A Raspberry Pi, camera, computer vision, and a laser sound like the setup for a science-fiction pest control device. In 2021, researcher Ildar Rakhmatulin demonstrated a prototype designed to detect mosquitoes and aim a laser at them automatically. It is an interesting robotics experiment—but it is not a safe home device for use around dogs, cats, children, or other pets.

What the mosquito-zapping prototype does

The system combines a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, a Raspberry Pi Camera module, OpenCV-based image processing, and a galvanometer-driven mirror assembly. The camera watches a defined area for flying insects. When the software identifies and tracks a mosquito, the mirrors redirect the laser toward the insect.

The reported prototype used a nominal 1-watt laser. That is vastly more powerful than an ordinary low-power presentation pointer. Its purpose was to heat and kill a mosquito, not merely illuminate or distract it.

The demonstration took place at roughly 300 millimeters—about one foot—from the target area, according to Tom’s Hardware’s project report. That short working distance matters. It does not describe a device that can safely scan an entire room, protect a backyard, or operate reliably around a sleeping pet.

It was not an “AI kills every mosquito” machine

Headlines and reposts often turn the project into a fully autonomous mosquito-defense system. The published results were much more limited.

  • The software did not detect every mosquito.
  • The best tested algorithms achieved a reported kill rate of about 15%, as Hackaday’s report describes.
  • “Two mosquitoes per second” was a reported or claimed neutralization capacity, not a demonstrated sustained result under ordinary household conditions.
  • The work was an experimental prototype, not a commercially validated pest-control product.

Tracking a mosquito against a controlled background is difficult enough. A real home adds curtains, reflective surfaces, moving people, pet fur, dust, flies, moths, and changing light. A system that mistakes a non-target object for an insect could direct a powerful beam somewhere entirely unintended.

Why this is especially dangerous around pets

A laser capable of thermally damaging a mosquito can seriously injure an eye. Cats and dogs may also look directly at a moving light source, chase it, or put their faces near the equipment. A pet cannot understand a warning label, and a quick head movement is enough to turn a controlled setup into an eye-exposure hazard.

The risk is not limited to the animal being targeted. People in the room, visiting children, birds, small mammals, and other animals could be exposed. The beam could also strike a mirror, glass, glossy furniture, or another reflective surface. A powerful laser may create a fire hazard as well as an eye hazard.

YsChois Electric Fly Swatter, Bug Zapper Companion, Mosquito Killer Racket | Gold Zone Voltage, Densest 3mm Mesh, Apple-Like Weight, AA Battery Operated (not incl) - Pro Swat Tips for Indoor & Outdoor
  • GOLD ZONE 3400V — CALIBRATED POWER, CLEAN CONTACT — Many fly zappers are either too weak (bugs wriggle free) or so strong that bugs burst and scatter debris. Our 3400V electric fly swatter is built around the Gold Zone: small pests like mosquitoes, flies, fruit flies, and gnats drop in about a second on contact; larger insects like wasps and hornets take 3 to 5 seconds of held contact. Calibrated to make contact clean, with no splatter flung across walls or counters.
  • DENSEST 3 MM MESH WITH EXTRA-WIDE 8.6-INCH HEAD — MORE CONTACT AREA PER SWING — The tighter the mesh, the more likely every swing connects: our 3 mm grid is the densest available, so even tiny fruit flies and gnats meet the electrified wires instead of slipping through the gaps. Paired with an 8.6-inch wide racket head, each swing covers more area. Built for use on mosquitoes, house flies, fruit flies, gnats, moths, wasps, hornets, and stink bugs.
  • APPLE-LIGHT 7.5 OZ — ONE-HAND SWING, LESS ARM FATIGUE — This handheld bug zapper racket weighs just 7.5 oz, so you can swing faster, react quicker, and connect more often. Light enough to handle with one hand — hold your coffee, carry your plate, or hold your child with the other. Comfortable to use even during a long backyard barbecue or an evening clearing mosquitoes from the bedroom before sleep.
  • 5-LAYER GRID DESIGN — BUILT WITH FAMILIES IN MIND — The 5-layer design encloses the inner high-voltage grid behind a touch-spaced outer mesh, keeping fingers away from the electrified wires. A purely physical, contact-based design — no sprays, no liquids, no glue, nothing to refill. A practical pick for households with children and pets who want handheld mosquito and fly control in the living room, bedroom, office, nursery, or kitchen. Keep away from children under 8 unless supervised.
  • GRAB-AND-GO — AA BATTERY, ONE BUTTON, ZERO COMPLEXITY — See a bug, grab it, press the button, swing — react in seconds, no setup needed. No charging, no mode switching, no settings to adjust. This battery operated fly zapper runs on 2 AA batteries (not included) that swap in seconds and are available at any store. Unlike rechargeable rackets that die mid-use, this one is ready whenever you are. An LED indicator confirms power at a glance. No cords, no cables, no outlets.

Even low-power laser products can cause serious eye injury under the wrong exposure conditions. Hackaday notes that even a 1 mW laser can pose a severe eye risk in some conditions. A nominal 1-watt laser should therefore never be treated as a stronger version of a pet toy or presentation pointer. Do not build, aim, test, or leave an automated laser system operating in an area accessible to pets or people.

What the research does—and does not—prove

Claim What the evidence supports
It uses machine vision to find mosquitoes Yes. The prototype used a camera, computer vision, and tracking software.
It can aim a laser automatically Yes, within the experimental setup, using galvanometer-controlled mirrors.
It kills two mosquitoes every second in a home No. That figure should not be presented as a sustained household performance.
It kills every mosquito No. Hackaday reports missed detections and an approximately 15% maximum kill rate.
It is suitable around cats and dogs No. The research does not establish safe operation around people, pets, or non-target insects.
It protects a whole room or yard No. Tom’s Hardware reports a demonstration distance of approximately 300 mm.

The related study, “Machine vision for low-cost remote control of mosquitoes by power laser,” was published in the Journal of Real-Time Image Processing, volume 18, pages 2027–2036. The Springer article record lists its online publication date as February 11, 2021. It describes experimental research, not a commercially validated mosquito-control product.

Do not confuse it with a photonic fence

The Raspberry Pi project is sometimes discussed alongside “photonic fence” research, but they are not the same system. A 2020 Scientific Reports study described a target area approximately 30–100 meters long, less than one meter wide, and three meters high. A 2024 Scientific Reports study reported a field-sized proof of concept intercepting mosquitoes at about 30 meters in controlled screenhouse tests.

Those results remain research-stage demonstrations. They do not mean the 2021 Raspberry Pi prototype had a 30-meter range, nor do they establish that a commercial, pet-safe backyard version is available.

Safer mosquito control for homes with pets

Pet owners can reduce mosquito exposure without introducing a high-powered beam into the household:

  1. Remove standing water. Empty plant saucers, buckets, toys, clogged gutters, and outdoor containers regularly. Mosquitoes can breed in surprisingly small amounts of stagnant water.
  2. Use screens and closed doors. Repair window and door screens, and avoid leaving exterior doors open during peak mosquito activity.
  3. Improve airflow. A fan can make it harder for mosquitoes to fly and land near people and pets, particularly in a sleeping area or sheltered patio.
  4. Ask a veterinarian before using repellents. Products containing permethrin, essential oils, or other active ingredients can be unsafe for some animals—especially cats. Never apply a human insect repellent to a pet unless a veterinarian specifically confirms that product and dose are appropriate.
  5. Use outdoor treatments carefully. Follow the label, remove pets and their food and water during application, and observe the stated re-entry time. A licensed pest professional can help identify breeding sites and select a treatment that fits the animals in the home.
  6. Keep heartworm prevention current. Mosquitoes can transmit heartworm disease to dogs and cats. Ask your veterinarian which preventive is appropriate for your pet and local risk.

What to do if a pet is exposed to a laser

Turn the device off, move the animal away from the beam, and contact a veterinarian promptly if the laser may have entered the pet’s eye. Watch for squinting, redness, tearing, cloudiness, pawing at the face, reluctance to move, or unusual sensitivity to light. Do not assume that an apparently normal eye rules out injury; retinal damage may not be obvious immediately.

If a high-powered laser has been operating around people, anyone who experienced a direct or reflected exposure should seek urgent medical advice, particularly if there are visual changes, a blind spot, pain, or persistent afterimages.

The practical verdict

The mosquito-zapping project is a compelling example of low-cost robotics: a small computer identifies a fast-moving insect, a camera supplies visual data, and precision mirrors steer a laser. Its value is as experimental machine-vision research.

Screens, water management, airflow, veterinarian-approved preventives, and careful professional pest control are safer ways to deal with mosquitoes.

FAQ

Can I use a mosquito-zapping laser around my dog or cat?

No. A laser powerful enough to heat or kill an insect can cause severe eye injury to pets and people. The prototype was not validated for safe operation around animals, children, or non-target objects.

Did the Raspberry Pi system really kill two mosquitoes per second?

That was a reported or claimed capacity, not a demonstrated sustained household kill rate. Hackaday reports missed detections and an approximately 15% maximum kill rate in testing.

How far away could the prototype detect and zap mosquitoes?

The demonstrated setup operated at approximately 300 millimeters, or one foot, according to Tom’s Hardware. It should not be confused with later, separate photonic-fence research conducted over much larger controlled areas.
