An individual may be outgoing and energetic, reserved and independent, or show a mix of traits, so assess the dog’s health, history, and behavior rather than relying on its label.
Both parent breeds shed and have different social and activity tendencies. Early socialization, patient reward-based training, coat care, and age- and health-appropriate exercise can help you decide whether a particular dog fits your household.

| Temperament | May be sociable and energetic, reserved and independent, or a combination |
| Training | Use early, patient, consistent, reward-based training |
| Exercise | Adjust daily activity to the dog’s age, health, and observed stamina |
| Best suited to | An owner prepared to assess and meet the needs of the individual dog |
These are broad parent-breed reference points, not guarantees. The American Kennel Club’s Labrador guidance describes Labs as outgoing and energetic, while its Chow Chow guidance notes their independent nature and reserve around strangers.
How big does a Lab Chow mix get?
There is no reliable, authoritative size range for this cross. Parent-breed descriptions are not a valid prediction of a mixed dog’s adult weight. For context only, the American Kennel Club reports adult Labrador Retrievers typically weigh 55–80 pounds; VCA Animal Hospitals gives Chow Chows a range of 45–70 pounds. Those figures describe the parent breeds, not Lab Chow mixes.

Parents’ size, the puppy’s growth pattern, age, and body structure can offer clues, but a puppy cannot be sized precisely from its age or paw size alone. Ask your veterinarian to track growth and assess body condition.
Appearance can vary too. A dog may resemble one parent more than the other, and a Chow-like tail or coat is not guaranteed. Do not assume that every mix will have a black or blue-black tongue.
Coat and colors
Both parent breeds have double coats, but the cross’s coat length and texture vary. A dog with a thick, Chow-like coat may need frequent, thorough brushing and checks for mats; a shorter coat still sheds. Inspect the individual dog’s coat and tailor care to it.
Neither parent breed is a dependable basis for promising a hypoallergenic dog. The mix should not be presented as low-shedding: both parents shed, and the amount and seasonal pattern vary by individual.
Lab Chow mix temperament
Temperament depends on genetics, early experience, training, health, and environment. The Labrador side may contribute sociability, energy, and enthusiasm for activity. Chow Chow guidance describes dogs that can be loyal and intelligent but independent and reserved around unfamiliar people. An individual mix may show either tendency or a combination.
Do not assume a Lab Chow mix will be friendly with every person or dog, or that it will have a fixed activity level. Observe the dog’s behavior and history. Socialization should provide calm, positive experiences and safe opportunities to disengage, not force the dog to interact.
Are Lab Chow mixes good family dogs?
Some may suit family life, but there is no guarantee based on the cross alone. Consider the individual dog’s temperament, health, social history, and comfort with handling. Supervise every interaction with children. Teach children not to climb on a dog, disturb it while eating or sleeping, or force physical contact.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Exercise and enrichment
There is no fixed exercise quota for a Lab Chow mix. Labrador guidance emphasizes substantial activity, while VCA says Chow Chows need daily exercise but are not suited to overly vigorous exertion and can overheat easily. ASPCA notes that exercise needs vary with factors including age and health. Adjust activity to the individual dog, and do not assume it can safely match a high-energy Labrador’s exercise demands.
A useful routine can include:
- Daily walks, adjusted to the dog’s age, health, and stamina.
- Play or enrichment activities the dog enjoys, such as a food puzzle or supervised scent game.
- Short training sessions and opportunities to explore safely.
- Secure outdoor movement where available, without treating a yard as a replacement for attention and activity.
Build activity gradually for puppies and dogs returning to exercise. On warm days, use caution, particularly with a thick-coated dog. Provide water and shade, avoid strenuous activity in heat, and consult a veterinarian about an individual dog’s heat tolerance.
Training a Lab Chow mix
Training response varies. AKC describes Labs as generally eager to please and easy to train; it recommends early socialization and patient positive training for Chows, which can be independent. Use reward-based methods, predictable routines, and consistent household rules.
Useful priorities include:
- Name and attention: Reward the dog for checking in with you, then gradually add distractions.
- Leash skills: Practice calm, controlled walking before busier outings.
- Recall: Start in a safe enclosed space and use a long line outdoors; do not test recall near traffic or wildlife.
- Handling: Pair gentle handling with rewards and proceed at the dog’s pace.
- Visitor routines: Give the dog a predictable, safe place to settle when people arrive.
Avoid forcing interactions or using intimidation. If the dog shows persistent fear, growling, snapping, or other concerning behavior, seek help from a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional.

Both parent breeds have double coats and shed. Grooming needs depend on the individual dog’s coat. A thick, longer coat may need frequent brushing and checks for matting; the American Kennel Club recommends regular grooming for Chow Chow coats. VCA advises brushing rough-coated Chows every other day and smooth-coated Chows once or twice weekly; these are parent-breed guidelines, not a fixed schedule for the mix.
A suitable undercoat rake for double-coated dogs or slicker brush may help, but choose tools and technique to suit the dog’s coat and tolerance. Work gently and check areas prone to tangles, including behind the ears and around the neck. Do not shave a double coat as a default summer grooming measure; ask a veterinarian or professional groomer about specific coat problems.

Routine care should include checking ears and skin, trimming nails as needed, and brushing teeth with canine toothpaste. Seek veterinary advice for painful, red, or irritated ears or skin.
Health concerns
No cross-specific health prevalence figures or complete health profile were found in the reviewed sources. Parent-breed concerns are reasons to ask about health history and arrange veterinary care, not proof that a particular mix has or will develop a condition.
VCA lists hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, entropion, and hypothyroidism among Chow Chow concerns. An American Kennel Club Gazette breed column from September 2025 also discusses Chow concerns including elbow and hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, thyroid disease, and eye disorders. These are parent-breed references, not diagnoses or risk estimates for Lab Chow mixes.
For a puppy, ask for documented health history and relevant parent screening results, then arrange a veterinary examination. For an adopted adult, ask about its medical history and have a veterinarian establish a care plan. Seek veterinary care for health concerns rather than trying to diagnose them from breed ancestry.
Feeding and weight control
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s age and health. Use the food label as a starting point, then adjust with veterinary guidance based on body condition and weight trend. Measure meals and account for treats; a veterinarian can help assess body condition and recommend an appropriate feeding plan.
Growing puppies need a diet and feeding schedule appropriate to their development. Do not add supplements without veterinary advice.
Finding a Lab Chow mix
If buying a puppy, ask to meet the mother and, where possible, see the father or reliable records about him. Ask for veterinary and health-screening documentation relevant to the parents and their family lines. A claim of “hybrid vigor” is not a substitute for health records.

Look for a seller who answers questions, provides clear records, and is interested in whether you can care for the dog. Avoid sellers who will not identify the parents, pressure you to pay quickly, or cannot explain the puppy’s health history.
An adult rescue dog can make it easier to assess its current size, coat, activity, and behavior. Ask the rescue about medical history, handling, behavior with visitors and other animals, and any known behavior concerns. Breed labels are not a substitute for evaluating the individual dog.

It is a dog believed to have Labrador Retriever and Chow Chow ancestry. Its traits are not predictable from the cross alone: it may be sociable and energetic, reserved and independent, or a combination.
How big will a Lab Chow mix get?
There is no substantiated fixed adult size range for the cross. Parent size, growth pattern, age, and veterinary assessment offer more useful clues than a promised weight range.
How much do Lab Chow mixes shed?
Both parent breeds have double coats and shed, but the amount varies by individual. A thick coat may need frequent brushing and mat checks; the mix should not be assumed to be hypoallergenic or low-shedding.

Is a Lab Chow mix good with kids?
Some may be suitable, but compatibility depends on the individual dog and household. Supervise every interaction and teach children to respect the dog’s space.
Are Lab Chow mixes easy to train?
Training response varies. Use early, patient, consistent, reward-based training and socialization rather than assuming the dog will inherit one parent’s trainability.
How much exercise does a Lab Chow mix need?
There is no fixed quota for the cross. Adjust daily activity to the dog’s age, health, and observed stamina, and take care in warm weather.
What health problems should I watch for?
No cross-specific prevalence figures were found. Ask about the dog’s health history and relevant parent screening, and arrange veterinary examinations. Parent-breed concerns are not proof that an individual mix has a condition.
What health records should I ask for?
For a puppy, request documented health history and relevant screening results for the parents. For an adult rescue, ask about medical history and arrange a veterinary evaluation.
The Bottom Line
A Lab Chow mix is not a predictable package: size, temperament, coat, and activity needs vary. Both parent breeds shed, and their differing social styles and exercise guidance make it important to assess the individual dog. Ask about health history, provide patient training and suitable coat care, and consult a veterinarian about the dog’s needs.
