The giraffe is the tallest living land animal. Its height depends on where it is measured: published figures range from 5.3 metres for males and 4.3 metres for females to reported male maxima of 5.5 metres, while the historical record giraffe George reached 5.8 metres.
There is no verified, consistently measured ranking of eight living land animals in the sources available for this article. The examples below explain what is known about giraffes, elephants and ostriches, and why their reported heights should not be treated as a precise countdown.
How do scientists measure an animal’s height?
“Height” can refer to different measurements. Giraffe figures may be measured to the top of the head, while elephant figures are often measured at the shoulder. These measurements are not directly comparable, so a list combining them cannot establish a reliable rank order.
Sex and the kind of figure reported matter, too: a typical range, an average and an exceptional individual’s record are different things. The source pages cited below do not state publication years, so none are assigned here.

Tall land animals: what the sources establish
Giraffe
Giraffa camelopardalis
The giraffe is the tallest living land animal. Tokyo Zoological Park Society’s Tama Zoo reports a height to the top of the head of 5.3 metres for males and 4.3 metres for females. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance reports maxima of 18 feet (5.5 metres) for males and 14 feet (4.3 metres) for females. These are figures from different sources, not a single standardized dataset.
Guinness World Records gives a typical adult male range of 4.6–5.5 metres. Its historical record account reports that George, a Masai giraffe, measured 5.8 metres. That exceptional individual record should not be confused with a typical species height.
Giraffes browse on leaves high above the ground. Their height is the reason they are the clear answer to the question of which living land animal is tallest.
Rank #2
Elephants
Elephants are among the tallest and largest living land animals, but the available figures refer to different species and measurements. Naturhistorisches Museum Wien gives an average height of 3.2 metres for male African savanna elephants. Smithsonian’s National Zoo gives a typical shoulder-height range of 6–12 feet (1.8–3.8 metres) for Asian elephants.

Common ostrich
Struthio camelus
The common ostrich is the world’s tallest bird, according to Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Toledo Zoo & Aquarium says ostriches can reach up to 9 feet tall. This makes the ostrich a notable tall land animal, but the available evidence does not establish its precise rank against animals measured at the shoulder.
Height comparison at a glance
| Animal | Reported figure | Measurement or qualification | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giraffe | 5.3 m males; 4.3 m females | Height to top of head | Tokyo Zoological Park Society / Tama Zoo |
| Giraffe | Up to 18 ft (5.5 m) males; 14 ft (4.3 m) females | Published maxima; source measurement protocol not specified in the dossier | San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance |
| Giraffe | 4.6–5.5 m typical adult male range; 5.8 m for George | Typical range and separate historical individual record | Guinness World Records |
| African savanna elephant | 3.2 m average for males | Average height; measurement point not specified in the dossier | Naturhistorisches Museum Wien |
| Asian elephant | 6–12 ft (1.8–3.8 m) | Typical shoulder-height range | Smithsonian’s National Zoo |
| Common ostrich | Up to 9 ft | Height; measurement protocol not specified in the dossier | Toledo Zoo & Aquarium |
The values come from sources that use different measurement points or do not specify a protocol in the available research. They are useful reference points, not a like-for-like ranking.
So which animal is truly the tallest?
The giraffe is the tallest living land animal. Tama Zoo, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle all identify it as the tallest. The exact published figures vary by source and sex, and an exceptional record should not be presented as an ordinary height.
Elephants and ostriches are useful comparisons, but the available evidence does not support a precise ranking of eight species. A dependable countdown would require comparable measurements collected using the same method.

No. The giraffe is the tallest living land animal. Elephant figures often describe shoulder height, while giraffe figures may be measured to the top of the head, so the numbers should not be compared without noting the measurement point.
