The little monkey appeared to drag, hug, and retreat to the toy after difficult encounters with other macaques, prompting millions of viewers to wonder who he was and why a zoo had given him a stuffed animal.
Punch’s story is touching, but several popular descriptions need correcting. His mother did not reportedly die: she abandoned or rejected him shortly after birth. And while some videos were labeled “bullying,” the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden says the troop’s interactions were largely part of macaque hierarchy and infant protection, not evidence that Punch was under constant attack.
Who is Punch?
Punch is a male Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo. He was born on July 26, 2025.
Shortly after his birth, Punch’s mother reportedly stopped caring for him, possibly because she was exhausted. “Orphaned monkey” became the common shorthand online, but there is no verified report that his mother died. The more accurate description is that Punch was abandoned or rejected by his mother and subsequently hand-reared by zoo staff.

That distinction matters because a hand-reared infant still needs opportunities to develop normal relationships with members of its own species. The zoo’s goal was not to make Punch a permanent human companion. It was to keep him alive while gradually helping him join the macaque troop.
Why did the zoo give him an IKEA orangutan?
Keepers provided Punch with a stuffed orangutan and towels for practical animal-care reasons. Infant macaques normally cling to their mothers for transport, warmth, security, and physical contact. A soft object can encourage some of that clinging behavior while giving an infant something to hold when a human caregiver is not present.
The toy also helped reduce Punch’s dependence on people. Rather than constantly carrying or comforting him, keepers could offer an object that provided contact and reassurance without turning human attention into his only source of security.
For Punch, the plush eventually became a comfort object. When another macaque scolded him or pushed him away, he often returned to the orangutan, hugged it, and later went back to interacting with the troop. That pattern is different from treating the toy as a substitute pet or a novelty accessory. It was part of a managed hand-rearing and reintegration plan.
Which IKEA toy is it?
The plush seen with Punch is the larger IKEA DJUNGELSKOG soft toy, orangutan. In the United States, its article number is 104.028.41.
| Product | Article number | Size | U.S. price when checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| DJUNGELSKOG soft toy, orangutan | 104.028.41 | 14¼ inches high | $19.99 |
| DJUNGELSKOG soft toy, mini orangutan | 506.061.05 | 7¾ inches | $6.99 |
The smaller mini orangutan is not the toy shown in the viral footage. IKEA lists the larger model as machine washable and made with recycled polyester, although stock and pricing vary by country and location.
Interest surged after Punch’s videos circulated. IKEA told The Washington Post that the larger orangutan sold out in Japan, the United States, and South Korea during the initial viral wave, and that the company was working to restock it.

Was Punch being bullied?
Some footage showed Punch being dragged, chased, or reprimanded by other macaques. Those scenes were upsetting to watch, but the zoo has cautioned against interpreting every macaque interaction through a human definition of bullying.
In a February 20 statement, the zoo said an adult macaque dragged Punch after he approached another infant. The adult appeared to be protecting its baby. The zoo reported that Punch was scolded repeatedly, but said no monkey had displayed aggression that threatened his survival.
A March 10 clarification added that Japanese macaques live in a strict social hierarchy. Discipline toward lower-ranking animals is a normal part of troop life, even though it can look harsh to human observers. The zoo also said that some higher-ranking macaques showing aggression more frequently were temporarily removed from the troop on March 8, 2026.
This does not mean every interaction was harmless or that keepers ignored Punch’s welfare. It means the available evidence does not support claims that the troop was continuously abusing him or trying to kill him. Punch reportedly spent most of the day peacefully within the group and used the plush as a retreat after stressful moments.
How did Punch join the macaque troop?
Reintegration happened gradually rather than through one sudden release.
- Early hand-rearing: Zoo staff cared for Punch after his mother rejected him.
- Fence-line contact: From about three months old, he interacted with other macaques through fences.
- Supervised entry: After four months, he entered the enclosure with keepers.
- Gentle social contact: He spent time with a young female macaque considered gentle.
- Monkey Mountain: Punch began spending time in the troop’s Monkey Mountain enclosure on January 19, 2026.
The plush remained available during this process. It gave Punch somewhere familiar to return to while he learned how to approach, avoid, climb around, and communicate with other macaques.
The zoo also introduced visitor-management measures after crowds grew around the exhibit. Visitors were asked to remain quiet, and viewing was limited to 10 minutes to reduce pressure on the animals.

What happened to Punch and the toy?
The toy was never meant to be Punch’s permanent companion. As he became more comfortable with other macaques, he used it less. In early March, reports described him sitting with adult monkeys, climbing on another monkey, and being groomed or hugged. The zoo regarded his growing independence from the plush as a positive sign.
By Punch’s first birthday on July 26, 2026, he had friends, mingled and played with the troop, and was no longer carrying the toy. AP News reported that he had received approximately 2,500 birthday cards and messages from Japan and other countries.

What pet owners should—and should not—take from the story
Punch’s plush is easy to interpret as a heartwarming example of an animal choosing a stuffed friend. The more important lesson is about appropriate enrichment and species-specific care. The toy was selected and used by professional keepers as one part of a carefully supervised macaque-rearing program. It did not replace social contact with other macaques, veterinary oversight, or a structured reintegration plan.
A stuffed toy can be suitable enrichment for some domestic pets, but not every animal should receive one. Dogs may tear open plush toys and swallow stuffing or squeakers. Cats can ingest loose threads, ribbons, or attached plastic parts. Rabbits and other animals may chew fabric and develop an intestinal blockage.
If you offer a plush toy to a pet:
- Choose a size that cannot be swallowed.
- Remove loose eyes, ribbons, plastic pieces, and damaged seams.
- Supervise the first several play sessions.
- Take the toy away when stuffing, fabric, or squeakers become accessible.
- Wash it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and replace it when it can no longer be safely repaired.
For a hand-reared wild animal, however, comfort enrichment should never be treated as a replacement for appropriate contact with its own species. Punch’s progress came from moving toward the troop, not from remaining attached to the IKEA toy forever.

Be careful with viral Punch content
The zoo has warned that inaccurate information, invented keeper quotations, and AI-generated images and videos were circulating online. It has also declined to identify most individual macaques because public hostility toward them could interfere with their care.

That warning is especially relevant when a short clip appears to show an animal being harmed. A video may omit what happened immediately before or afterward, and a caption may assign human motives that animal-care staff do not support. The most reliable updates are the zoo’s statements and reporting that distinguishes confirmed observations from online speculation.

Keepers gave him the IKEA DJUNGELSKOG orangutan to encourage clinging, provide comfort, and help limit dependence on human caregivers while he was gradually introduced to his troop. The most encouraging part of the story is that Punch eventually needed the plush less and began building relationships with other macaques.
