A kitten’s first year of medical care is built around one early appointment, then a series of planned conversations with your veterinary team about vaccines, parasites, nutrition, growth, and behavior. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that the first visit happen within the first week at home, or sooner if the kitten shows signs of illness. The guidance below explains what that visit is for, how to prepare, and what the rest of the year should cover. It does not replace an individual plan from your veterinarian, because vaccine timing and parasite products depend on the kitten.

Book the first visit within the first week at home

The AAHA first-year guide, “Kitten Health Care Guide: First-Year Vet Care & Vaccines” (published June 4, 2024), recommends a first veterinary visit within the first week after the kitten comes home. Do not wait for that week if the kitten seems sick. Contact your veterinary team sooner if you notice any of the following:

  • The kitten is not eating.
  • The kitten has diarrhea.
  • The kitten is sneezing.
  • The kitten is unusually quiet or less active than normal.

The first visit has several jobs. The veterinary team assesses general health, looks for congenital concerns, screens for parasites, and starts an individualized preventive-care plan covering vaccines, nutrition, behavior, and follow-up. Think of it as the baseline appointment that every later decision refers back to.

Prepare at home before the appointment

Acclimate the kitten to its carrier

AAHA recommends leaving the carrier out in the home for days or weeks before any trip, with soft bedding, treats, or toys inside. A carrier that appears only before stressful car rides or clinic visits quickly becomes a warning sign. A carrier that is already part of the household routine makes the appointment less distressing for both kitten and owner.

Pet First Aid Kit for Cats & Kittens – Compact Emergency Kit for Cat Owners, Home, Car, Travel & Outdoor Use
  • Complete Cat Emergency Kit (45 Pieces): Be prepared for everyday pet care or unexpected emergencies with 45 essential first aid items designed specifically for cats and small pets.
  • Compact, Portable & Travel-Ready: Lightweight and easy to store in your home, car, or travel bag—perfect for road trips, camping, or quick evacuations during natural disasters.
  • Designed for Cat Owners: Includes feline-friendly tools such as a reflective adjustable collar with bell, saline solution, styptic pencil, tick remover, and even a Cat Pop treat for comfort after care.
  • Everyday Pet Safety & Health: Ideal for handling tick removals, insect bites, minor cuts, or small injuries until you can reach your veterinarian—because quick care matters.

When choosing a carrier, look for functional features rather than appearance:

  • A top-opening or split design lets you lift the kitten in and out without pulling it through the front door, which many kittens resist.
  • Sturdy, fully enclosed walls and a secure latch keep the kitten from escaping during transport.
  • Enough interior space for the kitten to stand, turn, and lie down.
  • Removable or washable base padding, so accidents can be cleaned quickly.

Gather records and questions

  • Collect adoption paperwork, breeder or shelter records, and any prior veterinary records, including vaccine dates and deworming history.
  • Ask the clinic whether to bring a fresh stool sample. Some teams want one for parasite screening, and others prefer to collect it in the clinic.
  • Write down your questions, feeding details, litter habits, and any behavior concerns before you arrive.

Plan the core conversations with your veterinary team

The first visit usually opens several separate discussions. The table below shows what each one covers and what information your veterinarian will want from you. The right answer for each topic is individual, and no single schedule applies to every kitten.

Parasite prevention Choice of age-appropriate prevention and whether to run fecal testing Stool sample if requested, origin of the kitten, any known deworming
Nutrition and weight Growth rate, body condition, diet type, and feeding routine Current food brand and amount, feeding schedule, weight history
Oral health Examination of teeth and gums and gradual handling of the mouth Any drooling, bad breath, or reluctance to eat
Behavior and environment Litter habits, play, socialization, scratching, and safe enrichment Household members, children, other pets, daily routine
Diagnostics Tests the team recommends based on exam findings and history Any symptoms observed at home

Vaccination: a planning decision, not a fixed schedule

The AAHA/AAFP guidance, published in the “Vaccinations” section of the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines (February 18, 2021), separates core vaccines from non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are recommended broadly. Non-core vaccines are considered based on the individual cat’s risk. Patient age, lifestyle, origin, exposure, and environment all shape that decision.

The initial series and booster interval can vary with the kitten’s age at vaccination, the disease involved, the product label, and the vaccine type. Your veterinarian may give a schedule that differs from what a general article or a friend’s kitten received. Follow the schedule your veterinarian gives you, and keep your own copy of every vaccine record.

Parasite prevention: why indoor status is not enough

AAHA/AAFP guidance, summarized in the 2021 “Parasite Control” recommendations (published February 18, 2021), says that prophylactic broad-spectrum treatment is prudent for kittens and for newly adopted cats when their prior care is unknown. Parasite prevention is therefore a normal part of kitten care, including for kittens adopted from shelters or rescues with incomplete histories.

Several points help frame the discussion:

  • Exposure assessment matters. Ask your veterinarian to evaluate where the kitten lives, whether it goes outdoors, and what else it encounters.
  • Indoor living does not remove all parasite risk. Ask whether your kitten still needs prevention.
  • Fecal examination is recommended when your veterinary team advises it. It is not automatic for every kitten.
  • Product selection belongs to your veterinarian. Only use products the veterinary team confirms are suitable for your kitten’s age and weight, and do not transfer a product from another animal.

Nutrition, growth, and body condition

Nutrition and weight management are core topics in the first year. The AAHA/AAFP life-stage summary (published February 18, 2021) defines kittens as a distinct life stage and covers nutrition as one of its care domains. This article does not name a best food, a feeding quantity, or a universal feeding schedule. Those details depend on the kitten’s growth, body condition, and health history.

  • Litter habits: Provide an accessible, appropriately sized litter box and clean it regularly. Report straining, frequent trips, blood, or accidents outside the box to your veterinary team.
  • Safe resources: Provide scratching posts, climbing surfaces, and hiding spots. Remove toxic plants, loose cords, and small objects a kitten could swallow.
  • Play and socialization: Use interactive play with wand toys and fetch-style games to channel energy. Avoid rough play with hands and feet, which can teach biting and scratching habits.
  • Positive reinforcement: Reward desired behavior with treats or praise, and redirect unwanted behavior to an appropriate outlet.

Zoonotic risk and household safety

The first-year guidance includes zoonoses and human safety as part of wellness care. Ask your veterinary team which precautions apply to your household. Wash hands after handling the kitten, litter, or stool, and take extra care with young children, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Your veterinary team can advise on the specific risks in your area.

Wellness follow-ups through the first year

Shots are only one part of the first year. Plan follow-up visits with your veterinary team to review vaccine progress, parasite prevention, growth, oral health, behavior, and the spay or neuter timing discussed in the AAHA first-year guide. Ask at each appointment what the next visit should cover, and write the date down before you leave.

When to contact the veterinary team sooner

Do not wait for a scheduled visit if your kitten shows any of the following:

  • Refusing food or drinking much less than usual
  • Diarrhea, especially if it persists or contains blood
  • Sneezing or nasal discharge
  • Unusual quietness, lethargy, or hiding more than normal

When in doubt, call. Describe what you have seen, when it started, and whether anything has changed in the kitten’s routine.
