Mercury Poisoning in Cats: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Mercury poisoning in cats depends on the form of mercury, the route, and the timing. Learn the warning signs, how veterinarians test for it, and what to do right away.

A suspected mercury exposure in a cat is an emergency that needs a veterinarian, even when the cat seems only mildly unwell. Owners cannot confirm mercury poisoning at home, and the signs overlap with many other illnesses. What matters most is which form of mercury was involved, how the cat was exposed, and how long the exposure lasted. Those details shape the tests, the treatment, and the outlook.

Why the form of mercury matters

Mercury is not one poison. Elemental mercury, inorganic mercury salts, and organic mercury such as methylmercury differ in how they enter the body, where they go, and which organs they damage. Veterinary toxicology references treat them as separate problems, so a cat’s signs and tests should be read against the specific form involved.

Form Typical sources Main route of concern Usual pattern of illness Sample used for testing
Elemental mercury Older thermometers, fluorescent bulbs Inhaled vapor; skin contact Breathing problems and lung injury Not stated in the cited veterinary references
Inorganic mercury salts Some batteries, older latex paints Ingestion Corrosive irritation of the mouth, throat, and stomach; kidney injury Urine (urinary mercury is particularly useful)
Organic mercury (methylmercury) Accumulates in aquatic food chains, including some fish-based diets Ingestion, usually over time Delayed nervous-system signs Soft tissues such as liver, kidney, or brain

Sources: Merck Veterinary Manual, “Mercury Toxicosis in Animals” and Merck Veterinary Manual, “Mercury Poisoning”.

How cats are exposed

Mercury exposure can occur by ingestion, inhalation, or contact with the skin. The route and the form together determine what a cat is likely to show.

Household and environmental sources

Elemental mercury is the form most associated with broken thermometers and fluorescent bulbs, where vapor and spilled droplets are the concern. Inorganic salts have been linked to some batteries and to older latex paints, where a cat may chew, lick, or ingest the material. Organic mercury builds up in aquatic food chains, so it is not a household spill risk in the same way.

Fish-based diets

Merck describes commercial fish-based dietary products as a potential source of chronic toxicosis in cats. Methylmercury exposure from food is a long-term process rather than a single event. The risk cannot be judged from how a fish or a food looks, and this article does not identify any brand as contaminated. If you are worried about a specific food, keep the packaging, stop feeding it, and tell your veterinarian.

Veterinary reference exposure figures

Veterinary toxicology references give figures for methylmercury that are useful to clinicians but are not practical cut-offs for owners. They are listed here so you can see how veterinarians frame the problem:

  • Daily dietary methylmercury below 0.3 ppm is considered subtoxic in cats (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2026, professional review).
  • A cumulative dose of 20 mg/kg body weight has been associated with chronic toxic lesions (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2026, professional review).
  • Acute exposure above 1 mg/kg has been associated with acute toxicity (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2026, professional review).

These numbers come from a professional reference and describe associations in the literature cited by that source. They cannot tell you whether a particular cat or diet is safe, and they should not be used to decide whether to seek care.

Symptoms to watch for

Signs depend on the chemical form, the amount, the route, and how long the exposure lasted. None of them is diagnostic on its own. Gastrointestinal illness, kidney disease, infections, and other toxins can look very similar.

Delayed nervous-system signs (organic mercury)

Organic mercury compounds such as methylmercury can take time to cause signs. The features described in veterinary references include:

  • Blindness
  • Abnormal or excited behavior
  • Lack of coordination, including hindleg incoordination and rigidity
  • Tremors
  • Seizures

Neurologic signs may be irreversible, so a cat showing these changes needs urgent assessment even if the exposure happened weeks earlier.

Gastrointestinal and kidney signs (inorganic mercury)

Inorganic mercury is corrosive and more often causes illness of the digestive tract and kidneys. Watch for appetite loss, inflammation of the mouth or throat, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dehydration. Kidney injury can follow. Severe acute exposure can be life-threatening.

Breathing problems (elemental mercury vapor)

Inhaled elemental mercury vapor can injure the lungs and cause respiratory distress. A cat that is breathing with effort after a broken thermometer or bulb needs to be moved to fresh air and taken to a veterinarian immediately.

How veterinarians diagnose mercury poisoning

Diagnosis combines the exposure history, a clinical examination, and laboratory tests. Merck recommends a minimum database that includes:

  • Urinalysis, to look for kidney injury
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, to assess kidney function
  • Hemoglobin and hematocrit, to look for anemia

Beyond that, testing depends on the suspected form. Urinary mercury is particularly useful for inorganic exposure. Organic mercury is better assessed in soft tissues such as liver, kidney, or brain. Testing the suspected food or environmental material can help identify the source. Home test kits cannot diagnose or rule out poisoning in a cat.

Treatment and outlook

Treatment aims to stop further exposure, limit absorption, support the cat’s organs, and consider specific therapies when they are appropriate. Merck describes activated charcoal as a possible measure after acute intoxication and chelation as an option in selected cases. Both are veterinary decisions. The choice depends on the mercury form and on how much time has passed since exposure.

Treatment may not reverse kidney or nervous-system damage that has already occurred. For this reason, the prognosis for complete recovery can be poor, and early assessment gives the best chance to limit injury. (Merck Veterinary Manual, “Principles of Toxicosis Treatment in Animals,” last updated June 2024, describes these general principles: Principles of Toxicosis Treatment in Animals.)

What to do if you suspect exposure

  1. Call your veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary clinic now. Cornell Feline Health Center advises emergency veterinary care for suspected poisoning (Cornell Feline Health Center, “Poisons”).
  2. Tell the clinic what you think the cat was exposed to, when it happened, the approximate amount, and how it was exposed (swallowed, inhaled, or touched).
  3. Bring the product label, packaging, or a safe sample of the suspected material. If you are not sure whether a material is safe to handle, ask the clinic how to transport it.
  4. If the cat is breathing with difficulty, has seized, or is collapsed, keep it in a quiet, ventilated space and go to the clinic without delay.
  5. Do not induce vomiting, and do not give activated charcoal, chelators, or other medications unless a veterinarian directs you. General veterinary toxicology guidance notes that decontamination can be contraindicated when an animal is neurologically unstable or when the substance is corrosive, among other cases.

If the exposure is only suspected and the cat has no signs, a call to your veterinarian is still the right first step, because early testing and a documented history are what allow a clinician to choose safely.

Limits of what is known

Many cases of suspected mercury poisoning in cats are reported from a single exposure event or a single diet, and the cited references describe general patterns rather than large case series. That means a clinician will weigh the history, the signs, and the test results together rather than relying on any one feature.
