The kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus) is a flightless, endangered bird found only on New Caledonia’s main island. Its standout feature is a thin covering of skin over its nostrils, described as unique by the official species profile from Province Sud. The kagu is also the sole living member of its bird family, Rhynochetidae.
What is the kagu?
The kagu is a forest-dwelling bird about 55 cm long. It lives on the ground in dense, humid forest and cannot fly. Its gray-blue plumage, bright orange-red bill and legs, and shaggy crest make it distinctive; black-and-white barring on its wings becomes visible when it opens them. The kagu is endemic to New Caledonia, meaning it occurs naturally nowhere else. The IUCN account describes its size and plumage, while Province Sud identifies it as the last living representative of its family.
What is unique about the kagu’s nose?
A thin structure of skin covers the kagu’s nostrils. Province Sud’s official species profile describes this covering as unique. That is the evidence-backed answer to what makes the bird’s nose unusual; the kagu’s crest is striking, but it should not be presented as a feature found in no other bird.
Why can’t the kagu fly?
The kagu is flightless and adapted to life on the forest floor, where it walks and searches for food rather than flying between habitats. Its wings are still visually notable: when spread, they reveal black-and-white barring. The available species accounts establish that the kagu cannot fly, but do not give a specific anatomical or evolutionary explanation for why.

Where does the kagu live, and how does it nest?
Kagus inhabit dense, humid forest on New Caledonia’s main island. They forage on the ground and also nest there. According to the museum account, a female lays one egg per year in a ground nest, and both parents take turns incubating it for about a month.
How many kagus remain, and what threatens them?
Province Sud’s 2023 guide estimates about 1,500 kagus remaining in New Caledonia, including just under 1,000 in Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue. These are estimates for the island and named park, not a count of a worldwide population beyond the species’ New Caledonian range. The bird is classified as endangered.

Introduced dogs, cats, rats and pigs are documented threats, alongside habitat degradation. Because kagus nest and forage on the ground, introduced animals and damage to forest habitat put pressure on the places where they live and reproduce.
