Her owner, Atsuko Sato, announced her death. Kabosu was reported to be 18, although her exact birth date was unknown and her age was estimated.
Sato shared the news in a personal blog post, and the Dogecoin Foundation subsequently confirmed Kabosu’s death. The announcement was the confirmed notice—not a repeat of the false 2017 report that had prematurely claimed she had died.
How Kabosu died
In her announcement, Atsuko Sato described Kabosu’s final moments as peaceful. Kabosu died at home in Sakura, where she had lived with Sato. The Guardian quoted Sato saying Kabosu “quietly passed away as if asleep while I caressed her.”
The Dogecoin Foundation’s obituary also reported Kabosu was 18. The Foundation gives her approximate birth date as November 2, 2005, but reporting noted that her actual birthday was unknown and her age was estimated.

Kabosu’s death was sometimes confused online with a 2017 report from China Central Television that falsely announced she had died. That earlier report was corrected; Sato’s May 24, 2024 blog post was the later, confirmed announcement.
From a rescued dog to a beloved companion
Kabosu was a female Shiba Inu from Japan. According to the Dogecoin Foundation, she was rescued from a puppy mill and adopted by Sato, a kindergarten teacher living in Sakura. Kabosu was a rescue dog who found a home with Sato rather than a dog bred or selected for an internet career.
Sato named her Kabosu, after a Japanese citrus fruit. Before the world knew her as Doge, she was simply a companion whose everyday life appeared in photographs on Sato’s personal blog.
That beginning matters. Kabosu’s fame did not come from a planned campaign. It came from one expressive photograph and the way people recognized humor, curiosity, and personality in an ordinary rescued pet.

The photograph that became Doge
Sato posted photographs of Kabosu to her blog in 2010. The best-known image shows Kabosu sitting on a sofa and looking sideways at the camera with a quizzical expression. The photograph became the visual foundation of the Doge meme.
By 2013, the image was circulating widely online with multicolored Comic Sans captions written in deliberately broken English. Phrases such as imagined observations and exaggerated reactions were presented as Kabosu’s inner monologue. The humor came partly from the contrast between the image and the playful, grammatically incorrect text.
“Doge” became more than one picture. It developed into an internet language: a Shiba Inu face paired with short, absurd, emotionally expressive captions. Kabosu was the real animal in the photographs, while Doge was the fictional online character built around them. Keeping those two ideas separate helps explain both her personal story and her cultural impact.
How Kabosu became connected to Dogecoin
Dogecoin launched in December 2013, using Kabosu’s image as its emblem. The cryptocurrency was created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a humorous response to the seriousness and speculation surrounding the early cryptocurrency world.

Kabosu did not create Dogecoin, found the project, or own the cryptocurrency. Sato was not one of its founders. The accurate description is that Kabosu’s image inspired the meme that became Dogecoin’s visual and cultural source.
Dogecoin quickly developed an online community and was used as a tipping currency on sites such as Reddit. Kabosu’s face therefore became associated with a global digital community even though her life remained rooted in a home in Sakura.
A physical memorial in Kabosu’s hometown
The Dogecoin Foundation says the Dogecoin and Doge communities raised almost $100,000 between November 2 and December 6, 2022, to create a bronze memorial to Kabosu in Furusato Square, a park in Sakura.
The memorial was unveiled on November 2, 2023, the date identified by the Foundation as Kabosu’s birthday. It gives admirers a physical place connected with her life and hometown, rather than treating her only as a digital symbol.

Her image became a valuable commercial property
Kabosu’s photograph became one of the most recognizable images in internet culture and acquired commercial value. The Guardian, citing Agence France-Presse in 2024, reported that an NFT artwork based on the image sold for $4 million. This is a historical reported sale price, not a current market value.
Kabosu’s rescue story remains part of her legacy
It is easy for a viral image to erase the animal behind it. Kabosu’s story points in the opposite direction. She was a puppy-mill rescue who became famous because someone shared photographs of her life at home. Her rise from rescued companion to global symbol is a reminder that an animal does not need a pedigree, a media plan, or a commercial purpose to become deeply meaningful to people.
The Dogecoin Foundation has used her story to emphasize animal welfare, rescue, and adoption. That message is separate from the financial value or price of Dogecoin. Kabosu’s death did not, by itself, change the cryptocurrency’s fundamentals and should not be treated as an investment signal.

For much of the internet, Kabosu will remain the face with the raised eyebrows and sideways glance: the dog behind “wow,” “such,” and “very.” But her life was larger than the meme. She was a rescued Shiba Inu, a beloved member of Sato’s family, and a dog whose ordinary photographs unexpectedly connected people across languages and countries.

After her death, the bronze memorial in Furusato Square offers a fitting contrast to her digital fame. Kabosu’s image may continue to appear online, but the story began with one dog, one owner, and a quiet life in Sakura.
