When your dog’s walk can wait a little, offer a small indoor activity that fits their appetite, confidence, mobility, and your space. Try hiding a few pieces of their regular food, setting up an easy puzzle, playing hide-and-seek if they know the cues, or practicing a familiar skill. These games can add interest to the morning; they are not established substitutes for every dog’s walk or exercise needs.

Choose an activity for your morning

These options are practical ways to give a dog something to explore or work on indoors. Setup and supervision needs vary, so choose what suits your dog and the room you have.

Activity Setup and space Food and supervision
Treat search or scent game Quick to set up; can work in a small space. Uses food; supervise and choose safe hiding places.
Hide-and-seek Needs room for an easy hiding spot and works best if the dog knows sit, stay, and come. Does not need food; stay involved and invite the dog to find you.
Food puzzle Use a puzzle toy or a simple household setup. Uses part of a meal or treats; supervise household-object games.
Brief training game Needs little space; practice familiar cues. Can use part of the dog’s regular food when appropriate.

How can I keep my dog busy indoors in the morning?

Hide a few treats for a search

Place a treat beneath one of several inverted containers and let your dog investigate, as described by the AKC’s indoor-games guidance. Start with an easy find and use containers that are safe for your dog. You can also hide food in a snuffle mat; the AKC notes that it can engage a dog’s smell and curiosity. Keep the search simple, especially if your dog is new to the game.

Try a small scent game

A scent game can be as simple as encouraging your dog to find a motivating item such as food. The AKC describes scent games for small living spaces, so you do not need a large room to try one. Begin with an obvious hiding place, then make the search more challenging only if your dog is enjoying it.

Set up a food puzzle

A food puzzle gives your dog a task as they work to reach food or treats. VCA describes food puzzles as a way to provide novel feeding and mental engagement, and the AKC explains how puzzle toys make dogs work to access food. Start with an easy puzzle your dog can understand. A purchased toy is optional: the goal is a manageable food-finding task, not a particular product.

Roll kibble into a towel

VCA suggests spreading kibble across a towel and rolling it so a pet can unravel it. VCA specifically says to supervise this towel game. Use a towel and setup appropriate for your dog, and stop if they chew or swallow fabric rather than searching for the food.

Choose a sturdy tray and balls that are safe for your individual dog, and supervise throughout; do not use objects they could chew apart or swallow. See the AKC’s muffin-tin game directions.

What can I do with my dog inside before our walk?

Play hide-and-seek if your dog knows the cues

Hide somewhere easy to find and invite your dog to come to you. The AKC says this game works best when a dog understands cues such as sit, stay, and come. If those cues are unfamiliar, choose a food search or a short practice session instead of making the game harder. The AKC’s indoor-games page gives guidance on getting started.

Use food and household items thoughtfully

When it suits your dog, use part of their regular food for a search, puzzle, or training game rather than adding extra treats. VCA recommends discussing enrichment foods with your veterinarian and lists chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, caffeine, alcohol, and xylitol among substances to avoid. If your dog has dietary restrictions, a medical condition, swallowing risks, or you are unsure what is appropriate, ask your veterinarian before introducing food or a new setup. See VCA’s food-puzzle guidance.

Know what indoor enrichment can—and cannot—do

A search, puzzle, or training game can give your dog an interesting task while you are still at home. The cited AKC and VCA guidance does not establish that indoor enrichment replaces every dog’s outdoor walk or exercise needs. Treat it as an option for this morning, then decide about the walk based on your dog and your usual routine.
