In February 2024, Canning mayor Patrick Hall criticized the Cannington Greyhounds venue after four dogs died or were euthanised following injuries over a short period. Hall called the deaths “horrendous” and argued the track could not continue in its then-current form. Canning council later voted to ask the state government for an immediate suspension and investigation; the vote did not close the track or ban racing.
What happened to the four greyhounds?
PerthNow reported that three greyhounds died or were euthanised after incidents on 27 and 29 January 2024, followed by another dog’s death after Hall’s social-media post. The four cases were spread across several days, not one race.
- Columbus Monelli died from a broken neck and severe head trauma.
- Cash Landing was euthanised after a truncal-spinal fracture.
- Cameron Keeping was euthanised after a fractured right hock.
- Shady Town was injured and euthanised on 5 February.
The report describes the first three incidents as occurring on 27 and 29 January. It does not establish that all four dogs were injured in the same race or on the same night. PerthNow’s 8 February 2024 report is the source for the case details.
Why did the Canning mayor criticize the track?
Hall, who had previously been chief executive of the Shenton Park Dogs’ Refuge Home, said he did not support having the track in his district. Responding to the deaths, he told PerthNow, “It is just horrendous.” He also said, “I don’t think it can continue in its present form.” Hall wanted the council to put a request for a track review in writing to the state government.

Did Canning council close the track?
No. The council could advocate to the state government, but it did not have the power to ban greyhound racing through this motion. PerthNow reported that councillors voted 10–1 to support a letter to Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia seeking an immediate suspension and investigation. Hall acknowledged that banning the sport was outside the local government’s remit. The motion was a request to state authorities, not an order closing the venue. PerthNow’s follow-up on the council vote reported the result.
What did racing officials say about track safety?
In the February 2024 report, Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA) chief racing integrity officer Denis Borovica said stewards had not identified a track issue in the three incidents of 27 and 29 January and that no remedial actions were required based on those incidents. Borovica also told PerthNow, “A race will not go ahead if there are any concerns with the track.” That is RWWA’s stated position as reported at the time, not an independently verified guarantee about track safety.
A state government spokesperson told PerthNow that licensed participants were subject to the Animal Welfare Act and racing codes of conduct, and said the government was committed to working with stakeholders on animal-welfare outcomes.
What changes were made to Cannington after the 2024 deaths?
In August 2024, the City of Canning said advocacy had contributed to substantial improvements and described a $3 million upgrade. The city said the track would be temporarily closed for works until October. Its account included track adjustments and resurfacing, new starting boxes, new rail and posts, and an enlarged catching pen. The City of Canning’s August 2024 update described the project. PerthNow also reported that the work included a new irrigation system and that race meets moved to Northam and Mandurah during the closure: its 9 August 2024 report.

The reported upgrades document changes to the venue; they do not, by themselves, establish that future injuries were eliminated.
What happened at Cannington in January 2026?
ABC News reported that four dogs were injured during a Cannington meet on 28 January 2026, two were euthanised, and racing was abandoned after race seven of the scheduled 12. RWWA said officials were reviewing the incidents before racing or trialling continued. Its spokesperson told ABC: “Racing WA officials are currently conducting a comprehensive review of these incidents and assessing all available data prior to the continuation of any further racing or trialling at Cannington.” This describes the position in ABC’s 30 January 2026 report, not the inquiry’s eventual outcome.
