There is no universal price for adopting a kitten or covering its first year. Shelter fees and the care included in them vary, and veterinary costs depend on your location and the kitten’s age and health. For a useful budget, separate the adoption fee and starter setup from recurring food, litter, and preventive care, then get current itemized quotes from your shelter and veterinary clinic.
What published first-year estimates include
Two published estimates illustrate how much totals can differ. They use different dates and assumptions, so they are planning references—not current local quotes or figures to average together.

| Source and date | Published first-year estimate | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Petfinder, updated March 22, 2024 | $405–$2,285 | A broad estimate for a cat or kitten, including adoption, veterinary care and vaccines, flea and tick prevention, food, treats, bowls, litter supplies, a bed, carrier, toys, and scratching post. It excludes outliers such as emergencies and professional grooming. |
| ASPCA, table marked 2021 update | $1,904 | A cat estimate that combines annual costs with initial costs. Its listed annual items include food ($225), routine medical care ($160), parasite prevention ($140), litter ($150), toys ($22), treats ($36), insurance ($348), license ($15), grooming supplies ($28); listed initial items include spay/neuter ($150), initial medical care ($175), collar/leash/harness ($15), microchip ($20), litter box ($20), scratching post ($15), carrier ($40), and grooming tools ($20). |
Neither total should be treated as a kitten-specific quote for your area. In particular, the ASPCA’s $150 spay/neuter and $175 initial-medical figures are components of its dated estimate, not universal prices. Adoption packages may already include some care, so check before adding those expenses separately. ASPCA adoption guidance; ASPCA adoption-fee position; Petfinder cost estimate.

Ask what the adoption fee covers
Fees are set by individual organizations and may help fund veterinary services, spay/neuter, vaccinations, food, and care for animals that have not yet been adopted. Some organizations periodically reduce or waive fees. ASPCA puts the variation plainly: “Every animal welfare organization will have their own unique adoption process, fees and parameters.” ASPCA adoption tips; ASPCA adoption information.

- Vaccinations already given and any follow-up doses still due
- Parasite treatment or prevention
- Microchip and registration details
- An initial veterinary examination
- Any starter food or other supplies
Compare the total fee and included medical services across shelters rather than assuming a higher or lower fee means the same package. Also ask about known medical needs and the kitten’s age, since both affect follow-up planning.

Plan for veterinary care in the first year
Arrange veterinary care soon after adoption and ask the clinic to map out an age- and health-appropriate plan. Costs to discuss include the initial exam, vaccines, parasite prevention, follow-up visits, and spay/neuter. AAHA’s new-kitten checklist recommends planning healthcare during the first year, arranging vaccine and annual-exam visits, and scheduling spay/neuter before five months of age; your veterinarian should tailor timing to the kitten’s age, history, health, and local requirements. ASPCA adoption tips; AAHA new-kitten checklist.
There is no current nationwide veterinary price established by these sources. Petfinder’s $110–$550 estimate for veterinary care and vaccines is from its March 2024 guide; the ASPCA table’s $175 initial medical and $160 routine medical figures are from a table marked 2021 update. Use those only as dated reference points. Call clinics where you live and request an itemized estimate for the services your kitten still needs.

Consider insurance separately from routine care
Pet insurance is optional and does not replace routine veterinary visits or preventive care. ASPCA notes that plans can differ and may have waiting periods and exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Compare the actual policy terms—including covered conditions, exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles, reimbursement, limits, and premium—and check eligibility before relying on a policy in your budget. ASPCA pet insurance information.
Budget for food, litter, and a basic home setup
Kitten-formulated food is a recurring growth-stage expense. ASPCA says kitten formula is generally used until maturity at about one year; kittens have higher energy needs than adults, and a veterinarian can advise on an individual diet. Petfinder’s 2024 guide estimates food at $120–$500 per year, while the ASPCA’s 2021 table lists $225 per cat per year. These are dated estimates with different assumptions, not a current price guarantee. ASPCA cat care guidance; Petfinder cost estimate.

Toys need not be elaborate, and upgrades such as automated litter equipment are optional. ASPCA’s setup guidance includes bowls, a litter box, toys, a scratching post, and a dedicated safe space. Check your shelter’s transport rule: the ASPCA NYC Adoption Center, for example, says cats and kittens must leave in a secure carrier. ASPCA cat care guidance; ASPCA NYC Adoption Center.

Build a local budget by timing
| Budget category | Typical items to check | How to estimate it |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront or one-time | Adoption fee; uncovered initial veterinary care; carrier; litter box; bowls; safe sleeping setup; scratching post; first food and litter purchases | Get the shelter’s current fee and included-care list, then price only the supplies and care not already covered. |
| Recurring | Kitten food; litter; routine veterinary visits and vaccines; parasite prevention; replacement toys or supplies | Ask local providers for current costs and estimate household use; revisit the food plan as the kitten grows. |
| Variable or contingency | Illness or emergency treatment; optional insurance premiums; household-specific needs | Keep this distinct from predictable routine costs. If considering insurance, evaluate the policy’s terms rather than assuming every expense is covered. |
For a local estimate, contact the shelter and the clinic you expect to use. Ask for current itemized costs, note which services are already included in the adoption, and base the remaining plan on your kitten’s medical history and the supplies your home actually needs.
