Andy McDonald, 61, was wing-foiling near the Boat Ramp break at Prevelly in Western Australia on the afternoon of 10 November 2025 when a shark struck him without warning. He said the impact sent him into the air and then underwater; his friend Neil Mattinson paddled over to help, and the two made it back to shore together.
What happened at Prevelly
McDonald was on the water between the Margaret River Bombie and Boat Ramp breaks when, as he told ABC News, “Just out of the blue — bang — it felt like a freight train.” He said something came up from beneath him and propelled him into the air.

McDonald landed on the shark and began punching at it. He said the animal dragged him underwater along with his board and sail, and that he thought he might die. He did not see the shark clearly.

Neil Mattinson was about 50 metres away and paddled over. At first he thought McDonald had been hurt by the sharp foiling equipment. Then, he told ABC, McDonald said “shark.”

The two paddled more than 300 metres back to shore together, according to ABC’s account. McDonald described damage to his board as bite-shaped and estimated its diameter at 350–380 millimetres; that figure is his estimate, not an independently reported measurement.
Was the shark identified?
No species identification is established in the cited reporting. McDonald said he did not see the animal, and a beachgoer’s suggestion that it could have been a juvenile white shark was speculation, not confirmation.

On 11 November, ABC quoted a Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development spokesperson saying the department was seeking the board and would analyse it to confirm the species. That report said results could take up to two weeks; it did not provide a result. The available account therefore does not establish what species was involved.
Checking beach information in Western Australia
For current conditions, check the SharkSmart WA app or website and follow warnings posted at the beach. DPIRD says SharkSmart provides near-real-time shark activity information, including alerts and warnings; reported sightings can lead to responses such as beach closures. Local signs also matter: the Shire of Augusta Margaret River advises beachgoers to check shark activity warnings and explains that Beach Emergency Number signs help emergency services identify a caller’s location.
