The manufacturer’s own pages disagree on two points that matter for buying: which life stage the food is labeled for, and how many calories it contains. Check the current bag before you rely on either figure.
What the manufacturer says this food is
Lucy Pet’s product page for this formula, Salmon, Pumpkin & Quinoa Grain Free Cat Food, presents it as a grain-free dry diet. The shop listing, Gut Healthy Cat food Salmon, Pumpkin and Quinoa Formula, uses “gut healthy” in its name. That phrase is marketing language. Neither page shows a health benefit that the food delivers, and this review does not claim one.
Both pages are undated. Treat every number and claim below as the manufacturer’s statement as of the version you can see, and confirm it against the bag you buy.
Ingredients
The product page lists the following ingredients, in the order the manufacturer gives them:

Salmon is listed first, but the list also includes two meals (chicken and salmon) and several plant ingredients, including peas, chickpeas and pea starch. Reading the first ingredient alone tells you little about the overall protein or nutrient profile. The page lists no meat by-products by name, which bears on the company’s own question about by-products. Compare this list with the ingredient panel on your bag, since the page may not match the package you buy.
Guaranteed analysis and nutrient levels
The product page gives these guaranteed values:
- Crude protein: 32% minimum
- Crude fat: 15% minimum
- Crude fiber: 6% maximum
- Moisture: 12% maximum
- Taurine: 0.12% minimum
- Omega-3 fatty acids: 0.5% minimum
- Omega-6 fatty acids: 3.0% minimum
A separate Lucy Pet FAQ, which the company dates to an earlier version of its content, reports phosphorus at 0.29 g per ounce and magnesium at 0.17%, both on an as-fed basis. Phosphorus at 0.29 g per ounce works out to roughly 1.0 g per 100 g of food. These are company figures from that FAQ, not results from an independent laboratory.
Guaranteed analysis is stated on an as-fed basis, meaning the food as sold, and it includes moisture. Nutrient profiles set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) are expressed on a dry-matter basis, which removes water from the calculation. If the bag sits at its 12% moisture ceiling, 32% protein as-fed equals about 36.4% on a dry-matter basis (32 ÷ 0.88), and 15% fat equals about 17.0% (15 ÷ 0.88). A food with lower moisture would show a different dry-matter figure from the same as-fed number, so this conversion is only an estimate for the bag’s actual moisture.

Calories: the company’s two values conflict
The product page gives two calorie sets, and they do not match. Each set is a company figure with no test method stated on the page:
| Passage on the product page | kcal per kg | kcal per cup | Cup weight implied by the two values |
|---|---|---|---|
| First passage | 3,950 | 550 | about 139 g |
| Second passage | 3,690 | 490 | about 133 g |
The gap is about 7% in energy density, and the implied cup weights differ too. Do not quote a single calorie figure until you have read the kcal values printed on the bag. To work out your cat’s daily intake, use the bag’s kcal per kg and your own measuring method, then divide by the number of cups or grams you feed.
Is it “complete and balanced”? The label is the answer, not the web page
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states on its “Complete and Balanced” Pet Food guidance: “When you see a reference to either an AAFCO nutrient profile or a feeding trial using AAFCO procedures on a pet food label, you’re better assured that the “complete and balanced” claim is valid.”
Rank #3
- LIMITED INGREDIENT DIET: Carefully formulated for gut health, digestive health, and sensitive stomachs, which are key to natural immunity. Limited ingredient diet ideal for cats with food sensitivities. Wholesome, healthy whole grain formula.
- WHOLE GRAIN: Made with brown rice (sourced from the USA), a whole grain that retains the nutrient-dense bran and germ layer. This complex carbohydrate including starches and fibers provides sustained energy.
- SKIN & COAT: All-natural Chicken with absolutely no chicken meal by-products, sourced from the USA. An excellent source of protein for healthy muscles, skin, coat, and proper body function.
- ALL BREEDS & LIFE STAGES: Every kibble is designed to contain all the essential nutrients required for cats of every size, breed, and age
- WE GIVE BACK: Committed to helping animals by donating to the Lucy Pet Foundation, which has done over 28, 000 free spay & neuters in low income areas.
AAFCO’s consumer FAQ gives the next step: “The consumer should refer to the nutritional adequacy statement located on the pet food label to see if a product conforms to one of the AAFCO Dog or Cat Food Nutrient Profiles or to an AAFCO Dog or Cat Food Feeding Protocol.”
On this formula, the manufacturer’s pages do not match:
| Source | What it says about adequacy |
|---|---|
| Lucy Pet product page | Formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance |
| Lucy Pet shop page | Meets AAFCO profiles for all life stages |
| Bag adequacy statement | Not stated in this review; read it on the package you buy |
The bag’s nutritional adequacy statement decides the question. If it names all life stages, the food carries that claim. If it names only adult maintenance, the label does not support feeding it to kittens or to cats that are pregnant or nursing, and you should ask your veterinarian before using it for those cats.

Feeding directions and switching foods
The product page provides an adult feeding table based on body weight and advises adjusting portions to keep the cat in good body condition. For kittens, the company says food may be left out at all times. Those are company directions, not individualized veterinary advice, and the table itself is on the live page rather than reproduced here.
To switch foods, Lucy Pet’s starting point is to replace 20–25% of the cat’s current food with the new formula. Use that as the first step, then adjust the schedule with your veterinarian if your cat has a sensitive stomach or a medical condition.

Comparing two dry foods on the label alone takes a few steps. Do them in this order:

- Confirm each food’s adequacy statement and life-stage claim on the bag, not the website.
- Put both foods on the same moisture basis. Convert as-fed guarantees to dry-matter values, using each bag’s stated moisture, before comparing protein or fat. This matters most when comparing dry with canned food.
- Compare calorie density using the kcal figure printed on each bag.
- Work out the daily cost at your cat’s actual portion, not the bag’s price per pound.
- Compare protein and fat sources, and treat the cat’s own response and needs as the deciding factor.
Ranking foods by first ingredient alone gives a misleading picture of nutritional value.
Where it is made
Lucy Pet says its dry cat foods are made at the Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods facility in Irwindale, California, with ingredients sourced globally. Its “Where are your foods made?” FAQ also says the Kettle Creations canned stews are made in Thailand. That is a separate product line, so the Thailand statement does not describe this dry formula. These are company statements; the sources here do not include an independent audit of the facility.
Safety, quality claims and when to see a veterinarian
Lucy Pet’s Formulas for Life FAQ states that its foods are not intended to treat disease and recommends consulting a veterinarian about specific health questions. This review does not establish that this food is suitable for any individual cat with a medical condition, and a cat with kidney, urinary, digestive or other health issues should be evaluated by a vet before a diet change.
The company also describes internal testing and quality controls. That is the manufacturer’s account. Independent lab results, a lot-specific recall check, and palatability trials for this formula are not documented in the sources cited here, so this article makes no claim about them. Do not assume a food is recall-free or that cats prefer it without checking the current lot and the manufacturer’s contact details.
Checklist before you buy
- Read the nutritional adequacy statement on the bag and confirm the life stage it covers.
- Use the kcal per kg and kcal per cup printed on the bag, not the website values.
- Compare the guaranteed analysis on a dry-matter basis if you are weighing it against another food.
- Check the ingredient panel on the bag against the list above.
- Feed the company’s starting transition, then adjust portions to body condition.
- Confirm the lot against recall notices before opening the bag, and ask your veterinarian about any health concern before switching.
The Breeder’s Choice facility and global sourcing details appear on the company’s pages, and the Thailand statement applies to the Kettle Creations stews only.
