Leo, a pit bull in Rancho Cucamonga, California, lost his owner, Tina Rummel. A UPS driver named Katie Newhouser, who knew him from her delivery route, offered to look after him. Tina’s family later agreed he should stay with her for good. Viral headlines said he “sobs like a baby” and “begs” for a home. The original report is quieter than that, and the real sequence of events is worth getting right.
What happened to Leo
Inside Edition reported the story on July 16, 2017, under the title “Kindhearted UPS Driver Adopts Dog She Met on Her Route After Owner Dies.” Leo lived with Tina Rummel. Newhouser had become friendly with him on her route, and he would greet her and jump into her truck.
After Tina died, Newhouser contacted Tina’s son, who was away at the time. She offered to care for Leo until he came back.
Temporary care became a permanent home
The adoption was not immediate. Newhouser first offered a stopgap. The family then saw that Leo had bonded with her other dogs and seemed happy, and they agreed he should stay with her permanently.

Newhouser told Inside Edition: “I feel that this was the best-case scenario for him. He knew me already and I feel as though there was a huge bond already between us.”
What “sobs like a baby” really refers to
The emotional wording comes from later headline framing. The original report describes something smaller. Newhouser said: “He would whine just before falling asleep at night. I really do feel that he was missing Tina.”

- The reporting does not show that Leo literally begged for a home. The phrase is a dramatic summary of a dog who already knew and liked the driver.
- IHeartDogs republished the story under the “sobs like a baby” headline on October 17, 2022, crediting Inside Edition’s video. That is a retelling, not independent confirmation.
Why the story resonates
Leo’s familiarity with Newhouser mattered. He did not go to a stranger or a shelter. He went to someone he already trusted, in the same area, and she was willing to step in quickly. Newhouser’s own phrasing, “best-case scenario,” reflects that. Beyond that, the sources give no statistics or broader claims, so this stands as one person’s account of one dog.
