Is Rosemary Safe for Dogs? What Owners Need to Know

The rosemary herb is generally non-toxic to dogs, but concentrated essential oil, diffuser liquid, and mixed products require much more caution. Learn the differences and what to do after exposure.

Yes—ordinary fresh or dried rosemary is generally considered non-toxic to dogs. The ASPCA lists rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. However, that does not make rosemary essential oil, diffuser liquid, fragrance products, supplements, or every rosemary-containing product safe. Concentrated oils can be absorbed if swallowed, inhaled, or placed on the skin.

The key distinction is the form of rosemary involved: a small amount of the culinary herb is a very different exposure from a bottle of essential oil or a mixed household product.

Is rosemary poisonous to dogs?

Plain rosemary—the fresh or dried culinary herb—is not generally considered poisonous to dogs. The ASPCA’s toxic-and-non-toxic plant database identifies rosemary, scientifically known as Rosmarinus officinalis, as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.

That classification does not provide a universal safe dose for every dog. A large amount of plant material, heavily seasoned food, or a product containing other ingredients can still cause problems. Dogs may also develop ordinary digestive upset after eating unfamiliar plant material even when the plant is not classified as toxic.

So, if a dog nibbles a small amount of plain fresh or dried rosemary and is acting normally, rosemary-specific poisoning would generally be unlikely. The answer changes when the exposure involves a concentrated product.

Rosemary herb versus rosemary oil

Product or exposure General guidance
Fresh rosemary plant Listed as non-toxic to dogs by the ASPCA. Prevent excessive grazing and monitor for digestive upset.
Dried culinary rosemary A small amount is generally not expected to cause rosemary-specific poisoning, but seasoning blends and prepared foods may contain other risky ingredients.
Rosemary in commercial dog food Rosemary or rosemary extract may appear in formulated pet food, often in a flavoring-related context. This is not equivalent to giving a dog concentrated essential oil.
Rosemary essential oil Do not deliberately give it to a dog, apply it directly, or leave bottles within reach. Concentrated oils can be absorbed through the mouth, skin, and lungs.
Diffuser liquid or fragrance product Potentially hazardous if swallowed, spilled on the coat, or inhaled in a way that causes symptoms. The full product and concentration matter.

Can dogs eat fresh or dried rosemary?

A small amount of plain culinary rosemary is generally considered low concern because the plant is listed as non-toxic. It is not necessary to add rosemary to a dog’s diet, however, and deliberately feeding large amounts is not advisable.

Pay attention to what the rosemary came with. A dog may be exposed to more than rosemary when it eats:

  • seasoned meat, stuffing, sauces, or leftovers;
  • herb-and-spice blends;
  • supplements or herbal products;
  • cosmetics or grooming products;
  • potpourri, fragrance products, or diffuser liquid.

Other ingredients may be more important than the rosemary. Depending on the food or product, possible concerns can include excessive fat, salt, onions, garlic, certain sweeteners, medications, or other essential oils. Keep the packaging or ingredient label if you need to speak with a veterinarian.

What about rosemary extract in dog food?

Rosemary or rosemary extract can appear on commercial pet-food ingredient lists. FDA materials discussing dog and cat food formulations describe rosemary extract use consistent with a flavoring function, and commercial veterinary diet ingredient lists may include it.

This is an important formulation distinction. A small, controlled amount of an ingredient in a complete commercial food is not the same exposure as swallowing undiluted rosemary essential oil. If your dog eats its regular food containing rosemary extract, follow the product’s feeding directions and contact your veterinarian if the dog develops symptoms or if the food itself was consumed in an unusually large amount.

Why rosemary essential oil deserves more caution

Essential oils are highly concentrated products. They should not be treated as interchangeable with the herb from which they are derived.

Pet Poison Helpline explains that essential oils can be rapidly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, skin, and lungs. Risk varies according to the particular oil and its concentration. Depending on the exposure, signs can involve the digestive, respiratory, or nervous systems, among others.

Do not:

  • put rosemary essential oil directly on your dog’s skin, coat, paws, or nose;
  • add it to drinking water or food;
  • use it as a homemade flea or tick treatment;
  • allow a dog to lick an oil-treated surface or person;
  • leave an oil bottle, open diffuser reservoir, or scented product where the dog can reach it.

Active diffusers can create a further exposure route. Oil droplets may settle on a dog’s coat and later be swallowed during grooming. A dog can also knock over and ingest the reservoir liquid. VCA warns that scented oils and fragrance products can be dangerous when consumed or when vapors cause a reaction.

Signs to watch for after exposure

After a small amount of plain rosemary, monitor your dog for vomiting, diarrhea, unusual tiredness, or other changes. These signs can have many causes and do not prove rosemary poisoning, but they warrant veterinary advice if they are persistent, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms.

After an essential-oil, diffuser, fragrance, or unknown-product exposure, watch for signs such as:

  • vomiting or diarrhea;
  • drooling or difficulty swallowing;
  • coughing, wheezing, or other breathing changes;
  • weakness, unusual sleepiness, agitation, tremors, or incoordination;
  • skin irritation after contact;
  • seizures, collapse, or unresponsiveness.

The precise signs and their severity depend on the product, amount, route of exposure, and the dog’s size and health. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before asking for advice when the product is concentrated or the amount is unknown.

What to do if your dog ate rosemary

If it was a small amount of plain herb

  1. Remove the remaining rosemary and check whether it was plain herb or part of a seasoned food.
  2. Keep the packaging or recipe details if available.
  3. Observe your dog and provide normal access to fresh water.
  4. Call your veterinarian if vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, breathing problems, or any other concerning sign develops.

A dog that ate a small amount of fresh or dried rosemary and is behaving normally is generally less concerning than a dog that swallowed an oil or mixed product.

If it was essential oil, diffuser liquid, fragrance, or an unknown product

  1. Move your dog away from the product and prevent further licking or contact.
  2. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison specialist specifically tells you to do so. Vomiting can increase the risk of additional irritation or aspiration with some products.
  3. Call your veterinarian or a poison-control service promptly, even if your dog looks normal.
  4. Have the product container ready. Note the product name, ingredients, concentration if listed, estimated amount, time of exposure, and whether it was swallowed, inhaled, or spilled on the skin or coat.
  5. Provide your dog’s age, weight, breed, medical conditions, and current medications.

In the United States, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center can be reached at (888) 426-4435. The ASPCA says its poison-control service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Fees or availability may vary, so owners elsewhere should use their veterinarian or local animal-poison service.

Go directly to an emergency veterinary clinic for trouble breathing, seizures, unconsciousness, severe bleeding, collapse, or failure to respond. ASPCA advises seeking help promptly after a potentially hazardous ingestion rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

Can rosemary repel fleas or treat a dog’s illness?

Do not assume that a non-toxic plant is a safe or effective medical treatment. The fact that culinary rosemary is listed as non-toxic does not establish that rosemary oil safely repels fleas, treats skin disease, improves health, or replaces a veterinary medicine.

Spice Magic Dried Rosemary Leaves,Culinary Herb Cooking & Herbal Tea,3 oz
  • ROAST COMPANION: Toss with potatoes, chicken, lamb and root vegetables.
  • BREAD & OIL: Knead into focaccia or steep in olive oil for dipping.
  • MARINADE BACKBONE: Pairs with garlic and lemon for grilled meats and fish.
  • CLEAN NEEDLES: Leaf-only cut, no woody stems, easy to measure.
  • SEALED-FRESH POUCH: Resealable, light-blocking bag protects the piney oils.

In particular, do not apply homemade rosemary essential-oil mixtures to a dog. Concentration, application area, licking, inhalation, and the dog’s individual health all affect risk. Ask your veterinarian for an evidence-based flea, tick, or skin-care plan instead.

How to keep rosemary and related products safely

  • Keep essential oils, diffuser liquids, and fragrance products in closed storage that your dog cannot access.
  • Do not leave cut rosemary, herb blends, or seasoned leftovers on counters if your dog scavenges.
  • Check every ingredient in supplements, sauces, cosmetics, and household products rather than judging them by the word “rosemary.”
  • Use extra care around dogs that have respiratory disease or are especially sensitive to fragrances.
  • When gardening, prevent excessive chewing of any plant and identify plants accurately; “non-toxic” does not mean every plant is appropriate to eat in unlimited amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my dog ate a rosemary sprig?

A small amount of plain fresh rosemary is generally considered non-toxic to dogs. Remove the remaining plant, monitor for digestive upset, and contact your veterinarian if symptoms appear or if your dog ate a large or unknown amount.

Is rosemary essential oil safe for dogs?

Do not give rosemary essential oil to a dog or apply it directly to the skin or coat. Concentrated essential oils can be absorbed through ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation, and diffuser liquid can be dangerous if swallowed or transferred to the coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can rosemary be in dog food?

Yes. Rosemary or rosemary extract may appear in commercial dog-food ingredient lists. A formulated amount in complete commercial food is not the same as exposure to undiluted essential oil, but any unusual reaction should be discussed with a veterinarian.

Should I make my dog vomit after it eats rosemary oil?

No—not unless a veterinarian or poison specialist specifically directs you to do so. With some oils and chemical products, vomiting can increase irritation or the risk of aspiration.

When is rosemary exposure an emergency?

Seek emergency veterinary care for breathing trouble, seizures, collapse, unconsciousness, severe bleeding, or failure to respond. For any essential-oil, diffuser, fragrance, or unknown-product ingestion, contact a veterinarian or poison-control service promptly even if signs have not started.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Plain fresh or dried rosemary is generally listed as non-toxic to dogs, and a small accidental nibble is usually much less concerning than exposure to a concentrated product. Keep rosemary essential oil, diffuser liquids, fragrances, and mixed products away from dogs; if one is swallowed or gets on the coat, contact a veterinarian or poison-control service promptly and do not induce vomiting without professional instructions.
