Large Dog Breeds With Longer Life Expectancies: What the Evidence Shows

No study provides a definitive longest-lived large-dog ranking. Evidence points to comparatively favorable figures for Akitas, Newfoundlands, Giant Schnauzers and Alaskan Malamutes, but measures, samples and populations differ.

There is no scientifically definitive ranking of the longest-lived large dogs. Different studies use different definitions of “large” and “giant,” countries, years, and measurements. Taken together, the most favorable large-breed figures in the available evidence belong to the Akita, Newfoundland, Giant Schnauzer and Alaskan Malamute—but these are population estimates, not promises for an individual dog.

For context, large dogs generally live shorter lives than smaller dogs, and giant dogs have lower size-group estimates in US life tables. Breed choice matters, but so do inherited disease risk, body condition, preventive care and the quality of life a dog experiences.

What “longer life expectancy” means for a large dog

Before comparing breeds, identify what a number actually measures. A life expectancy at birth is an estimate calculated from a population’s survival data. A median lifespan is the age by which half of the dogs in a defined population have died. Median age at death describes the recorded ages of dogs that died; it is not necessarily a life-expectancy estimate for every puppy born.

Those measures can produce different results even when they concern the same breed. The Royal Veterinary College/VetCompass giant-breed study published in 2026 used UK primary-care records from 2019 and calculated median ages at death among dogs with recorded deaths. A 2023 Frontiers in Veterinary Science analysis used US Banfield clinical records from 2013–2019 to estimate life expectancy at birth by size group. A 2024 Dogs Trust summary describes a separate UK study of 155 breeds. None of these datasets is a universal leaderboard.

“Large” and “giant” are also not standardized categories. One source may put a heavy working breed in a large group, while another separates giant dogs. Treat a breed’s figure as evidence about a particular population, not as a guaranteed expiration date.

Large breeds with the most favorable figures in the available evidence

Breed American Kennel Club guidance RVC/VetCompass 2026 UK cohort How to read the result
Akita 11–15 years 11.3-year median age at death (n=74) One of the stronger results in both sources, but the measures are not interchangeable.
Newfoundland 10–12 years 10.3-year median age at death (n=70) Favorable within the giant-breed cohort; still a giant breed with substantial health considerations.
Giant Schnauzer 10–12 years 10.7-year median age at death (n=22) Promising figures, although the cohort sample is much smaller than for Akitas or Newfoundlands.
Alaskan Malamute Not stated in the cited AKC range 11.2-year median age at death (n=136) A comparatively high observed median in the UK records, with one of the larger breed samples in this table.
Great Swiss Mountain Dog Not stated in the cited AKC range 11.2-year median age at death (n=3) The estimate is highly uncertain because only three recorded deaths were included.
Black Russian Terrier Not stated in the cited AKC range 12.7-year median age at death (n=3) The highest recorded median in the cohort, but the tiny sample means it should not be called the longest-lived giant breed.
Belgian Malinois 14–16 years Not stated in the cited giant-breed results The AKC range is high, but this is not a like-for-like giant-breed estimate and should not be ranked beside the cohort medians.

The Akita, Newfoundland and Giant Schnauzer are the cautious shortlist because their AKC ranges sit toward the upper end of large-breed examples and their recorded UK medians exceeded 10 years. The Alaskan Malamute also performed comparatively well in the UK cohort. The Black Russian Terrier’s 12.7-year figure looks striking, but it came from only three deaths; a small sample can move a median dramatically.

What the major datasets actually found

Royal Veterinary College/VetCompass: giant breeds in UK records

The 2026 cohort reported an overall giant-breed median age at death of 8.94 years. Breed medians ranged from 4.77 years for the Tibetan Mastiff to 12.7 years for the Black Russian Terrier. Other higher medians included Akita at 11.3 years (74 dogs), Alaskan Malamute at 11.2 (136), Great Swiss Mountain Dog at 11.2 (3), Giant Schnauzer at 10.7 (22) and Newfoundland at 10.3 (70).

These are ages at death for dogs whose deaths were recorded in available UK veterinary records from 2019. Dogs missing from the records, differences in local practice, and unequal breed sample sizes all affect the estimate. The study’s conclusion also raised a welfare concern: giant dogs showed evidence of a higher disorder burden and shorter lifespans than the wider dog population, potentially affecting both quality and quantity of life.

Frontiers in Veterinary Science: US life expectancy by size

A 2023 analysis of Banfield clinical records from 2013–2019 estimated life expectancy at birth of 11.51 years for large dogs and 9.51 years for giant dogs. These are size-group results, not breed rankings. The researchers did not analyze differences between breeds within a size category, so the table cannot tell you whether one large breed outlives another.

The same work reported different estimates by body-condition score. That finding supports keeping a dog at a healthy condition, but it does not show that a particular food, scale or intervention guarantees a longer life. Body condition is more than a number on a scale: a veterinarian should assess fat cover, muscle and overall health.

Dogs Trust: a large UK multi-breed summary

Dogs Trust’s 2024 summary of a study covering 584,734 dogs, 284,734 recorded deaths and 155 breeds reported an overall median life expectancy of 12.5 years. It found that large breeds had shorter life expectancy than smaller size groups. The summary gives Labrador Retriever as an example at 12.0 years. That figure comes from a different UK population and measurement than the giant-breed cohort, so it should not be merged into the RVC ranking.

Veterinary Journal: bodyweight and longevity

A 2013 Veterinary Journal analysis of 5,095 confirmed UK dog deaths reported an overall median longevity of 12.0 years. Increasing bodyweight was negatively correlated with longevity. The longest-lived named breeds in that analysis were small or medium rather than large, reinforcing the broad pattern that greater size is associated with shorter average survival.

Why large and giant dogs usually live shorter lives

The datasets consistently show a size gradient: smaller dogs tend to outlive large dogs, while giant dogs have the lowest size-group estimate in the US tables. The evidence does not establish one single biological mechanism for every breed, but it does show that body size and breed-related disorder patterns are important population-level factors.

Giant breeds can mature rapidly and carry more mass, and they may be predisposed to orthopedic, cardiac or other inherited problems. The exact risks differ by breed. A breed with a favorable median age can still have serious conditions that cause pain, disability or early death. Longevity alone therefore cannot describe welfare.

How to choose a large breed when longevity matters

1. Start with a realistic size category

Decide whether you can manage a large or giant adult for its entire life. Housing rules, vehicle space, exercise needs, food costs, anesthesia and emergency care all become more consequential as body size increases. A breed’s typical adult weight is often more useful for planning than a generic “large” label.

2. Use longevity as one filter, not the whole decision

The Akita, Newfoundland, Giant Schnauzer and Alaskan Malamute have comparatively favorable figures in the cited sources, but that does not make one automatically healthier or easier to live with. Temperament, trainability, grooming, heat tolerance, exercise requirements and known inherited disorders should be weighed alongside lifespan.

3. Ask for documented health testing

Work with a responsible breeder or adoption organization that can explain the parents’ health history and the conditions relevant to the breed. Ask what screening was performed, which results are available in writing, and how the organization handles a diagnosed inherited disease. A long-lived line is not necessarily a healthy line if dogs spend much of those years in pain or with severe restrictions.

4. Plan preventive veterinary care

Schedule routine examinations, vaccinations and parasite control appropriate to your region. Large and giant dogs may benefit from earlier discussion of orthopedic, cardiac or other breed-relevant screening. Seek veterinary advice promptly for persistent lameness, exercise intolerance, breathing changes, unexplained weight loss, abdominal enlargement or reduced appetite.

5. Keep body condition under control

Ask your veterinarian to score body condition and muscle, then adjust food and treats as your dog grows, ages or changes activity. A home scale can help track trends in a very large dog, but weight alone cannot diagnose excess fat or muscle loss. Use it as a monitoring aid, not as proof that a product or routine extends lifespan.

How to interpret a breed number without being misled

  • Check the measure. “11.3 years” as a median age at death is not the same statistic as 11.3 years of life expectancy at birth.
  • Check the population. UK primary-care records, US clinic records and multi-source UK studies represent different dogs and healthcare systems.
  • Check the date. The RVC cohort used 2019 records; the Banfield analysis covered 2013–2019; the Dogs Trust summary was published in 2024; the Veterinary Journal analysis was published in 2013.
  • Check the sample size. A result based on three deaths, such as the Black Russian Terrier and Great Swiss Mountain Dog medians, is much less stable than one based on 74, 70 or 136 dogs.
  • Check the category. “Large” and “giant” are not interchangeable, and the Belgian Malinois AKC range is not a giant-breed cohort estimate.
  • Separate quantity from quality. A dog living longer is not automatically experiencing better welfare; pain, mobility, chronic disease and mental wellbeing matter.

Common mistakes when comparing large-breed longevity

Treating an AKC range as a guarantee

Breed-guide ranges are useful orientation, but they are general guidance and do not predict an individual dog’s age at death. Genetics, early-life care, accidents, disease and access to veterinary treatment all vary.

Ranking tiny samples

The 12.7-year Black Russian Terrier median is not proof that the breed is the universal winner. Three deaths cannot provide the same confidence as a much larger population.

Combining incompatible studies

Putting a 10.3-year median age at death beside an 11.51-year life expectancy at birth and calling them a league table creates false precision. Keep each number attached to its measure, geography, dates and sample.

Assuming weight control guarantees extra years

The US study found life-expectancy differences by body-condition score at the population level. It did not prove that a specific diet, device or intervention will extend an individual dog’s life, and it did not compare breeds within size groups.

Bottom line for prospective owners

If you want a large dog with evidence suggesting comparatively favorable longevity, begin by researching the Akita, Newfoundland, Giant Schnauzer and Alaskan Malamute. The supporting figures are encouraging but not definitive: they come from different sources, and the strongest-looking outliers may rely on very small samples. Choose the individual and breeding or adoption source for overall health, temperament and welfare, then protect that investment with a healthy body condition, preventive care and prompt treatment of disease.
