The couple did, however, discuss the four-month-old Shih Tzu warmly during the show’s Adoption Week, and Ripa said their dog Lena was on her way to meet him.
Who is Lucas, the puppy on Live?
Consuelos opened the October 12 episode holding Lucas, whom the program described as a four-month-old Shih Tzu recently rescued from a puppy mill. The show’s description, quoted by TV Insider, said Lucas “just loves everyone and would make a great family pet.”

During the segment, Consuelos suggested “Javi” as a possible name. Ripa joked that he was naming a dog they had not adopted, making clear that Lucas’s appearance did not amount to an adoption announcement.
Are Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos adopting Lucas?
The outcome remained undecided in the reporting available after the episode. Ripa said Lena was on her way to meet Lucas and then added, “We will see.” That comment leaves open the possibility that the family could consider adoption, but it does not establish that Lucas went home with them.

Viewers who interpreted the appearance as a potential new family member were responding to a genuine tease, not a confirmed change in the household. Unless Ripa, Consuelos, the show, or a later reliable report confirms an adoption, Lucas should be described as a puppy they met and considered—not as their newly adopted dog.
Why the segment attracted attention
Ripa and Consuelos have adopted dogs after they appeared in adoption segments on Live. Their previous dogs Chewie and Lena became part of that history, so Lucas’s appearance naturally prompted speculation about whether the pattern would repeat.

The couple’s earlier adoption history
According to TV Insider’s background report, the couple previously adopted Chewie and Lena after the dogs were featured on the program. Ripa announced Chewie’s death in February 2025; he was reported to be 17 years old. That history explains why viewers paid particular attention when Ripa mentioned Lena meeting Lucas.
Adoption Week context
Lucas appeared as part of the show’s Adoption Week programming, which brings adoptable dogs before the audience and highlights rescue placements. Appearing on the program can introduce a dog to potential adopters, but the segment itself does not prove that a specific placement has been completed.
