Jim Brakewood Jr., a veteran of two Iraq tours, says meeting Amora—a Staffordshire Bull Terrier who had just lost a rear leg—gave him a reason to stay alive. His story is a personal rescue-and-recovery account, not proof that a dog can treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or prevent suicide. Jim credits the bond, daily responsibility and companionship with helping him move away from suicidal thinking.
Important context: The account below comes from Jim’s published testimony in iHeartDogs (May 6, 2022) and a later version from The Hero Company (February 28, 2023). No medical record, military record or primary interview transcript is cited in those accounts.

What happened to Jim Brakewood Jr. before he met Amora?
The published accounts describe Jim as a veteran of two tours in Iraq. They say he was shot in the head in Mosul, received a Purple Heart and returned home with PTSD. He also described drinking, isolation, suicidal thoughts and symptoms he later associated with traumatic brain injury.
Jim said he reached a point at which he was considering whether to continue living. He decided that training a puppy might help him cope with PTSD, so he went to a humane society looking for a dog.

How did Jim meet the three-legged shelter dog?
At the shelter, Jim met Amora, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier recovering from a car accident. Her rear right leg could not be saved, and the account says veterinarians amputated it immediately before Jim’s visit. She was wearing a cone and had fresh stitches.
Jim recalled that Amora still tried to get up and greet him. He took her home, where the dog settled into his lap and fell asleep. That first interaction became the emotional center of his account: both dog and person were injured, yet Amora was still reaching toward a new relationship.

He said Amora kept him company and became his best friend. Feeding, caring for and spending time with a dependent animal can create structure, but Jim’s statements describe what happened for him—not a guaranteed outcome for every veteran or every dog owner.
Nothing in the published accounts establishes that Amora medically treated Jim’s PTSD, resolved his traumatic brain-injury symptoms or independently prevented suicide. The evidence presented is his first-person testimony about companionship, responsibility and the decision to remain alive for a dog who depended on him.
Was Amora a service animal or therapy dog?
No. Jim explicitly said Amora was not officially designated as a service animal or therapy dog, and that he had provided little formal training.

That distinction matters. A companion animal may offer comfort and routine without having the specialized training, professional assessment or official status associated with a service dog. Calling Amora a service animal would therefore misstate Jim’s account and could create confusion about access rights or expected behavior.
What happened to Amora later?
A later update reported that Amora died in a tragic accident. The same coverage says Jim continued rescuing pit bulls and later saved a dog named Logan after Amora’s death.
That continuation is significant because it shows the relationship did not end as a single inspirational moment. In the published account, Jim’s involvement with rescue dogs became an ongoing part of his life after losing Amora.

What can this story—and what can’t it—tell us about veterans and dogs?
Jim and Amora’s story can illustrate how a particular human-animal bond may provide companionship, routine and a reason to focus on another living being. It can also show why shelter dogs with disabilities should not be assumed to have no future: Amora’s amputation did not prevent her from forming a close attachment.

It cannot establish that adopting a dog cures PTSD, replaces counseling or medication, or guarantees suicide prevention. Outcomes vary with a person’s symptoms, support network, housing, finances, the animal’s needs and access to qualified mental-health care. A dog can also add responsibilities that someone in crisis may be unable to manage without help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should readers respond if a veteran is suicidal?
A moving rescue story should never be treated as a substitute for immediate safety support. If someone says they may harm themselves, stay with them when possible, remove access to weapons or other lethal means if it can be done safely, and contact local emergency services or a crisis line. Encourage professional care from a clinician familiar with trauma and veterans’ needs; do not make adopting an animal the sole safety plan.

If a veteran is not in immediate danger but is struggling, practical help—offering transportation to an appointment, helping with meals or pet care, or checking in consistently—can reduce isolation while they seek qualified support. The person’s wishes, safety and access to professional services should guide the plan.
What makes Amora’s rescue account unusual?
- She met Jim immediately after a major surgery, while wearing a cone and carrying fresh stitches.
- She had three legs because of an accident, yet the account centers on her attempt to stand and greet a stranger.
- The relationship was described as a companion bond, not a formally trained service or therapy placement.
- Jim later continued rescuing dogs, including Logan, after Amora’s death.
The often-repeated claim that pit-bull-type dogs make up 40% of 1.5 million shelter euthanasias each year is not supported by an identified organization or year in the published account. It should not be presented as a verified statistic.

Can a shelter dog legally be called a service animal without training?
No. A dog’s comforting presence does not by itself establish service-animal status or public-access rights. Those questions depend on the applicable disability law, the dog’s trained tasks and the specific jurisdiction; Jim’s account says Amora had no official designation.
Could caring for a dog be difficult for someone with PTSD?
Yes. Feeding, veterinary care, exercise and emergency costs can become overwhelming during a crisis. A realistic plan should include backup caregivers and professional mental-health support rather than assuming the animal alone will provide stability.
How can people help veterans and disabled shelter dogs responsibly?
Support established veteran mental-health services, reputable service-dog programs and transparent shelters. Before donating or volunteering, check the organization’s current eligibility rules, training standards, outcome reporting and local availability.
What should I do if I am worried about a veteran tonight?
Ask directly whether the person is thinking about suicide, listen without arguing and help connect them with immediate professional or emergency support. Do not leave them alone if danger appears imminent, and do not rely on a pet adoption as an emergency intervention.
