The Japanese Spitz is a small-to-medium companion dog from Japan, known for its pure-white coat, pointed ears, black eyes and fox-like expression. It is lively, intelligent and affectionate, but it is not silent, hypoallergenic or maintenance-free.

This breed can suit an active household that wants an engaged companion and is prepared for regular brushing, shedding, dental care and training. Before choosing one, it is also worth checking health documentation rather than relying on claims that Japanese Spitz dogs are problem-free.

History of the Japanese Spitz

Further white Spitz dogs were imported from Canada, the United States, Australia and China. Two pairs arrived from Canada in 1925, and imports continued until approximately 1936. After the Second World War, the Japan Kennel Club established a unified breed standard in 1948.

This history describes the development of the modern breed; it does not prove a single, fully documented foundation line. The FCI wording says the breed’s origin is “said to be” the large white German Spitz.

The Japanese Spitz should also be distinguished from Japan’s indigenous hunting breeds, including the Shiba Inu, Shikoku, Kai Ken, Kishu Ken, Hokkaido and Akita. It is a modern Japanese companion breed rather than an ancient native hunting dog.

Appearance and breed standard

The Japanese Spitz has the balanced, compact outline associated with Spitz breeds. The body is slightly longer than it is tall; the FCI gives a height-to-body-length ratio of 10:11. The dog has a pointed muzzle, small triangular ears and a high-set tail carried over the back.

Recognizable features include:

  • Pure-white coat
  • Small, round, black nose
  • Tight lips, preferably black
  • Dark, almond-shaped eyes with black rims
  • Small, erect, triangular ears
  • Strong white teeth with a scissor bite
  • Straight, short back and broad loin
  • Deep chest and tucked-up belly
  • Cat-like feet
  • Light, quick and active movement

The coat is made up of a straight, stand-off outer coat and a short, soft, dense undercoat. Furnishings are longer around the neck, shoulders, forechest and tail. The hair is shorter on the face, ears, front of the forearms and below the hocks.

How big is a Japanese Spitz?

Size descriptions differ slightly between kennel organizations:

Registry Males Females
FCI 30–38 cm Slightly smaller
Japan Kennel Club 30–38 cm Slightly smaller
Royal Kennel Club ideal 34–37 cm 30–34 cm
United Kennel Club 12–15 in 12–14 in

These are standards for an ideal show dog, not a guarantee for every pet. Individual Japanese Spitz dogs may be somewhat larger or smaller.

Japanese Spitz temperament

Breed standards describe the Japanese Spitz as intelligent, cheerful, alert, bold, lively, affectionate and companionable. The Royal Kennel Club notes that some may be slightly cautious when meeting strangers.

In practice, temperament is influenced by heredity, early socialization, training, health and the home environment. A Japanese Spitz may be affectionate with its family but alert around visitors or unfamiliar sounds. That combination can be useful for awareness but may become excessive barking if it is not managed.

Do Japanese Spitz dogs bark a lot?

They can. The FCI standard says excessive noisiness is not permitted, and the United Kennel Club says the breed should not be noisy. Those statements describe the desired temperament; they do not mean that every individual dog will be quiet.

Barking may be triggered by:

  • People approaching the home
  • Unfamiliar sounds
  • Other dogs
  • Excitement or frustration
  • Boredom
  • Fear or insufficient socialization
  • Distress when left alone

Reward-based training, teaching a reliable quiet cue and preventing repeated rehearsal of alert barking are more useful than dismissing the behavior as “just Spitz behavior.” Persistent or sudden barking can also justify a veterinary or behavior assessment.

Exercise and training needs

The Japanese Spitz is not merely a decorative lapdog. Its standard describes movement as active, energetic, nimble and smooth. Most individuals benefit from daily walks combined with play, training or another form of mental activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official breed-standard rule stating that every Japanese Spitz needs a particular number of walks or exact number of exercise minutes. Needs vary with age, health, fitness and personality. A sensible routine may include:

  1. A daily opportunity to walk and investigate safely.
  2. Short obedience sessions using food rewards or toys.
  3. Interactive games such as retrieve or hide-and-seek.
  4. Scent activities that encourage calm concentration.
  5. Training for settling quietly indoors.

Early socialization should cover people, calm dogs, handling, grooming, transport, household noises and different surfaces. Introduce these experiences gradually and positively. Harsh corrections can increase fear, reactivity and defensive barking.

Grooming and shedding

The Japanese Spitz has a dense double coat and sheds. Loose hair is especially noticeable during heavier shedding periods, when regular brushing becomes more important. A pin brush or slicker brush combined with a suitable undercoat comb can help remove loose hair, but brushing should be gentle enough to avoid irritating the skin.

Owners should expect to provide:

  • Regular full-body brushing
  • More frequent grooming during coat changes
  • Bathing when the dog is genuinely dirty or has veterinary-directed skin-care needs
  • Thorough drying after bathing
  • Regular nail trims
  • Ear and eye checks
  • Routine dental care

The coat can release dried dirt relatively easily, which is why it is sometimes called “self-cleaning.” That does not mean it requires no care. Dirt, grease, mats and loose undercoat still need attention, and the dense coat must be dried properly so dampness does not remain close to the skin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you shave a Japanese Spitz?

Routine shaving is not recommended simply to reduce shedding or keep a white dog cooler. The double coat is part of the breed’s normal structure. Shaving can remove the protective outer layer, leave the skin more exposed to sun and irritants, and sometimes lead to uneven or delayed regrowth.

If the coat is severely matted or clipping is needed for a medical reason, ask a veterinarian or an experienced groomer for advice.

Japanese Spitz health

The breed is often described as healthy, but that should not be interpreted as “free from inherited disease.” Breed-specific population data are limited, and responsible owners should still take preventive care and breeder screening seriously.

Patellar luxation

Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap moves abnormally or slips out of its normal groove. It can be mild and intermittent or severe enough to cause ongoing lameness and require treatment. A veterinarian can assess the patella during a physical examination; there is no single DNA test that excludes every case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When buying a puppy, ask for documented patella evaluations for both parents where available. A verbal assurance that a line is “healthy” is not a substitute for records.

PRA-rcd4

A late-onset form of progressive retinal atrophy called PRA-rcd4 is an active area of Japanese Spitz health research and genetic testing. The Japanese Spitz Foundation reported 507 PRA-rcd4 DNA test results collected by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

This developing testing program does not mean every Japanese Spitz carries the mutation, and a negative result does not rule out every eye disorder. Ask breeders for the actual laboratory report, the test identity and the way the result was considered in the breeding plan.

Dental disease

Small dogs can be vulnerable to dental disease, and Japanese Spitz health references identify oral health as a practical concern. Daily tooth brushing with dog-safe toothpaste is the most useful home prevention. Veterinary dental examinations and professional cleaning may still be necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a puppy buyer ask for?

  • Veterinary examination records
  • Vaccination and parasite-treatment records
  • Patella evaluation information
  • Relevant eye examination or PRA-rcd4 documentation where testing is performed
  • Pedigree and registration records
  • Health information about parents, littermates and previous generations

The Royal Kennel Club’s current health-standard document lists no named Good Practice or Best Practice screening test beside the Japanese Spitz entry. That means the scheme does not currently specify a listed protocol; it does not mean the breed has no health risks.

How long does a Japanese Spitz live?

A precise, well-established Japanese-Spitz-specific average lifespan is not supported by the sources reviewed. Online claims that the breed “always lives 10–16 years” should therefore not be treated as a verified breed statistic.

A 2021 Japanese veterinary study calculated life expectancy at birth as 13.98 years for all dogs in its dataset, not specifically for Japanese Spitz. That figure cannot be used as the breed’s average lifespan.

Longevity depends on genetics, body condition, dental care, preventive veterinary treatment, accidents, reproductive status, environment and disease.

Food and weight management

There is no special Japanese-Spitz diet established by the breed standard. Feed a complete and balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage, and adjust portions according to body condition rather than relying only on the feeding chart.

The thick white coat can conceal weight gain. Regularly feel for the ribs and check that the dog has a visible waist and abdominal tuck. Keeping a dog lean is particularly important when joint problems such as patellar luxation are a concern.

Living with children and other pets

A well-socialized Japanese Spitz may live successfully with children, but the breed standard cannot guarantee that every individual will be tolerant or safe in every situation. Young children should always be supervised around dogs. Teach children not to chase, corner, hug, grab, disturb a sleeping dog or interfere with food.

Japanese Spitz dogs may also live with other dogs or pets, but compatibility depends on the individual dog, its previous experience and the quality of introductions. Use gradual, supervised meetings and provide separate spaces for eating, resting and retreating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Japanese Spitz hypoallergenic?

No. The Japanese Spitz is not a hypoallergenic breed. It has a dense double coat and sheds. Dog allergens come mainly from proteins in skin flakes, saliva and other body materials, not simply from visible hair.

Anyone with allergies should spend time with adult Japanese Spitz dogs before committing to ownership and should discuss symptoms with a medical professional. White fur may make shed hair easier to see, but coat color does not make a dog hypoallergenic.

Recognition and registration

The Japanese Spitz is definitively recognized by the FCI, which places it in Group 5, Section 5. The current FCI standard is dated June 16, 1999; it states that the official valid standard was published in 1987. The breed has been definitively recognized by the FCI since April 22, 1964.

In the United States, the breed is recorded in the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service. It is not a fully AKC-recognized breed and is not eligible for standard AKC breed registration. Eligible dogs may participate in certain AKC companion events, including obedience, tracking, agility and rally, under the applicable FSS requirements.

Common claims about Japanese Spitz dogs

Claim What the evidence supports
“It is an ancient native Japanese breed.” The modern breed was developed in Japan from imported white Spitz dogs beginning around 1920.
“It never barks.” Excessive noisiness is undesirable, but individual dogs can bark in response to alerting, fear, frustration or loneliness.
“The coat is self-cleaning, so grooming is unnecessary.” Dried dirt may fall away readily, but the double coat still sheds and needs regular brushing.
“It is hypoallergenic because it is white.” It sheds and produces ordinary dog allergens. White coloring does not change that.
“The breed has no health problems.” Patellar luxation, dental disease and inherited eye disease have been reported or investigated.
“It always lives 10–16 years.” A definitive breed-specific lifespan average has not been established by the reviewed sources.
“AKC listing means full AKC registration.” The Japanese Spitz is currently an AKC Foundation Stock Service breed, not a fully recognized AKC breed.

FAQ

Is a Japanese Spitz a good family dog?

It can be a good family companion when properly socialized and trained. Children must be supervised, and the individual dog’s temperament matters more than a general breed promise.

Are Japanese Spitz dogs easy to train?

They are intelligent and can respond well to reward-based training. Early work on barking, leash manners, jumping and settling is important.

How much does a Japanese Spitz shed?

It has a dense double coat and sheds regularly, with heavier periods when the undercoat is changing. Regular brushing is necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Japanese Spitz live in an apartment?

Potentially. Size alone is not the deciding factor: the dog still needs daily activity, mental stimulation and training to prevent boredom and nuisance barking.

Can you shave a Japanese Spitz?

Routine shaving is not advised. Ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer about clipping only when there is a medical or serious matting reason.

Is the Japanese Spitz recognized by the AKC?

It is listed in the AKC Foundation Stock Service and may be eligible for certain companion events, but it is not a fully AKC-recognized breed and is not eligible for standard AKC breed registration.

The Bottom Line

The Japanese Spitz is a lively, affectionate Japanese companion breed with a striking pure-white double coat. It can be an excellent fit for owners who enjoy training and daily interaction, but expect shedding, regular grooming, possible alert barking and ongoing dental care.

Choose a breeder who provides verifiable health information, particularly concerning patellas and relevant eye testing. The breed should not be sold as silent, hypoallergenic, self-cleaning or guaranteed free of disease.
