Do not use a consumer massage gun on your pet unless a veterinarian has assessed the animal and specifically instructed you how to proceed. Veterinary sources discuss manual massage as one possible rehabilitation technique, but they do not establish that human percussive massage guns are safe for pets. If your pet is sore, limping, recovering from surgery, or has a health condition, ask the veterinary team for an appropriate plan instead of trying the device.
Why a massage gun is different from veterinary massage
Massage guns deliver repeated percussion through a device. Veterinary rehabilitation guidance discusses massage and other manual techniques, but that general guidance is not a safety protocol for consumer percussion devices. Device-specific safety is not established in the veterinary guidance reviewed here, so advice about trained manual massage should not be treated as permission to use a gun.

Veterinary massage may be considered as part of rehabilitation for some animals. VCA says rehabilitation massage should follow a veterinary examination and complete diagnosis, with the pet’s veterinarian involved in the care plan. The American Animal Hospital Association also includes rehabilitation among possible components of comprehensive pain management, while noting that controlled prospective clinical trials in veterinary rehabilitation are limited. Neither statement demonstrates that massage guns relieve pain or are safe for pets.

Massage technique and force matter. VCA warns that incorrectly performed massage can increase pain or muscle spasm and cause secondary injury. Merck Veterinary Manual cautions that excessive pressure can injure organs, blood vessels, neural tissue, or bones. These warnings concern manual therapy generally; they do not quantify the risk of a particular device, but they are a reason not to improvise a percussion treatment.

As a conservative precaution, do not apply a consumer massage gun to a pet’s spine, abdomen, head, neck, joints, bones, wounds, or any painful or inflamed area. The veterinary references do not provide a safe setting, duration, pressure, or frequency for using such a device on an animal.
When massage may be unsuitable
Veterinary sources identify conditions that can make massage inappropriate or require careful professional judgment. VCA says massage must not be performed over open or infected wounds, torn muscles, or joints affected by inflammatory arthritis, or when an animal has a fever or bleeding disorder. Merck advises against soft-tissue techniques directly over infection, acute inflammation, tumors, recent surgical sites or incisions, and thromboses; it also identifies fractures, burns, deep vein thromboses, and cancer as concerns.

This is not an exhaustive, massage-gun-specific contraindication list. A pet with a known condition, recent operation, fragile health, or unexplained pain needs veterinary advice before any massage. Merck notes that treatment for fragile or ill patients may need to be briefer and gentler, which is a decision for the clinician rather than a home device setting.

- Contact your veterinarian. Describe the symptom, when it began, and any injury, surgery, or diagnosed condition. A veterinary examination can identify whether massage is suitable or whether another cause needs treatment.
- Ask whether rehabilitation is appropriate. If it is, have the veterinary team explain the method, who should perform it, and how it fits with the pet’s diagnosis and medical history.
- Use only an approved technique. Gentle hand contact or treatment by a trained veterinary rehabilitation professional may be options only if the veterinary team recommends them and demonstrates what is appropriate for your animal.
- Stop if your pet seems uncomfortable. Move away, tensing, vocalizing, growling, or attempting to bite are reasons to stop contact and seek guidance rather than continue.
VCA notes that rehabilitation can cause harm when delivered without appropriate training or knowledge of the animal’s full medical history. Coordinate with the regular veterinarian, especially when another professional is providing treatment.

| Has safety for pets been established? | Not established in the veterinary guidance reviewed here. | Massage is discussed as a possible rehabilitation modality; suitability depends on the animal and clinical plan. |
| Who determines whether it is appropriate? | No pet-specific protocol is established in the reviewed sources; do not use without explicit veterinary direction. | The veterinarian should examine and diagnose the animal and coordinate care. |
| How is technique selected? | No safe setting, pressure, duration, or frequency is established for pets. | A trained professional selects and performs techniques appropriate to the animal’s condition. |
| How are contraindications handled? | A consumer device does not establish whether a pet’s health conditions make treatment unsuitable. | The clinician can account for wounds, inflammation, surgery, and other medical risks. |
| What does the evidence show? | The reviewed sources do not establish massage-gun safety or effectiveness for pets. | Veterinary rehabilitation is used in care, but controlled clinical evidence is limited. |
What veterinary sources say about the evidence
VCA says the success of veterinary massage can be difficult to measure and that controlled clinical trials are lacking. AAHA’s 2022 pain-management guidelines likewise describe a dearth of controlled prospective trials while saying rehabilitation should be considered within comprehensive care for animals affected by acute or chronic pain. These limitations concern the broader rehabilitation field; they are not trials of massage guns and should not be read as proof of device safety or benefit.
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s February 25, 2026 position on integrative veterinary medicine says these therapies should meet comparable safety and efficacy standards and take place within a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship. That reinforces the practical point: treatment choices belong in an individualized veterinary plan.
