His 2026 visit to spcaLA and Clear The Shelters
In August 2026, Hutcherson visited spcaLA’s Long Beach location, where he toured the facility, volunteered, walked dogs, and played with kittens, according to NBC Connecticut. It was his second year supporting NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters campaign with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which described itself as the campaign’s 2026 presenting sponsor.
“I’ve always loved animals and there’s a lot of great animals out there that need to find some good homes,” Hutcherson told NBCUniversal Local, as reported by NBC Connecticut. He also said, “It can be overwhelming, the idea of adopting an animal. But if you just lead with love and good intention, then it’s gonna work out.” That encouragement reflects his outlook; it should not be read as a guarantee or a substitute for considering whether a particular pet fits a household.

Why the campaign highlights large dogs
Hill’s 2026 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report says large dogs spent 70% more time in shelters on average than small dogs in 2025. The figure is attributed to Hill’s report in its campaign release and NBC Connecticut’s coverage; those sources provide the attribution, rather than an independent review of the report’s methodology. It is a comparison of average shelter time, not a measure of an individual dog’s behavior or suitability for a home.
Hill’s also attributed to Shelter Animals Count a figure of 147,000 animals added to the overall U.S. shelter population by year-end 2025. The sponsor’s release said the previous Clear The Shelters campaign adopted out over 160,000 pets and raised more than $628,000 for participating shelters. How to help shelter dogs if adoption isn’t right for you
Adoption is one way to help, but it is not the only one. Hutcherson put it plainly: “Even if you’re not ready to fully adopt yet, you can donate, you can volunteer,” he said, as reported by NBC Connecticut.
- Adopt: Look at available dogs through a local shelter or rescue, and ask about the individual animal’s needs, health, and behavior before deciding.
- Donate: Give directly to a shelter or rescue whose work you want to support. Check its website for accepted donation types and current needs.
- Volunteer: Ask a nearby organization what roles, training, and time commitments are available; opportunities differ by location.
- Find a local shelter: The ASPCA’s adoption-center page directs people outside its New York City service area to find their local shelter. Its hours, fees, and eligibility information apply to the NYC center, not shelters nationwide.
What Hutcherson’s story can—and can’t—tell prospective adopters
Driver’s adoption shows that Hutcherson took on a puppy with serious medical needs. It does not establish that every household should take on a similar commitment, or that a particular dog will thrive in every home. Prospective adopters can make a more informed choice by discussing a dog’s care needs with the shelter and considering their time, resources, and living situation. The large-dog shelter-time statistic is not a reason to assume that size alone determines whether a dog is suitable for an apartment or any other home.
