask about vaccination requirements and how the provider excludes sick dogs. Discuss the policy with your veterinarian so you can weigh socialization against your puppy’s health circumstances.

The waist belt is adjustable for waist sizes ranging from 25“ to 47”, ensuring a comfortable fit for users. Now, you can confidently focus on your training or outdoor activities without the concern of your pouch slipping off.
Choose in-home help when the household context matters
Some behaviors are difficult to assess or practice in a group setting. Private sessions let a trainer observe relevant parts of your dog’s home environment and tailor coaching to the issue. This can be useful for concerns such as separation anxiety, guarding, house-training, or behavior around household handling. Ask directly whether the trainer has experience with your particular concern; a general obedience instructor may not be the right professional for a serious behavior problem.
What day training and board-and-train can—and cannot—do
In day training, a trainer works with your dog while you are occupied, either at your home or at the provider’s location. Board-and-train involves your dog staying at the provider’s kennel for an agreed period. Both arrangements can teach selected behaviors, but the trainer is not a substitute for your participation.

Before signing up, ask how you will be taught to cue, reward, and practice the behaviors yourself, what follow-up is included, and how the plan will work in your everyday setting. The ASPCA emphasizes that board-and-train is effective only when the trainer also teaches the owner how to maintain the new behavior. Without that handoff, your dog may not respond as expected once back in familiar surroundings.

- Interview more than one provider. Ask about methods, qualifications, experience with your dog’s needs, references, and how they measure progress. The ASPCA recommends interviewing prospective trainers and checking their approach and experience.
- Ask what happens in a session. Look for reward-based teaching, clear practice opportunities, and explanations you can use at home. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior modification and says aversive methods should not be used.
- Observe a class if you are considering one. Check whether dogs appear relaxed and engaged, whether the instructor offers individual guidance, and whether the teaching style works for you.
- Ask how the provider handles serious concerns. Find out whether they will work with your veterinarian or refer you to a qualified behavior professional. Trainers do not diagnose medical conditions; a physical problem can affect behavior.
- Be wary of guarantees and force-based recommendations. No format can ensure a particular behavior outcome. A promise of guaranteed results or advice to use physical force or aversive methods is a reason to look elsewhere.
AVSAB’s 2025 board statement says its 2021 Humane Dog Training Position Statement remains its current authoritative view. That statement supports reward-based methods for all canine training. In practice, rewards can include treats or toys; a clicker or a spoken marker can signal the behavior you want. A clicker is optional, not a substitute for sound instruction.

When to involve a veterinarian or behavior specialist
Seek individualized professional assessment if fear, aggression, anxiety, separation anxiety, phobias, or compulsive behavior causes significant distress or puts people or animals at risk. Start by involving your veterinarian, who can assess whether a medical condition may contribute and help determine the appropriate next step. Veterinary behaviorists have specialty training and can prescribe medication when indicated.
For serious behavior concerns, management of the environment and behavior modification may both be needed; some cases also call for medication. The AVSAB position statements discuss this kind of integrated approach and the importance of considering medical factors. A sudden change in a previously reliable dog’s behavior also warrants veterinary advice rather than assuming it is simply a training problem.

A practical way to decide
- Basic cues or manners: Consider a group class if your dog can participate comfortably and you want structured practice.
- A puppy needing socialization: Consider a well-run puppy class after checking its health policies with your veterinarian.
- A behavior tied to home or requiring individual attention: Ask about private in-home help and the trainer’s experience with that issue.
- Limited time for direct training: Day training may help teach specified skills, but choose a provider who will coach you to maintain them.
- A stay-away program: Consider board-and-train only if you understand the methods and the provider includes owner instruction and follow-up.
- Serious distress, risk, or a sudden behavior change: Involve your veterinarian and seek a qualified behavior professional rather than relying on a routine class alone.
There is no established, source-backed number showing that one of these formats is universally more effective or faster. The better choice is the one that fits the behavior, provides safe and humane instruction, and teaches you how to continue the work with your dog.
