Cats.com rated Lotus cat food 7.8/10 (47/60, or B+) in a review last updated May 6, 2026. The review’s strongest marks were for ingredient quality and recall history; its weakest was price. Lotus offers wet stews and pâtés as well as oven-baked dry food, but the three recipes Cats.com assessed differ substantially in ingredients and estimated nutrient profiles. The score is Cats.com’s editorial judgment—not a certification or veterinary endorsement—and is best weighed against your cat’s preferences and your budget.

How Cats.com rated Lotus

Cats.com’s overall rating was 7.8/10, also shown as 47/60 and a B+. Its category scores were:

Category Cats.com score
Species-appropriateness 8/10
Ingredient quality 9/10
Product variety 8/10
Price 4/10
Customer experience 8/10
Recall history 10/10

The review, written by Liz Coleman, says Cats.com examined sourcing, manufacturing, and recall history, then ordered two wet foods and one dry food for an in-home assessment. It considered nutrient content, ingredients, smell, texture, and how appealing the foods were to cats. Cats.com’s methodology explains that ratings combine nutritional and practical factors and involve judgment: “Ratings are subject to interpretation and may change over time.” Read Cats.com’s rating methodology.

What kinds of Lotus cat food does the review cover?

Cats.com describes a range of formats rather than a single type of food: wet recipes, dry food, raw recipes, and raw toppers. Its review identifies six “Just Juicy” canned stews with shredded meat in broth, seven canned pâté recipes, and four grain-free oven-baked dry recipes. These formats have different textures and ingredient compositions, so a finding about one recipe should not be assumed to apply to the whole range.

Where the reviewed foods are made

According to Cats.com, Lotus dry food is baked in a Canadian bakery, while wet food is made in small batches at the company-owned micro-cannery in California. The review says ingredients are primarily sourced from the United States and Canada. It lists green-lipped mussel, venison, lamb, and lamb meal from New Zealand, ground rabbit from Italy, and vitamins and minerals from Europe, except biotin, which it says comes from India.

How the three reviewed recipes compare

The review’s examples illustrate why it helps to compare a specific recipe and format rather than rely on the brand score alone. The guaranteed analyses below are label figures reported by Cats.com. Calorie and dry-matter carbohydrate estimates are calculated values from the review; Cats.com warns its automatically calculated nutrient charts may not reflect typical nutrient values, and chart figures can differ from numbers in the article text.

Recipe Ingredients and guaranteed analysis Cats.com estimates Tradeoffs noted in the review
Just Juicy Venison Stew, canned Venison is first; the review says it contains 95% meat and broth. Crude protein 12%, crude fat 2%, crude fiber 0.5%, moisture 82%, ash 2.3%. 84.1 calories per 2.5-ounce can; 6.67% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis. Single animal-protein source and high moisture, but includes potato starch, sunflower oil, and carrots. Cats.com flags the high price. Venison is a less common protein option, not a guaranteed answer to an allergy or sensitivity.
Just Juicy Pork Stew, canned Pork is first. Crude protein 12%, crude fat 2%, crude fiber 1%, moisture 80%, ash 2.34%. About 62.8 calories per 2.5-ounce can; 13.3% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis. Single-protein and moisture-rich, but includes potato starch, carrots, olive oil, and sunflower oil; the review calls out starch.
Oven-Baked Duck Recipe, dry Duck and duck meal lead the ingredient list; pork liver is also included. Crude protein 34%, crude fat 15%, crude fiber 5.25%, moisture 10%, ash 6.5%. 417.7 calories per cup; 32.5% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis. Includes peas, pea fiber, tapioca, sweet potato, and other plant ingredients. Cats.com describes it as moderate in protein, low in fat, and high in carbohydrates, with greater energy density than the wet stews.

The estimates above are recipe-specific figures in Cats.com’s review, not guarantees of typical nutrient content. The duck dry food’s carbohydrate estimate should not be generalized to Lotus’s wet recipes or every food in the range.

Is Lotus cat food worth the price?

Price was Cats.com’s lowest-scoring category, at 4/10. The review gives a dated illustration rather than a current quote: using its stated $2.59 per 2.5-ounce can, its example of four cans of Just Juicy Pork per day for a 10-pound cat came to $10.36 a day. The review estimated its dry-food example at about $3.30 per day. Those figures reflect the prices and feeding example in the article; they are not current prices or a feeding recommendation for every cat.

To assess your likely cost, check the current package directions and retailer price, then account for your cat’s individual calorie needs. A daily can count from an example is not a substitute for adjusting portions to the actual food label and your cat.

What does the review say about recalls and customer feedback?

Cats.com reports that Lotus had never been recalled as of April 2026. That is a time-bounded status reported by the review, not a guarantee about future recalls or a promise of safety.

The review describes customer feedback as mostly positive about ingredients and palatability, while also noting reports of inconsistent batches, cans with excess water or few shreds, partially filled cans, and high prices. These are customer anecdotes; the review does not establish how frequently such problems occur or measure a defect rate.

What to check before choosing a Lotus recipe

  • Format and texture: Decide whether your cat will eat a shredded stew, pâté, or dry food; the formats are not interchangeable in texture or composition.
  • Recipe ingredients: Check the current label for the named animal proteins and other ingredients. A single named protein in a recipe does not establish that it will suit a cat with a suspected allergy or medical condition.
  • Calories and portions: Use current package directions as a starting point and consider your cat’s individual calorie needs. Review estimates may not match typical nutrient values.
  • Total cost: Compare current retailer prices using the amount your cat would actually eat, rather than relying on the review’s historical example.
  • Availability and formulation: Confirm the recipe and package details at the retailer, since availability and product information can change.

Cats.com mentions Hound & Gatos and Weruva as lower-cost comparisons, but its review does not establish a direct current recipe-to-recipe nutrient comparison. A price comparison alone does not show that foods are nutritionally equivalent.
