An Irish Doodle is an Irish Setter–Poodle cross, not a standardized breed with predictable traits. Adult size, coat, shedding, and temperament can vary, especially depending on the Poodle parent’s size and the individual dog. Expect a potentially energetic, intelligent companion that needs daily activity, training, companionship, and substantial coat care.

Before choosing one, meet the individual dog and ask for actual health-test records for both parents. Neither a generation label nor a breeder-association membership guarantees a particular coat, allergy response, size, or health outcome.

What is an Irish Doodle?

An Irish Doodle is a mixed-breed dog produced by crossing an Irish Setter with a Poodle. The Poodle may be Standard or Miniature; the Irish Doodle Association describes its usual cross as a Standard Poodle and Irish Setter, while PetMD also includes Miniature Poodle crosses.

The Irish Doodle is not officially recognized as a standardized breed and has no universally accepted breed standard. That means descriptions of adult size, coat, shedding, appearance, and temperament are tendencies, not guarantees.

Generation labels describe ancestry, not certain outcomes. The Irish Doodle Association describes an F1 as a first-generation cross of a purebred Poodle and Irish Setter, and an F1b as an F1 backcrossed to a purebred, typically a Poodle. F2 and later generations may be more variable. None of these labels guarantees coat type, shedding, allergy response, or health.

The Irish Setter parent may contribute athleticism, stamina, enthusiasm, and hunting instincts. The Poodle parent may contribute intelligence, trainability, and a dense curly-to-wavy coat. Individual dogs can inherit different combinations of traits.

Irish Doodle characteristics at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Breed type Irish Setter–Poodle cross; not a standardized breed
Typical temperament Often affectionate, energetic, playful, and friendly, but individual variation is substantial
Size Varies; the Poodle variety and actual parent sizes matter
Coat May be wavy or curly; texture, color, and shedding vary
Shedding May be lower with a Poodle-influenced coat, but is not guaranteed
Grooming Potentially demanding; long coats may need daily brushing and combing
Exercise Needs daily physical activity, mental enrichment, and companionship
Best suited to Owners prepared for activity, training, attention, and coat care
Potential mismatch Anyone requiring guaranteed size, hypoallergenic qualities, or minimal grooming

How big do Irish Doodles get?

Size depends substantially on the Poodle parent and the individual pairing. PetMD gives broad parent-breed ranges of 60–70 pounds for Irish Setters, 10–15 pounds for Miniature Poodles, and 40–70 pounds for Standard Poodles. PetMD estimates many full-grown Irish Doodles at about 50–70 pounds and Mini Irish Doodles at closer to half that size. These are estimates, not a breed standard or a guarantee for an individual dog.

Ask about the actual parents rather than relying on labels such as “mini,” “medium,” or “standard,” which breeders may use inconsistently. Ask for their adult size and the size of previous offspring from the same or closely related pairings, if available. A puppy’s current size cannot guarantee its adult size. If a particular size is essential, an adult dog with a known history may offer more certainty than a puppy.

Coat, colors, and shedding

Irish Doodle coats may be wavy or curly, and can vary in texture and density—even within one litter. A more Poodle-influenced coat may shed less visibly than a traditional Irish Setter coat, but reduced shedding does not mean no shedding, and it does not make a dog hypoallergenic. PetMD notes that no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergy-sensitive households should spend time with the specific dog before committing, while recognizing that individual reactions vary.

Irish Doodle temperament and household fit

PetMD describes Irish Doodles as often affectionate, energetic, playful, and friendly. The mix may enjoy retrieving, learning, outdoor activity, and close human companionship, but these are tendencies rather than guarantees. Irish Setters are high-energy dogs, and the Irish Setter Club of America notes that they may follow their noses.

An Irish Doodle may be a better fit for an active household than for someone seeking a quiet, independent companion. PetMD gives around an hour of exercise a day as a general estimate, but individual needs vary with age, health, and temperament. Walks, training, play, hiking, or agility can provide outlets. Outdoors, use a leash or a secure fenced area.

Insufficient activity, training, or interaction can contribute to nuisance behaviors such as jumping, attention-seeking, destructive chewing, excessive barking, or difficulty settling. Clear boundaries, predictable routines, reward-based training, and appropriate management are more useful than harsh handling.

Irish Doodles and children

An Irish Doodle may live successfully with children, but the mix’s name is not a safety guarantee. A boisterous, energetic dog can accidentally knock over a small child. Standard Irish Doodles may also need more space. Consider the individual dog, supervision, exercise needs, and available space rather than assuming every dog is a perfect family pet or unsuitable for a particular home.

  • Supervise every interaction between children and the dog.
  • Teach children not to climb on, tightly hug, chase, or disturb the dog.
  • Give the dog a quiet retreat that children cannot enter.
  • Manage high-energy games before the dog becomes overexcited.
  • Never leave a young child and a dog together without active adult supervision.

Exercise and mental enrichment

Plan for daily physical activity, mental work, and companionship. Useful activities can include:

  • Walks with time to sniff
  • Retrieving games
  • Hiking on appropriate terrain
  • Obedience or agility activities
  • Scent games and food puzzles
  • Reward-based training and supervised enrichment toys

Exercise needs depend on age, health, weather, conditioning, and individual temperament. Puppies need age-appropriate movement, play, rest, and exploration rather than forced endurance. Ask your veterinarian how to manage activity during growth.

Training an Irish Doodle

Start training when the puppy comes home, using rewards such as food, play, praise, and access to valued activities. The Poodle parent’s trainability can be an advantage, while the Irish Setter’s enthusiasm may call for consistent work on impulse control and focus.

  • PACKAGE INCLUDES: Comes with 1 * dog collar, 1 * 6FT dog leash, 1 * dog poop bag dispenser and 1 * roll of poop bags, it will be a great gift for your furry friends

Early priorities include:

  1. Name recognition: reward the dog for looking at you when called.
  2. Recall: build a reliable “come” cue gradually.
  3. Loose-leash walking: reward a slack leash rather than pulling.
  4. Calm greetings: reinforce four paws on the floor.
  5. Handling: pair touching the ears, paws, face, and coat with rewards.
  6. Grooming cooperation: introduce brushes, combs, dryers, and nail care in small, positive steps.
  7. Settling: teach the dog to relax on a mat or in a safe confinement area.

Short, frequent sessions and consistent management help prevent behaviors the dog should not rehearse.

Socialization

Socialization means controlled, positive exposure—not forcing the puppy to greet everyone. Gradually introduce the puppy to people, sounds, transportation, veterinary handling, grooming equipment, household activity, and healthy, well-managed dogs. If the puppy seems overwhelmed, increase distance and make the experience easier.

Irish Doodle grooming requirements

A long, wavy, or curly coat can mat, particularly behind the ears, beneath the collar, in the armpits, around the legs, and between the toes. PetMD recommends brushing and combing ideally every day to help prevent mats.

A practical brushing routine

  1. Work in small sections and part the coat so you can see the skin.
  2. Brush gradually from the skin outward.
  3. Follow with a metal comb, checking that it passes through to the skin without catching.
  4. Pay particular attention to friction areas and places that become damp.

A slicker brush and metal comb are useful tools. Professional grooming or a shorter cut can make home care easier, but does not eliminate coat maintenance. The appropriate appointment interval depends on the dog’s coat and lifestyle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not cut tight mats with household scissors; skin can be pulled into a mat and accidentally cut. Ask a professional groomer or veterinarian for help. Ask your veterinarian about bathing frequency; overly frequent bathing may dry or irritate the skin. Routine care should also include nail trimming, dental care, and skin checks.

Irish Doodle health concerns

A crossbreed label does not guarantee health or eliminate inherited risks. PetMD discusses bloat or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), hip dysplasia, idiopathic epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), hypothyroidism, and von Willebrand disease in connection with Irish Doodles or their parent breeds. These are conditions to understand and discuss with a veterinarian, not inevitable outcomes or confirmed prevalence in Irish Doodles.

  • REFLECTIVITY: Highly reflective threads keep high visibility at night for safety
  • BONUS DOG LEASH: A free 5ft dog leash is included. Featured with comfortable foam handle, strong climbing rope, and tangle-free hook

Bloat is an emergency

PetMD lists unproductive retching, a swollen abdomen, sudden restlessness, panting or drooling, and collapse among possible warning signs of GDV. If you suspect bloat, seek veterinary care immediately. Do not wait to see whether symptoms resolve or attempt home treatment. Discuss individual risk and preventive options with your veterinarian.

Health testing to request from a breeder

Ask for actual health-test records for both parents and discuss which tests apply with a veterinarian or relevant testing organization. The Irish Doodle Association says its breeder members provide genetic testing and OFA certification or PennHIP results; these are the association’s stated membership requirements, not proof that a particular dog is healthy or free of every condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request the parents’ identification, test certificates, dates, and explanation of what each result does and does not assess. The association notes that OFA certification cannot be completed until dogs are at least 24 months old. A crossbreed label or association membership alone is not a health guarantee.

Feeding and routine veterinary care

Feed a complete and balanced diet suited to the dog’s life stage, expected size, activity, and body condition. Your veterinarian can help select a diet and monitor growth and weight. Routine preventive care should include vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental assessment, and age-appropriate screening.

  • Change foods gradually to reduce digestive upset.
  • Include treats in the dog’s daily calorie plan.
  • Monitor weight and body condition rather than relying only on package guidance.
  • Provide fresh water and discuss exercise, meal timing, and bloat risk with your veterinarian.

What to buy before bringing an Irish Doodle home

Prepare for the dog’s actual needs rather than buying based on promises about adult size or coat. A practical starter list includes:

  • An appropriately sized crate, pen, or safe confinement area
  • Collar, identification, leash, and secure harness
  • Food and water bowls
  • Age-appropriate chew items and supervised enrichment toys
  • Coat-care tools suited to the puppy’s current texture
  • Nail-care supplies or a plan for professional trimming
  • A toothbrush and dog-safe dental-care products
  • A washable bed and quiet retreat

How to choose an Irish Doodle responsibly

A responsible breeder should discuss breeding goals, parent temperament, health history, testing limitations, puppy socialization, veterinary records, contracts, return policies, and lifetime support. Be skeptical of claims that every Irish Doodle is non-shedding, hypoallergenic, healthier than every purebred dog, guaranteed to reach a particular size, or certain to have a specific personality.

Questions worth asking

  • Why were these two dogs paired?
  • What are the parents’ adult sizes and temperaments?
  • Which health tests were completed for each parent, and can I see the records?
  • What conditions remain possible despite testing?
  • How have the puppies been exposed to handling, grooming, household sounds, people, and safe environments?
  • What veterinary care and records accompany the puppy?
  • Will you take the dog back or help rehome it if I can no longer keep it?

Is an Irish Doodle right for you?

An Irish Doodle may suit an owner who can provide daily activity, training, companionship, and frequent coat care, and who accepts uncertainty in size, shedding, and temperament. Consider another dog if you need guaranteed adult size, minimal grooming, a reliably hypoallergenic pet, or a low-energy dog that can be left unstimulated for long periods.

FAQ

What is the temperament of an Irish Doodle?

PetMD describes Irish Doodles as often affectionate, energetic, playful, and friendly. Individual temperament varies, so meet the dog and consider its parent lines and needs.

How big do Irish Doodles get?

PetMD estimates many full-grown Irish Doodles at about 50–70 pounds and Mini Irish Doodles at closer to half that size. These are broad estimates, not guarantees; Poodle variety and parent sizes matter.

Are Irish Doodles hypoallergenic?

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. An Irish Doodle may shed less with a Poodle-influenced coat, but individual shedding and allergy responses vary. Spend time with the specific dog before committing.

What is the difference between a Goldendoodle and an Irish Doodle?

A Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever–Poodle cross; an Irish Doodle is an Irish Setter–Poodle cross. Both are mixed crosses rather than standardized breeds, and their size, coat, shedding, and temperament can vary.

How much grooming does an Irish Doodle need?

A long, wavy, or curly coat may need daily brushing and combing to help prevent mats. Professional grooming or a shorter cut can make home care easier, but does not remove the need for coat care.

What health tests should I ask an Irish Doodle breeder about?

Request the actual parent health-test records and discuss relevant tests with a veterinarian or testing organization. The Irish Doodle Association says its breeder members provide genetic testing and OFA certification or PennHIP results; membership does not guarantee an individual dog’s health.

The Bottom Line

An Irish Doodle may be a rewarding companion for an active owner prepared for daily enrichment, training, companionship, and substantial coat care. The cross does not guarantee a particular size, coat, shedding level, or temperament. Evaluate the individual dog, its parent lines, and actual health records before committing.
