A colugo is neither a lemur nor a flying animal: it is a gliding mammal with its own place in the mammal order Dermoptera. Its nickname comes from its lemur-like face and ability to travel between trees, while a broad skin membrane called a patagium makes those glides possible.
What is a colugo?
Colugos are tree-dwelling mammals in the order Dermoptera. The Natural History Museum describes them as the closest living relatives of primates, the group that includes lemurs, monkeys, apes and humans. That means colugos and primates share an evolutionary ancestor; it does not make a colugo a lemur or an ancestor of living lemurs.
“Flying lemur” is a common name, not a description of its taxonomy or how it moves. The name reflects the animal’s appearance and its ability to glide through the forest canopy. Colugos cannot produce powered flight.
Why can’t a colugo fly?
A colugo glides rather than flies. Powered flight involves generating lift continuously; a glide is a controlled descent through the air. The Natural History Museum reports recorded colugo glides of up to 150 metres. That is an upper recorded distance, not a typical glide or a measure of how far every colugo travels.

The patagium: a membrane from neck to tail
The patagium is an extensive skin membrane running from the neck and sides of the body to the fingers, legs and tail. When a colugo stretches its limbs, the membrane opens into a large gliding surface. It helps the animal move between trees without having to descend to the ground. Singapore’s National Parks Board likens the membrane to a parachute; “glide” remains the more precise term for the movement.
Where do colugos live?
Two living species are conventionally recognized in the Natural History Museum’s overview. Their ranges differ, although the boundaries of Sunda colugo taxonomy remain unsettled.

| Species | Range in the cited overview | Taxonomic note |
|---|---|---|
| Philippine colugo (Cynocephalus volans) | Southern Philippine islands | Recognized as a living species in the Natural History Museum overview. |
| Sunda colugo (Galeopterus variegatus) | Parts of Southeast Asia; NParks lists Myanmar, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and Java. | Some geographically separated lineages may warrant distinct species recognition; the boundary is not settled. |
The Smithsonian’s 2012 taxonomy review documents disagreement over whether the Sunda animal belongs in Galeopterus or Cynocephalus, and discusses research suggesting mainland Southeast Asian, Javan and Bornean forms may merit separate recognition. Treat the two-species count as a conventional summary, not a final answer to every taxonomic question.
What do colugos do in the trees?
Sunda colugos are arboreal, solitary and mainly nocturnal. Singapore’s National Parks Board says they rest by day clinging to tree trunks or hanging from horizontal branches, then feed at night. Its species account lists leaves, leaf shoots and flower buds; its newer BiodiversitySG explainer also mentions flowers and fruit. Animal Diversity Web describes a broader diet of soft plant material, including buds, young leaves, nectar and sap. Foods documented in these accounts should not be assumed to be equally important in every population.

How colugo mothers carry their young
Animal Diversity Web’s Sunda colugo account says females usually give birth to one young after about 60 days of gestation; twins are rare. The young is underdeveloped at birth and nurses for around six months. It may cling to its mother’s underside as she glides, or be carried inside her folded patagium. NParks also notes that mothers carry their young, sometimes wrapped in the membrane.

Are colugos endangered?
Colugos depend on forest canopy habitat, and forest loss and disturbance are concerns. The Natural History Museum identifies habitat loss as the largest threat in its account and also mentions hunting in some areas. Animal Diversity Web reports declines in Sunda colugo numbers associated with logging and forest conversion.
Animal Diversity Web also repeats a “Least Concern” assessment for the Sunda colugo, but that secondary account does not establish a current global assessment. A broad geographic range or a status label alone cannot show whether a particular local population is secure. The sources cited here do not provide a current global population estimate.
