“Learning to Speak Cat” is Anthony Smith’s playful cartoon premise, not a guide to translating real feline behavior. Smith imagines what cats might say as they navigate human situations—and draws on a long career in cartooning, illustration, and advertising to bring those ideas to life.
How Anthony Smith became a cartoonist
Smith says his interest began young, inspired by the comics he read and collected. His first publication work was for a local newspaper; later, he drew puzzle pages for Marvel UK children’s comics.
He also worked in advertising as a writer and art director. Smith says his experience with graphic design and typography, along with art direction, shaped the way he designs cartoons.
The idea behind “Learn to Speak Cat”
Smith describes the feature as an imaginative look at cats’ own language and their attempts to communicate with people. Much of its humor comes from placing cats in familiar, human-like situations and wondering what they might say.

He currently does not have a cat, but says he observes and interacts with pets elsewhere for inspiration. That creative observation is different from an evidence-based method for interpreting feline communication: the feature is comedy, not behavioral advice.
Where to find Smith’s pet cartoons
Smith says most of his pet-themed cartoons appear on Facebook and GoComics. He describes Facebook as reaching a broader group of people who enjoy cats, dogs, and their antics, while he sees GoComics readers as more focused on comics. Those are his impressions, not platform audience statistics.

- Smith also identifies GoComics as a home for his Cattitude – Doggonit feature.
What Smith would ask a cat
Asked what he would say if he could speak cat for five minutes, Smith answered: “If I could actually speak cat for five minutes, I know exactly what I’d ask:” His question is, “What do you really think of us humans?”

Smith says he donated original art and prints to Cats Protection in the UK and the Cat Network in the USA. He does not give dates or donation totals. He also reflects on the responsibility of caring for a pet throughout its life; that is a personal perspective, not veterinary-care guidance.
