Reports say he got off his motorcycle and photographed a female bear with cubs, but that account is attributed to media reports citing forestry officials, not an independently established investigative finding. Reports also differ on the depth of the ravine where his body was recovered.
What happened on the Transfăgărășan
TVR reported that a group of Italian motorcyclists travelling from Vidraru toward Bâlea Lac stopped by the roadside on 3 July 2025. A bear attacked one member of the group, who was later found dead in a ravine in the Posada–Vidraru area.
TVR, citing forestry representative Dragoș Ionescu, reported that the motorcyclist stopped, got off his motorcycle and took successive photographs while a female bear was with her cubs. Radio România Actualități also reported that he left his motorcycle to photograph a female bear with three cubs, describing the details as information then available. These accounts support saying that reports say he took photos; they do not establish his motive or provide a complete independent reconstruction of the encounter.
TVR also reported that footage from the preceding day showed the rider near bears and included the words “Vine direct spre mine!” (“It’s coming straight at me!”). This is a phrase reported from the video, not a direct interview.

Reports differ on the ravine depth
The sources agree that the victim was recovered from a ravine, but their reported depth estimates differ. TVR’s 3 July report gave 60 metres; AGERPRES, quoting Salvamont Argeș chief Ion Sănduloiu, gave 70–80 metres. Digi24 reported that the victim was found close to the water and recovered with a boat.

What the local bear count means
AGERPRES reported that the Arefu Hunting Ground No. 5, managed by the Argeș Forestry Directorate, had 112 bears against an estimated optimal number of 25. The comparison came from an official assessment conducted in spring 2025. It is a reported figure for that particular management area, not a count of Romania’s entire bear population.

The safety lesson for travelers
The narrow lesson supported by these reports is to avoid approaching wildlife for photographs. Do not get off a motorcycle or leave a vehicle to move closer to a bear; observe from a distance and follow local instructions. These incident reports do not establish a full bear-encounter protocol or support treating any equipment as protection.

What does the figure of 112 bears refer to?
AGERPRES reported that an official spring 2025 assessment counted 112 bears in the Arefu Hunting Ground No. 5, against an estimated optimal number of 25. It is a local management-area figure, not a nationwide count.
What should travelers do if they see a bear near a road?
Do not approach it or leave a vehicle to take a closer photograph. Keep your distance and follow local instructions.
