The animal behind the headline is Waldo, an African grey parrot associated with Hatebeak, a Baltimore-based death-metal studio project. He was reported as 21 in 2015—not verified as 34 today. The band’s “singer” role is real in the project’s playful premise, but the recordings were made by capturing and editing Waldo’s vocalizations rather than asking him to perform vocals on cue.
Who is Waldo?
Waldo is an African grey parrot whose sounds became the centerpiece of Hatebeak, a project formed by human musicians. In 2015, VICE described the group as a Baltimore-based studio project and reported that Waldo was 21. The San Francisco Chronicle had described him as 15 in 2004. Those dated reports are broadly consistent with the headline’s age framing, but they do not establish his exact birth date, current age, or current status.
Is Waldo really Hatebeak’s singer?
Yes, in the sense that his vocalizations are used as the project’s featured voice. It is not a conventional lead singer delivering lyrics or singing on demand: drummer Blake Harrison told VICE that Waldo’s sounds were recorded separately and assembled into the music afterward.
How did the band make the recordings?
Harrison said he and guitarist Mark Sloan developed the idea while between bands. They recorded Waldo in a separate room, then cut up and rearranged his spontaneous vocalizations, applied distortion and other effects, and layered the results over instrumental tracks written by the human musicians. VICE reported that they sometimes encouraged Waldo with dehydrated banana chips.

Harrison described the concept with a joke: “How stupid would it be if we had a parrot for a singer?” He also said the project was worthwhile while the musicians continued to enjoy it: “As long as we keep having fun and keep getting a kick out of it, we’re in good shape.” Both quotes are Harrison’s, not Waldo’s.
Why is the headline’s age uncertain?
The age reports are snapshots from different years, not a verified current-age record:

The reports broadly point to a birth around 1989–1990, but neither source verifies an exact birth date. The figure “34” therefore should not be treated as a confirmed present-day age.
Did Waldo perform live?
The reporting describes Hatebeak as a studio project. Harrison told VICE that a live performance with Waldo would be impractical: the parrot vocalized when comfortable rather than on cue, and concert-level sound would be unfair to an animal. The story does not establish that Waldo toured or gave live performances.

Number of the Beak is the Hatebeak release VICE covered in 2015. That report confirms the release at the time; it does not establish whether the album is currently available to buy or stream.

No. Hatebeak features Waldo’s parrot vocalizations. Caninus was a separate animal-fronted extreme-music concept whose lead vocalists were reported as two dogs. A 2013 article from Flayrah mentions both, but they are distinct projects.
