A dog who struggled to walk went on to explore much of the United States with the family who adopted him. In reporting published in May 2016, Mel’s story was one of adoption, a custom-fitted wheelchair and the bond he shared with photographer Tom Dilworth. The reports do not establish what happened to Mel after 2016.

How Mel found his family

Tom and Tamara Dilworth adopted Mel from Yonkers Animal Shelter. They had gone there to see another dog, but Tom noticed Mel and the family chose to take him home. The 2016 reports described Mel as an eight-year-old at that time; that is a historical age, not a current one.

Why Mel got a wheelchair

After the adoption, the Dilworths noticed that Mel had difficulty walking and keeping his balance. ABC News described the cause as a neurological disease affecting his balance, but did not name a specific diagnosis. No more precise medical explanation is established by the reporting.

In 2012, the family took Mel to Eddie’s Wheels for Pets for a custom wheelchair. When he first tried it, Tom Dilworth told ABC News, “He was off and running instantly.”

Traveling with Tom Dilworth

With the wheelchair, Mel could join the family on trips around the country. ABC News reported in May 2016 that he had visited Colorado, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Florida. Tom, a professional photographer, documented their travels. He told ABC News, “He loves getting out and walking around. And hiking.” Those are Dilworth’s comments from the 2016 interview, not a current update.

Choosing mobility support for a dog

Mel’s story is not proof that one wheelchair will suit every dog. A mobility device needs to match the individual animal’s condition and body, as well as the terrain and activities involved. Eddie’s Wheels for Pets currently describes custom rear-, front- and four-wheel wheelchairs and offers a measuring guide on its official website. Ask a veterinarian or qualified provider about a dog’s needs and fit rather than assuming a mass-market cart is appropriate.
