Australian surfer Kai McKenzie returned to the water in October 2024, about three months after a shark attack severed his right leg. In a clip reported by PerthNow on 25 November 2024, he was shown surfing with one remaining leg. Those are dated 2024 milestones; the reports do not establish his health or surfing activity in 2026.
What was Kai McKenzie’s update?
PerthNow reported that McKenzie went back into the water in October 2024, paddled to the area near Port Macquarie where he had been bitten, and surfed with friends. The outlet later reported a clip of him surfing with one remaining leg. Its account makes the “incredible update” specific: he had returned to surfing after losing his right leg in the attack. PerthNow’s 25 November 2024 report reproduced his caption: “Ya ain’t never gunna take me away from the ocean!”
What happened in the shark attack?
McKenzie was 23 when he was attacked while surfing at North Shore Beach near Port Macquarie, New South Wales, on 23 July 2024. ABC News reported that the shark severed his right leg; McKenzie fought it off and caught a wave to shore. An off-duty retired police officer used a dog lead as a tourniquet while they waited for paramedics. ABC News reported the attack and McKenzie’s first public comments on 27 July 2024.
When did he say he wanted to surf again?
In his first public comments after the attack, McKenzie said he intended to return to the water. ABC News quoted him on 27 July 2024: “I’ll be back in that water in no time! BIG F*** OFF TO THAT SHARK.” The October return reported by PerthNow and SURFER followed that stated intention. SURFER’s October 2024 report described his return and named LSD, Rage and Narval Wetsuits among those he thanked; that mention does not establish a current endorsement or commercial relationship.
