There is no standardized, evidence-based ranking of the eleven largest domestic cat breeds in the registry profiles reviewed. This guide instead highlights eleven notably large or substantial breeds, while separating published weight ranges from traits such as height, length, and build. Breed ranges come from different organizations and overlap, so they should not be read as a precise ranking or a promise about an individual cat’s adult size.

How to interpret “largest”

A cat can look large because it is heavy, tall, long-bodied, or strongly built. Those are different measures. The available registry material gives comparable weight ranges for six breeds, but not a consistent set of measurements for all eleven. The six weight ranges below are therefore useful reference points, not a ranked list of average cats.

The figures are values on breed-guide pages accessed October 7, 2026; those pages do not state when the figures were published. Individual cats may fall outside a guide range, and sex, age, and body condition affect size.

Six breeds with published adult weight ranges

Breed Published weight range Source
Maine Coon 10–20 lb in the GCCF guide; TICA gives sex-specific typical ranges: females 12–15 lb and males around 18–22 lb GCCF; TICA
Siberian 13–26 lb GCCF
Ragdoll 10–20 lb GCCF
RagaMuffin 10–20 lb GCCF
Norwegian Forest Cat 9–16 lb GCCF
Selkirk Rex 9–16 lb GCCF

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is often described as one of the largest domestic breeds. TICA’s profile emphasizes its long body and substantial bone, and its sex-specific figures show why a single breed-wide number can mislead: adult females are typically 12–15 pounds, while adult males are usually around 18–22 pounds. TICA also describes the breed as slow to mature, so a young cat may not yet reflect its adult size. TICA’s Maine Coon profile recommends interactive toys as a way to provide exercise and bonding. A sturdy, spacious cat tree may be a sensible fit consideration for a large cat, but that is not a tested product recommendation.

Siberian

The GCCF guide lists Siberians at 13–26 pounds, the broadest and highest upper endpoint among the six ranges in the table. That does not establish that Siberians are the heaviest breed on average: the guides do not provide a common method or directly comparable average measurements.

Ragdoll

The GCCF gives Ragdolls a range of 10–20 pounds. The Cat Fanciers’ Association describes the breed as broad-chested, long, muscular, and sturdy, and says Ragdolls reach full size and weight at four years. CFA recommends regular combing with a steel comb at least once or twice a week. CFA’s Ragdoll profile provides that breed-specific grooming guidance.

RagaMuffin

The GCCF guide lists RagaMuffins at 10–20 pounds. That range overlaps the Ragdoll range, but overlapping published ranges do not prove that the breeds have identical typical adult weights or builds.

Norwegian Forest Cat

The GCCF guide lists this breed at 9–16 pounds. Its range overlaps with the Selkirk Rex range below; the figures alone do not determine which breed appears larger or has the greater average adult weight.

Selkirk Rex

The GCCF guide lists Selkirk Rex cats at 9–16 pounds. This is a published breed range, not a guarantee that an individual will reach its upper end.

Five more breeds often considered for size

The following breeds are included as notably large or substantial candidates, but the sources cited here do not provide comparable adult weight figures for them. They are not assigned places in a size ranking.

Ragamuffin

The GCCF uses the spelling “RagaMuffin” and provides its 10–20-pound guide range above. “Ragamuffin” is a common variant spelling, not an additional breed in this list.

Ragdoll

Ragdoll already appears among the six breeds with a published weight range. It is not a second entry: its broad, sturdy frame and slow maturation are relevant to how its size develops, rather than evidence for a separate ranking.

Savannah

Savannah cats are sometimes discussed for height and a tall, lean appearance. The reviewed material does not give a comparable adult weight range, so height-related descriptions cannot support ranking the breed by weight here.

Maine Coon and Siberian are not a complete top tier

The six breeds with cited weight ranges are candidates supported by the available registry guides, not a complete or ordered top six. The available evidence also does not establish a definitive selection or order for all eleven breeds. A reliable ranking would need the same adult measurement method and sex-aware data applied consistently across breeds.

What to consider when choosing a large cat

Breed size is only one part of day-to-day fit. Consider the individual cat’s expected adult weight, body shape, grooming needs, activity, and maturity alongside your home and care routine. A tall or long cat may need more room for movement and suitable equipment even if it is not at the high end of a published weight range.

  • Ask about sex and maturity: some breed sources distinguish male and female sizes, and some cats take years to reach full size.
  • Match care to coat: grooming recommendations vary by breed; CFA’s steel-comb advice is specifically for Ragdolls.
  • Plan for play: TICA notes that interactive toys can give Maine Coons exercise and support bonding.
  • Judge the individual, not the headline: a breed’s upper weight figure is not a target, and a large-looking cat may owe its appearance to length, height, bone, or coat rather than mass.

Why there is no definitive top eleven

The sources do not use one standardized system to rank all domestic breeds. GCCF provides weight ranges for several breeds, TICA gives sex-specific Maine Coon ranges, and CFA describes Ragdoll size and maturity without supplying a directly comparable weight range in the cited profile. TICA’s directory says it recognizes 73 breeds, but that registry context is not a size measurement. Without consistent adult data across the same population and a defined measure, a numbered ranking would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.
