The best food for a dog with arthritis depends on the dog’s weight, life stage, diagnosis, and other health conditions. Keeping a dog lean is central to joint care; for some dogs, a veterinarian may also recommend a therapeutic mobility diet with a suitable amount of omega-3 fatty acids. No food cures osteoarthritis, and nutrition works best as part of a broader veterinary care plan.
How to choose food for a dog with joint problems
Start with your dog’s body condition and calorie needs, not a “joint support” claim on the package. Excess weight increases mechanical stress on joints and can contribute to inflammation. If your dog is overweight, ask your veterinarian to set a calorie target based on an appropriate goal weight and whether a therapeutic weight-loss diet makes sense.
For a dog at a healthy weight, a veterinarian may consider a mobility-focused diet. The right choice also depends on nutritional adequacy for the dog’s life stage, other diseases, appetite, tolerance, and the household’s feeding routine.
- Check the nutrient amounts. EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids with evidence of a role in modifying chronic joint inflammation. A label that lists fish oil without giving EPA and DHA amounts does not show whether the food supplies an appropriate dose.
- Confirm the intended use. Check that the specific food is nutritionally appropriate for your dog’s life stage and intended feeding duration. Formulations and product names can change, so use current manufacturer labeling.
- Account for other conditions. Skin, heart, liver, kidney, or other health problems may affect which diet is suitable. Have your veterinarian review the whole diet rather than selecting a food solely for its mobility claim.
- Separate formulation from proof. A diet marketed or formulated for mobility is not proof that it prevents, reverses, or cures arthritis.
Veterinary mobility diets to discuss
Veterinary guidance names several therapeutic diets as examples for dogs with degenerative joint disease or mobility needs. They are options to discuss, not a ranked list: there is no head-to-head evidence here establishing one as the best choice.

Why weight control may matter more than a joint-food label
For an overweight dog, reducing excess weight can lower the load carried by sore joints. Ask the veterinarian for a daily calorie allowance and a safe weight-loss plan; do not assume that switching to a mobility formula alone will address excess weight. The veterinarian can decide whether a therapeutic weight-loss food is appropriate and how to monitor progress.

Body weight is only one consideration. If a dog is losing muscle or has another illness, a weight-loss plan or formula chosen without veterinary input may not meet the dog’s needs.
EPA, DHA, fish oil, and other joint ingredients
EPA and DHA are the dietary fatty acids most strongly supported in the veterinary sources considered here for modifying chronic joint inflammation. The dose matters: the words “fish oil” in an ingredient list do not tell you how much EPA and DHA the daily ration provides. Some veterinary diets specify a targeted amount based on body weight; ask whether the particular food supplies an appropriate amount for your dog.

Fish-oil supplements vary in concentration. Before adding one, ask your veterinarian to assess its EPA and DHA content, calories, and suitability alongside your dog’s food and medications. Do not add a supplement or change a prescribed treatment on the assumption that it will have the same effect for every dog.
Evidence for other nutraceuticals is less settled. VCA reports that controlled studies have failed to show a beneficial effect of glucosamine in dogs and advises considering EPA/DHA and physical rehabilitation instead. Cornell’s discussion is more qualified: Dr. Joseph J. Wakshlag says, “The problem with joint supplements is that few other than fish oil have been definitively proven to help slow the degeneration, but we think that things like glucosamine and chondroitin may help slow the progression.” These differing views support caution, not a guarantee that glucosamine or chondroitin will help an individual dog.

Cornell also quotes Dr. Matthew Brunke as saying, “Using fish oil may help in reducing the necessary dose of NSAIDs for pain relief.” Treat that as an attributed expert view, not a reason to adjust pain medication without the prescribing veterinarian.

A veterinarian diagnoses osteoarthritis through examination and, when indicated, imaging. Management may combine nutrition and weight control with controlled low-impact activity, rehabilitation, and pain management. Long-term nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use requires veterinary monitoring. A food change cannot take the place of an assessment or pain treatment.

Arrange a veterinary assessment for new or worsening limping, stiffness, reluctance to move, or other signs of pain. Ask for a plan that addresses diagnosis, target weight if relevant, activity, pain relief, and whether a mobility or weight-loss diet fits your dog’s overall health.
